Pyeonghaeok

평해옥 Pyeonghae is an old place name in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, and ok means house; the posts repeat the restaurant's word that its crab comes from Uljin.

Compiled from 27 blog posts read in fullSources →

Pyeonghaeok is a small hanok restaurant down the Nagwon-dong monkfish-stew alley off Jongno 3-ga Station exit 5, at the edge of Ikseon-dong. There is one menu, the Pyeonghaeok bansang, ordered per head for two or more: soy and spicy marinated crab, a minari pancake with dried shrimp, raw-squid salad, grilled mackerel and a clear crab-and-tofu stew, with six side dishes and yakgwa with tea to finish. It is 33,000 won per person now and was 29,000 won before September 2026. We read 30 posts dated May 27 to October 15, 2026; 27 of them describe an actual meal.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The price went up in September 2026. Four posts up to September 10 give 29,000 won (one just says 'in the 20,000s'); posts from September 16 on give 33,000 won. A September 25 post noted the rise and said it now made them weigh it against other set-meal places. Eleven posts called it good value for what arrives, all written after the rise. No post called it expensive.
  2. It is a place for talking over the meal: 15 posts said it was quiet. Several describe the room split in two, and two sat on a side with only two tables. That said, the same 'small and quiet' wording recurs almost verbatim across the templated posts noted below.
  3. People book ahead: 8 posts reserved through Naver, and 5 said they were seated straight away — for example at 6:30 on a weekday evening and 12:30 on a Monday. One Saturday-lunch visitor found it unexpectedly empty enough to walk in. No post describes queuing.
  4. Foreign diners are common: 6 posts saw them in the room — two Japanese guests, a table from Australia, groups bringing foreign friends. One writer took a foreign friend and taught them how to eat raw crab. The line that foreigners love the place is hearsay and we did not count it.
2 more
  1. You walk from the subway: 6 posts describe the route from Jongno 3-ga exit 5 into the Nagwon-dong monkfish-stew alley, taking three, about five and about seven minutes. The 'two minutes on foot' in nearly every post is copied from the listing.
  2. Tables are timed: 2 posts mention an 80-minute limit, and one found it plenty for a leisurely crab meal with a friend.

Almost every post says there is no parking, mostly by copying the listing and its two nearby lots. One post came by car and parked at the Piccadilly Plus garage because the alley leaves nowhere closer.

Where it is

Map showing where Pyeonghaeok is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

You walk from the subway: 6 posts describe the route from Jongno 3-ga exit 5 into the Nagwon-dong monkfish-stew alley, taking three, about five and about seven minutes. The 'two minutes on foot' in nearly every post is copied from the listing.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 27 posts read)

Only one post mentions the floor: it is on the ground floor and easy to find. No other post says.

Nobody wrote whether the entrance has a step, or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. That means we do not know, not that there is a barrier.

No one described the toilet from experience; 'separate men's and women's toilets' appears only in copied listing text.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Many posts follow one template. 14 of the 30 repeat the same lines in the same order — seats up to 30, Pyeonghae is a place name in Uljin, between Jongno 3-ga and Anguk stations — and 2 of those disclose sponsorship. One more is an influencer-program visit, one says the writer paid, and the rest say nothing about money. The claim that the crab comes from Uljin is the restaurant's own and we did not use it as evidence.
  • Opening hours are copied inconsistently: closing at 21:30 in 10 posts, 21:20 in 9, 21:00 in 2 and 20:00 in 1. The break is 15:00–17:00 almost everywhere, with one post saying 18:00. Seven posts say it closes only on holiday days, but three posts from October 11–15 list Mondays off — and one writer ate there on Monday, September 14. Check before going on a Monday.
  • The price is 33,000 won per person for the set, two or more. One post says any extra dish costs 25,000 won. Nobody gave drink prices, and corkage appears only in copied listing text.
  • Posts disagree on private rooms: one sat in a large room that takes groups, one says there are no separate rooms but the space is divided, and one calls it divided 'like rooms'.
  • Twelve posts give the phone number 010-4896-8002; two give 02-6012-5988 and two give 0507-1321-5992. Most who booked did so through Naver reservations.
  • One post alone complained about the rice, calling it dry and like day-old rice; no other post faulted it.
