BUTANCHU

부탄츄 Butanchu The sign spells the name 豚人, literally 'pig person' — the house serves pork-bone (tonkotsu) ramen.

Compiled from 19 blog posts read in fullSources →

Butanchu's Hongdae main branch is a tonkotsu ramen shop on the ground floor of 75 Wausan-ro 35-gil, Mapo-gu. You pick one of four ramen (toko tonkotsu, tokoshio, shoyu, shio), one of three noodles (thin hosomen, wavy chijiremen, thick 'dragon' noodles), and how much sauce, garlic, bean sprouts and scallion you want. Every 2026 post put the ramen at 10,000 won; adding a side such as gyoza, karaage or fried rice as a set costs 3,500 won more, 13,500 won in all. Seating is mostly counter stools with a few tables. We read 30 posts dated 13 February to 25 October 2026. We set aside 6 that were about the Sinchon or Seolleung branches or only used the name for directions; of the remaining 24, 20 were written after an actual visit.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect a queue. Nine posts waited; one walked straight in. The waits recorded were 5, 10, 15, 15–20 and about 20 minutes. You write your name and party size on a board by the door and are called in turn; one post warned that the whole party must be present to be seated, and there is no remote waitlist app. One post said staff come out and take orders while you wait.
  2. Food arrives fast once you sit: two posts said so, one timing it at about five minutes from order to a bowl at full boil. Both credited this for the quick turnover in the queue.
  3. Salt is the most repeated remark: nine posts found it salty. Two had chosen the 'salty' sauce level, but others ordered regular and still found the shio ramen strong, or found the fried rice salty on top of the ramen. Several suggested ordering 'light' sauce or extra bean sprouts.
  4. Seating is mostly counter. Eight posts described it: mainly counter seats on drum stools with some bar tables further in, a few two- and four-person tables, and solo seats by the entrance. Three posts called the room narrow. Many mentioned solo diners.

  1. No post called it expensive; seven said the price was easy. In 2026 the ramen was 10,000 won, a set add-on 3,500, toppings like menma or nori 500, extra noodles 1,000. Ramen plus set is 13,500 won; a family of three paid 34,500 won for three ramen and a gyoza. One post noted slightly higher late-night prices.
  2. The walls carry many celebrity autographs; three posts saw them, one naming singer Kim Jae-joong, rapper Dindin, actor Cho Jin-woong and Bbaek-ga, another an esports player's signature.
  3. Repeat visits are common: five posts were return trips, including one after nine years and one the following week.
  4. Seven posts said who they came with: three with a partner, two with family, one alone, one with a friend. Both family visits included children; one advised that with counter seating it suits kids of upper-primary age and older.
  5. It is close to the station: two posts came by subway from Hongik University Station and walked over. The '114 m from exit 7' figure in other posts is copied listing data.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 19 posts read)

Only one post described the shop as being on the ground floor from experience; the rest just repeat the address.

No one mentioned a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. That means we don't know, not that there is no barrier.

No post described the toilet first-hand. One post's copied info block lists an indoor unisex toilet; we did not count it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 23 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-09-142 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The price went up once: a visit on 28 December 2025 recorded the ramen at 9,500 won; every 2026 post says 10,000 won.
  • Opening hours changed in March 2026. Posts from February and early March gave an 11:30 opening; from 30 March posts say 9 am, and a September post labels the morning opening 'temporary'. Seven posts agree on Sun–Thu 09:00–22:00 (last order 21:30) and Fri–Sat 09:00–03:00 (break 21:30–22:00, last order 02:30), but most of them copied the listing or the door sign. Friday and Saturday nights carry separate limited ramen.
  • No post said whether reservations are taken. Five posts gave the phone number 02-3144-3304; the queue works by writing your name on a board on site.
  • Butanchu also has Sinchon, Seolleung and Konkuk branches with different specials and noodle-refill rules (one post noted Konkuk gives three free refills); we excluded the other branches' posts. Limited ramen rotate by period, so any named special may be gone.
