진옥화할매원조닭한마리 Jin Ok-hwa is the founding grandmother (halmae means 'grandma'), wonjo means 'the original', and dakhanmari literally means 'one whole chicken' — the house's only dish, a whole chicken boiled at the table; the old name was Jinhalmae Dakjip, 'Grandma Jin's chicken house'.

A dakhanmari house in the chicken alley between Jongno 5-ga and Dongdaemun stations, using a three-storey main building and an annex next door. There is one dish — a whole chicken, 33,000 won — so it arrives unasked in an aluminium pot with potato and leek; staff cut it with scissors and you boil it at the table. You add rice cakes, leek or noodles (2,000 won) or potato (3,000 won) and mix your own dipping sauce; kimchi and water are self-serve. What sets it apart
- Expect to queue. 28 posts mention waiting; 5 walked straight in (a Monday at opening, a rainy weekday, a summer weekend just after noon). Of the 17 that gave a time: about 10 minutes twice, 15 minutes three times, 20 minutes six times, around 30 minutes five times, and over an hour once. You take a plastic number at the door and watch a board outside the building; there is no remote queue, so you wait out front. Many say the line moves faster than it looks — one got number 41 and was seated in 20 minutes.
- Nine posts mention a waiting area with seats, to the right of the main entrance. On busy days the chairs fill up and people stand in the narrow alley.
- 27 posts say staff cut the chicken at the table with scissors. Some add that staff light the burners in batches and go table to table taking rice-cake and noodle orders; one noted they may not get to you when busy. Many relay the house rule that noodles can be ordered only once, because the broth thickens.
- It is hot in summer. Six posts said the air conditioning cannot keep up with the boiling pots — one measured 31 degrees at their table, another found all three floors hot. One more sweated despite the AC. Several advise going in winter; an October 2025 post found the open windows pleasant.

The main building runs from the ground floor to the third, and 14 posts were seated on the second or third. Numbers are handed out on the ground floor. Two posts liked the window seats with the wide-open windows. Several relay that the annex opens at noon.
No post mentions a basement; seating is on the ground to third floors and in the annex, and one post climbed stairs to the third. Nobody says whether there is a lift.
No one says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. That is unknown, not a no.

What we do not know
- Service splits: 3 posts found staff kind, 4 found them curt, and 2 had both (a terse greeter but friendly floor staff). The curt reports include a glare when asking for noodles early, and a cold reception even on a quiet day.
- Posts agree there are many seats, but split on roominess: 5 called it spacious, 3 said tables are packed so tight you shift every time someone passes.
- Cleanliness splits too: 3 posts found it clean (one meant the toilet), 2 did not — one saw food scraps on the second-floor window ledge and dust hanging from the ceiling.
- The chicken is 33,000 won and add-ons 2,000–3,000. A September 2025 post said 30,000; from October 2025 every post says 33,000. One writer remembers 17,000–19,000 won on a first visit of unknown date. Four posts called it expensive; two thought so but felt the portion made up for it. Example bills: two people with two noodle portions paid 37,000 won; three women with four add-ons paid 44,000 plus beer.
- All opening hours are copied from listings: most give 10:30 to 1:00 a.m. daily, last order 23:30, no closing day, with the annex opening at noon. One post says it opens at 10:20 and another gives last order as 23:00. One noticed floors opening in turn after opening — ground, then second, then third.
- Two posts say there are no high chairs. The one family with children warned that the burners run hot at every table, so keep small hands away from the pot.
- The phone number 02-2275-9666 is copied in many posts. Nobody made a reservation; some relay that bookings are not taken. Several relay that groups over four must split across tables.
- The old name was Jinhalmae Dakjip; several posts saw it still on the sign, and one remembers that name from ten years ago. When it changed is unknown. The history — opened 1978, rebuilt after a 2008 fire, 280 seats — comes from the house or compiled sources, so we do not rely on it.
