Chinese

Cheonghwawon

청화원 Cheonghwa is the Korean reading of 清華, 'clear and splendid', and won means garden; the shop's own description says the name comes from a Qing-dynasty garden where nobles strolled and talked.

Compiled from 28 blog posts read in fullSources →

Cheonghwawon is a Taiwanese-style Chinese restaurant down the alley from Hyehwa Station exit 4, toward CGV, taking up both floors of its building. The draw is uyuk dosakmyeon (10,500 won), wide knife-shaved noodles in beef broth with braised shank, and people share it with dumplings like shumai, xiaolongbao and crystal shrimp-chive dumplings (9,500 won each), guobaorou (17,000 won) and rice bowls (9,800 won). Two posts said three dishes for two came to 37,000 won. You order and pay up front on a tablet or kiosk at the table (16 posts). We read 30 posts from 17 March to 27 October 2026; 28 describe an actual meal there, and we set aside one that was really about a nearby café.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The 8 posts that call the food spicy and the 5 that say it isn't are mostly describing different dishes. The plain beef noodle soup was 'no heat, mild' and 'not spicy at all', and children ate it. Three found the Sichuan version numbing and hot; one said it was milder than expected. One post called the broth just a touch spicy without deciding.
  2. Eleven posts said the fried dishes were crisp, mostly the guobaorou: potato-starch batter with a knobbly crunch that held up under the sauce. One post ate the cream shrimp ten minutes after photographing it and it still crackled.
  3. Waits depend on timing. One post took a queue number around 7 p.m. on a Friday, with both floors full, and got in after about five minutes; two walked straight in, at 7 p.m. on a weekday and at 5 p.m. Three noted the place was still busy after 3 p.m.
  4. The free sides are roasted peanuts and zha cai. Four posts from June to August helped themselves to more at a self-serve bar, and one more had the peanuts refilled (5 in all). October posts describe the sides being brought to the table; we can't tell from the posts whether the self-serve bar is gone.
3 more
  1. Seven posts said prices were lower than expected: noodles, dumplings and rice bowls mostly run 9,500 to 10,500 won, and one post ate its fill for about 10,000 won a head. Nobody called it expensive, and prices stay the same in every post from May to October 2026.
  2. Four posts noticed many foreign diners: Taiwanese customers, several languages at nearby tables, and one writer ordered the tiger rice bowl because the locals around her all had it.
  3. Nine posts describe walking from Hyehwa Station: two or three minutes from exit 4 into the one-way alley toward CGV, with the bus stop on the Sungkyunkwan side also close, according to two. Several mention the green neon sign standing out in the alley.

From the station

Nine posts describe walking from Hyehwa Station: two or three minutes from exit 4 into the one-way alley toward CGV, with the bus stop on the Sungkyunkwan side also close, according to two. Several mention the green neon sign standing out in the alley.

Getting inside

Second floor24 of 28 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 3 (of 28 posts read)
Toilet inside3 of 28 posts

Both floors are dining rooms; 24 posts mention the upstairs. Downstairs has a window bar counter plus two- and four-seat tables, upstairs a bigger hall with group tables for four to eight. Two posts were sent upstairs because the ground floor was full, and three say they ate on the ground floor. Two mention climbing stairs to reach the second floor.

No post says whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. Two posts mention stairs to the second floor and none mentions a lift. That doesn't mean there isn't one; nobody wrote about it.

Three posts say the restroom is inside the restaurant; one called it small and one placed it on the ground floor. Nobody said whether it is split by gender.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Twenty-five posts give hours and 24 agree: daily 11:00 to 22:20, last order 21:50; one says it closes at 22:00. On closures, 7 say only Lunar New Year's Day, 1 says major holidays, 1 says open every day. Most of this is copied from the listing.
  • Only one post, a sponsored one, lists a phone number; two others say there is no phone line. No one says whether reservations are taken.
  • Ten posts appeared within a week, 21 to 27 October 2026, with the same info block and the same three dishes. Only one post (from August) discloses sponsorship, and another admits it wasn't self-paid. Keep in mind that this cluster weighs heavily in the counts on this page.
