Daehangno Gorae
대학로 고래 Gorae reads as 'whale', but the name is taken from the idiom gojin-gamnae (苦盡甘來, 'after the bitter comes the sweet') — its first and last syllables; Daehangno is the theatre district it sits in.

A gyukatsu and tonkatsu house on Daehak-ro 11-gil, near exit 4 of Hyehwa Station. The draw is the butter gyukatsu (16,500 won for 130 g): a mini grill is set at your table and you finish the beef cutlet yourself in melted butter. Many diners add the charcoal black katsu (18,000 won) and the spicy cold soba (12,500 won); you order by QR code at the table. We read 30 posts from February to October 2026. Twelve record an actual meal. Fifteen posted over three days in late October share the same directions, the same hashtags and not a single price, so we did not count them. The other three are listings or copied information.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.
What sets it apart
- There is often a wait, but not always. Five posts waited: three parties ahead after 6 pm following a play, about ten minutes at dinner peak, two parties after lunch, a wait around 1 pm on a holiday, and a long line seen on the way out. Two did not: one called it quiet at 5 pm on a weekend, another walked straight in on a weekend. The list is on paper, not an app — three posts say you write your name on a board at the door, and one recommends booking through Naver instead.
- There is somewhere to wait. Three posts mention it: a separate waiting area at the entrance so you need not stand, chairs beside the name board, and a waiting area packed with people.
- You order on your phone from a QR code on the table — five posts say so. One couple who ordered three dishes were moved from a cramped two-seater to a four-top; the same post notes baskets for bags.
- Leave a Naver review and you get a plate of curry or a drink; three posts took it, all choosing curry. Without the event the curry is 4,500 won (one post, June 2026).

- The chilli soba is hot. Two of the four who ate it said so — one had the chilli on the side and still found it spicy. A third only said it was good despite expecting heat.

Where it is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.
From the station
3 posts say it is walkable from the station.
Getting inside
The only floor information is '1F' in the address; no diner described it. That is an absence of reports, not evidence otherwise.
Nobody says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or pushchair gets in. High chairs appear only in copied info blocks.
Nobody says where the toilet is or whether it is separated by sex.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 30 posts we gathered, 18 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
| 2026-10-28 | 6 posts in one day |
|---|---|
| 2026-10-27 | 5 posts in one day |
| 2026-10-26 | 4 posts in one day |
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- Four posts found the staff friendly; one disagreed — it had to ask for kimchi and soup and felt the part-timer's response was curt (October 2026).
- Opinions split on size: one post called it spacious, another smaller than expected. Four agreed it was clean.
- Speed is a draw too: one post found dishes slow, another said they came quickly and four people finished in an hour.
- It is a walk from Hyehwa Station; three posts say exit 4 is closest, and copied directions give 248 m — five minutes along Daemyeong-gil, then round the Gimgane Gimbap corner. Nobody mentions buses.
- Nine posts give the same hours — daily 11:30–21:30, last order 20:30 — but every one is copied from the listing. One each adds no break time and no closing day.
- Prices look unchanged from June to October 2026. Two people sharing a cutlet and a soba spend around 30,000 won; one post had a set (butter gyukatsu, chilli soba, two drinks) for 31,000 won and found it a bit pricey for Daehak-ro.
- Three phone numbers appear: 0507-1462-3333 in six posts, and two others once each. Bookings go through Naver; copied info says walk-ins are seated even when bookings are full.
