Myeongdong Dakhanmari Geoseong-jeom

명동닭한마리 거성점 Dakhanmari means 'one whole chicken' — a whole bird simmered in a broad pot at the table; Myeongdong is the brand name (the shop is actually in the Dongdaemun chicken alley) and jeom means branch.

Compiled from 12 blog posts read in fullSources →

A branch of Myeongdong Dakhanmari in the Dongdaemun chicken alley (Jong-ro 252-9), between Dongdaemun and Jongno 5-ga stations. A whole chicken for two (33,000 won) simmers in a wide pot at your table; you mix your own dipping sauce from mustard, chili paste, garlic, soy, vinegar and chives, then finish with noodles (2,000 won) in the broth. We read 17 posts from 15 September to 17 October 2026; five were about the main shop or the Sijo branch next door and were set aside. All 12 remaining posts describe a visit, though eight look like promotional pieces written to the same template.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Staff cut the chicken at your table. Eight posts say that once the pot boils, the owner or a server snips it into pieces with scissors; one describes them turning the bird with tongs to find the joints, another says they came back to check it was cooking. Two posts say a server also mixed the dipping sauce for them.
  2. Rice cake and chicken gizzards come free in small amounts. Eight posts say they arrived with the chicken as a standard extra, and two say the amount matched the number of diners. Ordered separately, each is 2,000 won.
  3. Many diners are tourists. Seven posts saw lots of foreign, especially Japanese, guests inside; one evening visitor guessed over 90% were foreigners, with suitcases piled at the door. Several mention the how-to-eat sign and menu are also in Japanese, English and Chinese.
  4. Five posts call the portions generous: one pot fed two well, and the 2,000-won add-ons came heaped on the plate. One family of four was told to order by headcount and got two chickens.

Getting inside

Second floor1 of 12 posts

No post says which floor you enter on. One post mentions a large second-floor room used by groups; nobody says how you get up there.

We don't know whether there is a step at the door or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in — not because there isn't, but because no one wrote about it.

We don't know where the toilet is or whether it is separated by gender; no post mentions it.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Four posts say it is a short walk from Dongdaemun or Jongno 5-ga station; one says to enter the alley from Dongdaemun exit 9, another that a bus stop is close. Since it sits inside the alley, several say to look for the red sign.
  • No post reports waiting at this branch. One found it nearly full on arrival and another saw almost every table taken on a weekend; one was sent here because the main shop and Sijo branch had no seats. That isn't proof there's no wait — just that no one wrote about one.
  • Opening hours come only from copied listing blocks: six posts give 10:00–23:00 on weekdays and 10:00–24:00 on weekends, two give 10:00–23:00 without days. No one mentions a closing day, break time or last order.
  • Seven posts agree the chicken pot is 33,000 won. The braised chicken is 36,000 won in three posts and 33,000 in one. One post totals a meal for two with noodles at 35,000 won.
  • Five posts give the same phone number, 0507-1368-8249. Reservations appear only in one copied listing line ('Naver bookings for 3 or more'); no one wrote about actually booking.
  • Eight posts from 15–25 September 2026 repeat the same three search phrases and follow the same structure; only one discloses sponsorship. Read the praise for friendliness and taste with that in mind.
