초원식당 Chowon means a grassy meadow and sikdang simply means eatery.

Compiled from 25 blog posts read in fullSources →

A frozen-pork-belly grill house in the lane beside the Tapgol Park wall near Jongno 3-ga station. People come for the street seating: red plastic stools and round tables set out along the alley. Flash-frozen pork belly, beef brisket and pork intestine are 18,000 won per 180 g, and the house set of two portions of pork belly plus one of brisket is 53,000 won. Kimchi, sprouts and fernbrake go on the grill in the pork fat, and the meal ends with fried rice (5,000 won) that you fry yourself in the leftover fat. It opens at 5 p.m. We read 27 posts dated 24 September to 15 October 2026, 25 of them first-hand visits. We set aside one post that was really about another restaurant and counted only once a visit that the same blogger posted twice.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The outdoor tables are the draw. Twenty-two posts describe the tables out on the street: red plastic stools, round tables, and the old stone wall of Tapgol Park behind you. Post after post says the outside seats are the first to fill on autumn evenings.
  2. Expect to wait in the evening. Fifteen posts say they queued and one walked straight in on a weekday evening. The waits people recorded were 7–8 minutes, 10, 10, 10, an hour, an hour, and an hour and a half, and some posts mention 6, 10, 29 or 40 parties ahead. Even right after opening there was a line: one Saturday visitor arrived at 5:20 p.m. and waited 90 minutes. You sign up on a machine or tablet out front and get a KakaoTalk message or a call; remote queueing isn't available.
  3. The queue is mostly for the outdoor tables. Twelve posts note an indoor room with round tables, and several say that telling staff you'll sit inside gets you in quickly. The folding doors stay open, so you still see the street from inside.
  4. Side dishes arrive on a tray: kimchi, green-onion kimchi, bean sprouts, fernbrake and lettuce. Thirteen posts say you top them up yourself at the self-serve bar inside. Most writers treat grilling the kimchi and fernbrake in the pork fat as the way to eat here.
5 more
  1. Cleanliness comes up in ten posts, mostly about the restroom: one writer remarked that a decent restroom is a luxury at street-side places, yet this one is kept up.
  2. Eight posts say it was easy to walk to from Jongno 3-ga station. The '141 m from Exit 5, next to the Wongaksa free-meal centre' line is copied from the map listing; writers' own estimates were two to three minutes or five.
  3. Six posts found the portions large: the set meat comes heaped in an earthenware pot, and even a single portion of intestine was more than expected.
  4. Three posts said the meat had no off smell, including the intestine: a writer who normally avoids it said it hardly smelled and grilled up crisp.
  5. Eight posts went as a couple, husband or partner. It reads as a date spot, and pairs usually order the three-portion set.

Getting inside

Toilet inside5 of 25 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 25 posts

No one described the floor or any stairs from experience; the '1st floor' in the address is the registered listing, so we did not count it. That means nobody wrote about it, not that there is nothing to say.

Nobody mentioned an entrance step or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. All we know of the outdoor area is plastic stools and tables in the lane.

Five posts say the restroom is inside the restaurant. One notes that the pojangmacha street nearby has almost none, so you'd otherwise use the subway station's.

Only one post says the restrooms are separated by gender, and nobody mentioned an accessible restroom.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Opinions on space split one to one: one post found it roomy enough for groups, another warned that people who dislike cramped, stuffy rooms may be uncomfortable.
  • Only one post went with friends and none with family or children; we don't know whether it suits kids or has high chairs.
  • Fifteen posts give the same hours, daily from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., but nearly all copied them from the map listing. One says there is no closing day; nobody recorded a last-order time or afternoon break.
  • Many posts copy the number 0507-1378-3696, but none says whether you can book by phone. One notes there is no remote queueing; you register on the machine out front.
  • Prices agree across nearly all posts. One post lists the pork set at 52,000 won, but that writer disclosed a partial discount from the restaurant. Another gives the beef set as 33,000 won where everyone else says 55,000. Two people having the set, fried rice and drinks spent roughly 60,000–70,000 won.
  • One post says the place recently reopened after a remodel, but that is hearsay, and no post dates it or describes the earlier room, so we did not record it as a change. That post and one other follow the same template (pleasant room, clean restroom, free makgeolli for a review, friendly staff), and one of them gets the set contents and the station exit wrong, so both read like sponsored copy. A map listing copied into another post shows TV appearances for chicken soup dishes, which hints the menu here once differed, but our posts can't confirm it.
