Korean

Gyehwajeong

계화정 Gyehwajeong is written with the characters for chicken (鷄), flower (花) and pavilion (亭); the house says it means sharing the flower-like aroma of chicken over fire in a warm place.

A dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) restaurant on the ground floor of the Brownstone mall in Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, between Hagye and Junggye stations. Iron-plate dakgalbi is 13,000 won per person and comes out of the kitchen fully cooked, so nobody stirs at the table; fried rice to finish is 3,000 won. On 19 August 2026 it moved from units 150–151 on the street side of the building to unit 124-1 further inside. We read 30 posts from 24 May to 22 October 2026; 27 describe actually eating here (6 at the old spot, 21 at the current one).

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. You don't cook at the table. Of the 27 posts from diners, 20 say the chicken arrived already cooked. Five say the fried rice is also taken back to the kitchen and returned to crisp over a low flame. One post on the current room mentions an open kitchen where you can see the flames flare as each order is cooked.
  2. Side dishes are topped up from a self-serve bar; 19 posts say so. The side people mention most is shiitake mushroom in wasabi: one diner refilled it twice, another about four times. Aprons are handed out by staff on request.
  3. Heat comes in levels; several posts relay the house guide that level 0.5 is about Shin Ramyun and level 1 about Buldak. Eight posts found it spicy, one even at the base level; two did not (one at level 0.5, one with the soy-sauce version). Two posts were told the soy, rosé and salt versions carry no chili at all.
  4. You order on a tablet or kiosk at the table; 13 posts say so. Three posts describe staff bringing a paper menu to first-timers to explain heat levels and popular dishes, and one says you pay at the counter on the way out.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 6 (of 27 posts read)

Nobody mentioned a step at the door or coming in with a wheelchair or stroller. One post notes you don't have to climb stairs, six say it is on the ground floor, and one diner got lost among the mall's many entrances.

No diner wrote about the restroom from experience. One post's info list says it is outside the shop and another's copied block says it is split by gender; we did not count either.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The restaurant moved within the same building on 19 August 2026, so we did not count seating, parking or hours from the six June posts as current. Some later posts still give the old unit numbers (150–151), copied from old listings. One post warns that maps show two pins and the inner one is the current shop.
  • Opening hours changed twice after the move, and nearly every post copied them from a listing. Posts from late August to 12 September give 10:30–22:30 (to 23:30 on Fridays and Saturdays); posts from 16–27 September give 10:00–22:00; the four October posts give 10:30–21:30 with last orders at 21:00. Four posts say it closes on the day of Seollal and Chuseok. Check before you go.
  • No post describes actually waiting. Four mention waiting chairs outside the door, one guesses there is a queue at dinner, and one found the room full on a Monday evening. Three say you can book ahead.
  • Prices are listed per person. One couple paid 31,500 won for two portions of iron-plate dakgalbi plus udon noodles and rice balls. Prices in June and September posts match. Eleven posts give the phone number as 0507-1425-2250; one June post gives 02-979-2222.
  • The same promotional lines recur across many posts: 'a hearty lunch spot by day, a pojangmacha by night', 'grilled by experts over the grate', 'just pick up your chopsticks', and the fried omelette roll as a must-try. Only three posts disclose sponsorship, but we treat these lines as the restaurant's own copy and did not count them. Six posts mention free dumplings for a photo review.
