Ikseon Yorok

익선요록 Ikseon is the neighborhood; yorok is an old word for a written record of recipes, a cookbook — one post gives this reading, citing an AI search summary.

A converted hanok in the Ikseon-dong lanes, a few minutes' walk from Jongno 3-ga station. You cross a short courtyard of stepping stones, sit at wooden tables on chairs, and eat rice bowls, hot pots and black charcoal noodles: grilled gopchang bowl ₩19,800 (medium), large beef-rib bowl ₩29,800, spicy pork bowl ₩14,800, bulgogi hot pot ₩36,000, with a small cold yeolmu noodle starter on the house. We read 30 posts from 29 Dec 2025 to 9 Oct 2026; 23 of them describe actually eating here.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Six posts noted many foreign diners — one put it at about half and half, another, on a public-holiday afternoon, said most of the room were tourists. Several mention menus and street boards in English, Japanese and Chinese.
  2. Five posts walked straight in — before 8 pm on a weekday, 8 pm on 7 September, 1:30 pm on a Saturday, just after opening, and around noon. None waited, though one who arrived just after 11:30 on a weekend said a line built up while they ate. Two posts said bookings aren't taken; one was turned down by phone for a weekend.
  3. Six posts found the portions generous. One disagreed: in December 2025 a large gopchang bowl looked so small the diner asked staff to confirm it was a large — same bowl as the medium, they concluded, just more meat.
  4. Two posts found the bowls and noodles salty; one who had the chicken hot pot said it was not salty at all.
2 more
  1. Four posts mention window seats along big panes facing the hanok lane; one describes a glass roof over the inner courtyard.
  2. Six posts walked from Jongno 3-ga station, putting it at three to five minutes; one used exit 4, another came up on the Line 5 side.

Getting inside

Step at the entrance1 of 23 posts

No one described the floor from experience; the address says ground floor, and one post mentions seating one step up from the courtyard. That isn't confirmation there's no upper or lower level — nobody said.

No post entered with a wheelchair or stroller. Several describe stepping stones over gravel in the entry courtyard, and one notes a step up from the courtyard to the seats. Step-free access is unknown.

Only one December 2025 post mentions the toilet — neither very dirty nor clean, no smell. Whether it's inside the restaurant or split by gender, nobody said.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 7 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-09-082 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • One post said the second of two dishes arrived only when the first was nearly finished — awkward if you plan to share. No other post commented on speed.
  • Opening hours come only from copied blocks and disagree: of ten posts, seven say 11:30–22:00 daily, two say 11:00, one (December 2025) says noon. Two blocks say no afternoon break, while one post mentions a weekend break ending at 5 pm. In August 2026 one visitor waited from 11:25 and left when the door was still shut at 11:35.
  • Prices are from July–October 2026 posts: rice bowls ₩14,800–29,800, hot pots ₩31,000–36,000, so most meals run ₩15,000–30,000 a head. Two posts called it expensive; the chicken hot pot is ₩31,000 in the two posts that ate it but ₩32,000 in a copied menu.
  • Several posts copy the number 070-4230-2220. No one booked by phone; two posts say reservations aren't taken, and the 'group bookings available' line is from a copied block.
  • Some posts are templated: a September 2026 Tistory post reuses a July post's sentences nearly verbatim, and there are two date-spot listicles, one self-declared compilation of others' reviews and one menu-only promo. None were counted.
  • In August 2026 one diner was told the beef-intestine hot pot was replaced by a short-rib hot pot during a menu revamp; no later post reports eating the original.
