Korean

Hwangnam

황남 Hwangnam is the Hwangnam-dong quarter of Gyeongju, the old Silla capital — the house dresses its Seoul dining room in Silla motifs and brass tableware.

Compiled from 10 blog posts read in fullSources →

A Korean restaurant in the basement of the Yongbieocheonga building behind Sejong Center, between Gwanghwamun and Gyeongbokgung stations. The draw is the Hwangnam hansang — dried croaker, two kinds of crab, spicy pork, beef brisket and fried eggplant on one table, 30,000 won a head with a two-person minimum — and, at dinner, Silla LA galbi at 67,000 won per kilo; lunch also offers single trays at 15,000–26,000 won. We read 18 posts dated April 19 to October 15, 2026; 10 of them (June 25 to October 15) describe an actual meal. Two posts from the house's own blog and one 'planning to go' list were not counted, and five unrelated or spam posts were set aside.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. You don't grill the ribs yourself. Of the five posts that ate the LA galbi, four say it comes fully cooked from the kitchen in a brass dish set over a small burner — one writer only had to take the meat off the bone, another let it reduce further with the onions underneath. One warns that the burner makes the rim of the brass dish hot enough to avoid touching.
  2. There are separate rooms off the main hall. Five posts saw them — one found a large family dining behind a partition wall, another counted two rooms apart from the hall. Four posts call the place spacious, and one group of eight said they sat comfortably.
  3. No post calls it expensive. Five say it is good value, pointing to what 30,000 won buys: beef, pork, dried croaker, two kinds of crab and soy-marinated shrimp in one sitting.
  4. Those who ate the crab and croaker found them not over-salted — four posts say so and none disagrees. One post, dining with British guests, reports the crab and croaker went untouched by the visitors while the fried eggplant, pork and brisket disappeared. The '2.6 salinity soy' line is the house's own description, repeated by bloggers.

Getting inside

In a basement4 of 10 posts

We don't know whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in — nobody wrote about it. The house's own blog says the building's elevator and escalator reach the basement, but that is the house speaking, not a diner. Four posts describe going down to the basement level.

We don't know whether the restroom is inside the restaurant. Two posts list separate men's and women's restrooms, but both lines are copied listing blocks, so we didn't count them.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 13 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Seven posts from October 3–15, 2026 share the same phrases and order — 'Silla aesthetics', brassware, the tip to wrap gochugaru-greens in seaweed, year-end team dinners — and one still carries a half-deleted review-count widget. None discloses sponsorship; only one shows a receipt to say it paid its own way.
  • No post mentions waiting — which means nobody wrote about it, not that there is no wait. One found it busy near the end of lunch, another saw a steady stream on a holiday lunch. The party of eight booked ahead.
  • Seven posts give the same hours — daily 11:00–21:00, break 15:30–16:30, last order 20:30 — but all are copied listing blocks. One says there is no regular closing day.
  • Prices are from September–October 2026 posts; one June post gives the same 30,000 won for the set.
  • Six posts copy the number 0507-1311-6750. Reservations are taken through Naver and by phone; one post passes on that rooms and groups over 18 should call ahead.
