Mangwon-dong Makguksu

망원동 막국수 Makguksu is the cold buckwheat-noodle dish of Gangwon Province, so the name simply means 'the Mangwon-dong makguksu shop'; the 'by 해와달' (Sun and Moon) that several posts add points to the owner's parents' noodle house in Donghae.

A buckwheat-noodle shop a two-to-five-minute walk from exit 2 of Mangwon station, up a short flight of stairs on the half-floor of 56 Donggyo-ro 9-gil (the second floor of the same building is a different restaurant, Noju). The house says it carries on the recipes of the owner's parents' shop in Donghae, Gangwon Province. You order by QR code at the table, and warm broth and seasoned chives arrive first. Cold or spicy makguksu costs 11,000 won, the pollack-topped hoe makguksu 13,000 won, the buckwheat crepe 8,000 won and dumplings 7,000 won; from October to March a potato-dumpling soup (12,000 won) is added. Noodles plus a side come to roughly 20,000 won a person. We read 32 posts dated 6 August to 17 October 2026; 11 are about this shop and all 11 describe an actual meal. The other 21 were about Noju upstairs or other places, and we set them aside.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Expect a short wait at lunch. Four posts say they queued: about four minutes at noon on a Friday, and about five minutes at 1:30 pm on a weekday after writing a name on the waiting list. Another said there was a weekday line but it moved fast; the Friday post noticed the line kept growing while they ate. Three posts mention many older diners at lunchtime.
  2. Nine posts say the portions are big: a fistful of pollack on the hoe makguksu, a lot of fish for 2,000 won more than the plain version, two people stuffed after four dishes. No post calls it expensive, and two call it good value.
  3. Six posts got two free buckwheat dumplings for leaving a receipt review. They are large, meat-filled, with chewy buckwheat skins; a plate costs 7,000 won. One writer preferred them to a well-known dumpling shop in nearby Mangwon Market.
  4. The kitchen is open, with bar seats facing it. Five posts mention the open kitchen, one watching noodles being pressed to order. Six describe a mix of two- and four-person tables, a long communal table and bar seats, so solo diners have a place. Six posts say ordering is by QR code at the table.

Parking

Posts saying you cannot1 of 11 posts

One post, from someone who drove, says the restaurant has no parking of its own and they used the Mangwon Market public car park five minutes' walk away. Another says no parking information was posted; the 'no parking' lines in three other posts were copied from listings.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 3 (of 11 posts read)
Step at the entrance4 of 11 posts

You climb stairs to get in. Four posts mention steps at the entrance, and three place the shop on a 'floor 1.5' — a half-level up, not a basement. One post said second floor, but that floor belongs to another restaurant.

No post mentions arriving with a wheelchair or stroller. Four mention steps at the entrance and none mentions a lift or ramp, so we do not know whether there is a step-free way in.

Nobody wrote about the toilet — whether it is inside the shop or separated by gender. That means we do not know, not that there is none.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Spiciness is a split call: two posts found the sauce milder than expected, two found the hoe makguksu sauce slightly spicy.
  • Five posts published on 15–16 October repeat nearly the same introduction (the Donghae parent shop, house-made Bongpyeong buckwheat noodles, a TV appearance), and two of them disclose sponsorship. Claims about Bongpyeong buckwheat, daily-made noodles, Sokcho pollack and Boseong pork are the shop's own words, copied by writers; we do not treat them as evidence. Four posts did see a wall full of celebrity autographs themselves.
  • Ten posts give the same opening hours, 11:00 to 21:00; nine give a 15:00–16:00 break and eight say it closes on Mondays. Last orders are 14:30 and 20:30. Most of this was copied from the door sign or the map listing; one post alone lists Tuesday to Saturday, leaving Sunday out.
  • Four posts copy the phone number 0507-1430-5016. No one says they booked ahead, so we do not know whether reservations are taken; one post merely copied a September 2026 Naver booking-points promotion.
