샘밭막국수 Chuncheon-style buckwheat noodles, third generation of the family, in a basement by the Seocho courthouse
Korean · Seocho-gu, Seocho-dong
Data as of · Published ·
Sambat Makguksu's Seocho branch is a Chuncheon-style buckwheat-noodle house a few minutes' walk from exit 4 at Seoul National University of Education station, on the basement level of the G5 Central Plaza. Several writers say the family is in its third generation at the Chuncheon original and that there are a handful of branches. This one used to be an old shop in a nearby lane before it moved into the current building. A bowl of makguksu is the centre of things, with sliced pork, bossam and griddled pancakes around it, and the Sambat set — a little of everything — is what most people order. It opens every day with no closing day and no afternoon break, which three writers say lets them come in after the lunch rush. Four note how many older customers there are, with the courthouse and the Acrovista towers nearby. The posts we read run from November 2025 to September 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- The sauce looks fierce and then turns out not to be — that refrain runs through almost every post here. Three writers call it the Pyongyang-naengmyeon of makguksu; others say there is no MSG edge, that the seasoning is quiet. Writers used to bolder food found it plain, but even they say vinegar, mustard and a second helping of the sauce pulled it their way. Three posts note that the kitchen brings more sauce if you ask.
- There is no separate cold-broth version and no separate mixed version. The noodles come dressed with sauce and seaweed, and a kettle of chilled dongchimi brine comes beside them, so you eat it mixed and then pour the brine in partway through. Several writers advise waiting rather than pouring at once, and the phrase that keeps coming back is two dishes out of one bowl. A cup of warm buckwheat cooking water arrives first — one writer warns there are two kettles on the table and it is easy to mix them up.
- Prices went up once in the two years we read, and the writers noticed. A bowl was ₩12,000 through May 2026 and ₩13,000 from June; the Sambat set went from ₩19,000 to ₩21,000. Several posts push back — it went up again, ₩13,000 for makguksu still doesn't sit right, this isn't value for money. One writer photographed the 2025 and 2026 price boards side by side. Two others allow that for this part of Seocho the figures aren't outlandish.
- The shop is one floor underground, and an unusual number of posts describe getting down to it. People circle the building before spotting the basement sign, or head inside when the way in is the outdoor stair on the right. One writer took the lift down; three took the stairs. Once below, you turn left and the sign is at the end of the corridor — everyone agrees it is easy from there.
- The queue only forms in the middle of a weekday lunch. One writer arrived just after noon on a weekday, took a ticket behind five parties and sat for about ten minutes. Everyone who came slightly off the peak walked straight in, and the writers who came for dinner describe a quiet room. Three say the tables turn over quickly. One suggests that a larger group should arrive early, since the office crowd nearby fills the place.
- These are largely posts by people coming back. One writer is on a third visit; another comes round regularly and no longer looks at the menu; another used to live nearby and dropped in often; one links to two of his own earlier visits. There is a counter-current: one writer, finding the restraint too plain for him, doubts he would come back on purpose, and another says his appetite for a return trip fell after the kitchen's radish kimchi and the spacing of the tables got worse.

What people order
The most ordered dish is makguksu (막국수) — 18 of 24 posts.
The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place
Parking
3 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Parking is the building's underground garage, and an hour is free if you give your plate number at the till. Only a handful of writers actually parked: one went a little over the hour and paid ₩2,000 more, another found the bays very tight. One says that compared with the old shop in the lane, parking got far easier after the move into this building. The tidy line about free parking with a meal that appears in many of the other posts is lifted straight from the Naver Place listing and we did not count it as an observation — one of those writers names the listing as the source.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Not one post says whether you can get in with a wheelchair. The shop is a floor underground, and nobody writes about a threshold, a ramp, or whether the toilet can be used from a chair. One writer took a lift down, so we know there is one, but we could not establish whether it reaches the shop's own door. Everyone else describes stairs.
No one mentioned: Second floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 26 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- The toilet is the building's, not the shop's. One writer puts it just to the left as you come out; another says there are separate men's and women's ones right by the restaurant. Nobody describes a toilet inside the shop, and since the second writer may be copying the Naver listing we have not treated the separate-toilets claim as confirmed.
- No post here declares a sponsorship. Seven go the other way and post the receipt to prove they paid; one says the meal was someone else's treat. The remaining seventeen simply say nothing about money — which means they did not write it down, not that they paid. One writer describes the kitchen cancelling a missed order and sending over instant coffee on the house; that is service on the day, not a sponsorship.
- Five posts were taken out of the denominator because they are not about this shop. Three are reviews of neighbours — the bakery on the ground floor, the bulgogi house on the same basement level, and a pasta restaurant in the next building. In each the check-in names a different business and Sambat gets a single passing line. The other two are not visits at all: one copies out the Naver Place review statistics and other people's reviews without ever saying what the writer ate, and one is a machine-written puff piece wedged between health-supplement sales links, with no prices anywhere and even the subway exit number contradicting all twenty-five real posts.
- Two different things get said here: the room is big, and the tables are close. Several writers note the seat count and the private rooms and say a group would be comfortable — but one of them adds in the same breath that while the room is large and clean, the tables sit near each other, and another says the spacing has tightened noticeably since his last visit, enough to make the room look cramped at a glance. A big room and elbow room are not the same claim.
- Writers disagree about the radish kimchi that comes with everything. Many call it crisp and cold and the right foil for the quiet noodles — one says he kept reaching for it before the food arrived, another that they piled it high even for a solo diner. But an August 2026 post says it has lost its bite, its ferment and its savour compared with before. Whether that is a difference of palate or a change in the kitchen, we cannot tell from the posts.
- One post gives a different opening time. Thirteen say 11:30 to 21:00 every day, with last orders at 20:30. An April 2026 post says it opens at 11:00. That writer gives no closing time, so we could not record the hours from it — only the last order. We could not establish whether the doors open at 11:00 or 11:30.
- No post here describes bringing a child. One writer reports seeing a high chair, but that writer came alone and the suggestion that it would suit a family is his own guess. Nobody writes about a changing table, or about what a child would eat here.
