Ikseondong Gogijip

익선동고기집 The name simply means 'the Ikseon-dong meat house' — the neighbourhood name plus gogijip, the everyday word for a Korean barbecue restaurant.

Compiled from 26 blog posts read in fullSources →

Ikseondong Gogijip is a barbecue house in a converted hanok on Ikseon-dong's galmaegisal alley, three to five minutes' walk from Jongno 3-ga station. Pork belly, pork skirt and pork neck all cost 18,000 won for a 180 g portion; you grill it yourself, with minari, bean sprouts and kimchi on the same plate. One couple paid 41,000 won for two portions and a bottle of soju. Most diners got steamed egg and soybean stew alongside, and some mention that the roof over the middle of the room opens up, giving an open-air feel indoors. We read 30 posts dated 17 August to 15 October 2026; after setting aside two about neighbouring shops and one list of other restaurants, we counted 26 first-hand visits.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. There are outdoor tables along the alley. Twelve of the 26 visits mention them. One diner arriving at 6 p.m. on a Saturday found the outdoor seats already full; another found them full on a weekday evening; a third gave up on them after 6. Others ate inside because of rain or heat. The claim that outdoor tables can't be reserved appears only in copied listing info.
  2. Nine posts say they saw foreign diners — including one eating alone, and a neighbouring table of foreigners enjoying the stew. Posts also note the menu is printed in English, Japanese and Chinese, with pictures. Nearly every post repeats that three Japanese chefs from the YouTube show Awesome Korea praised the place; that is the shop's own promotion, and we don't rely on it.
  3. Eleven posts describe the cuts as thick — neck that was "thick yet tender", belly sliced chunky. At 180 g a portion, one couple found two portions plenty.
  4. Five posts found the portions generous — one asked whether two portions could really be that much; two women split two portions plus fried rice and were full.

  1. It is easy by subway: eleven posts describe walking from Jongno 3-ga station — about three minutes from exit 6, or five from exit 3. One says: walk a little up the alley from exit 6 and turn left.
  2. No one reports queuing. One couple sat straight down on an early weekday evening; another said that even when busy, the room is big enough that waiting isn't a worry. One diner skipped the full outdoor tables rather than wait. Weekend queues are mentioned only as hearsay.

Where it is

Map showing where Ikseondong Gogijip is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

It is easy by subway: eleven posts describe walking from Jongno 3-ga station — about three minutes from exit 6, or five from exit 3. One says: walk a little up the alley from exit 6 and turn left.

Getting inside

We don't know about floors or stairs. The address says ground floor, but no visitor described the level they ate on or any stairs — which means no one wrote about it, not that there are none.

We don't know whether there's a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in; nobody mentioned it.

We don't know where the toilet is or whether it is split by gender. One post grumbles that outdoor drinking spots without toilets are hard going, but it isn't clear it refers to this shop, so we didn't count it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Almost every post repeats the same phrases — the preserved hanok interior, premium fresh meat, vegetables bought at dawn, a bucket-list spot for foreigners, a famous kimchi stew. We read these as a brief handed to bloggers and did not count them. Two posts disclose sponsorship, one was an invited review, and the rest say nothing. Air-conditioning was counted only where the writer described it first-hand (seven posts).
  • Posts disagree on whether the steamed egg and stew are free. Most say they came complimentary, several say they ordered them, one says they're free only before 8 p.m., and two got the egg through a Naver booking or listing coupon. Worth checking before you go.
  • Opening hours come only from copied listing blocks, and they differ: eleven give 11:00–23:00 on weekdays and 10:00–23:00 at weekends, four give 11:00–23:00 every day. No post mentions a break time or last order; two say it never closes.
  • Several posts give the phone number 02-6084-1259. One diner booked through Naver; the notes that small groups can reserve by phone and that outdoor tables can't be reserved come from copied info.
