Gyewonjip

계원집 Gye is the character for chicken (鷄) and jip means house; the shop's own blurb, quoted by bloggers, reads the name as aiming to be the foremost chicken kitchen.

Compiled from 30 blog posts read in fullSources →

Gyewonjip is a chicken restaurant on a side street near Hwagok Bondong Market in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. It serves dakhanmari (whole chicken in broth), a spicy version, dakbokkeumtang and jjimdak in a one-bird size for one or two and a bird-and-a-half for three or four. You mix shredded cabbage with soy sauce, mustard and chili paste as a dip, then finish with noodles or porridge in the broth. Posts from May to July 2026 give 28,000 won for dakhanmari, 29,000 for the spicy one, 30,000 for jjimdak and 31,000 for dakbokkeumtang (one-to-two size). Hours changed in early June 2026: it now opens at 5 pm Tuesday to Friday and noon on weekends, closed Mondays; before that it opened at 11:30 Wednesday to Sunday. We read 30 posts from April 23 to October 16, 2026, and all 30 describe an actual visit.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Ordering is done from the table. Eleven posts ordered on a tablet, pad or kiosk at the table, and one noted a sign above the wall menu asking guests to use table ordering.
  2. Nine posts mention brightly colored waiting chairs outside the door; one compared them to bus-stop benches, and an October post sat on them waiting for the 5 pm opening.
  3. No post reports waiting. Five say they walked straight in or found it quiet, including one arriving at 6:30 pm after work as nearly the first guests and one who got in right away on a weekend evening. One April post had no wait but had seen people queuing on evenings when passing. Others found it full by around 7 pm, so later evenings may differ.
  4. Walk from exit 3 of Hwagok Station on Line 5. Three posts gave the route themselves: straight along the main road then right into the alley (10 minutes), or toward Bondong Market and left at the alley by a soy-marinated crab shop (9 minutes). Figures like 595 m are mostly copied.
5 more
  1. Seventeen posts called the room spacious with generous gaps between tables. Seating is four-person tables: one post counted ten, another three on the right, four on the left and two in the middle, another guessed 10 to 12. One post alone said there were few tables and it was quiet.
  2. Fourteen posts found the portions large. Several couples sharing the one-to-two size were too full for porridge after the noodles; one group of three found the larger size, with three drumsticks, just right.
  3. No post found it salty. Six said it was mild or not salty, and two of them found it underseasoned: one adjusted the seasoning herself, another asked for salt with the jjimdak.
  4. Seven posts called the spicy dakhanmari and the braise spicy, but mildly so: one said the regular jjimdak was less hot than Shin Ramyun, another only slightly hot. One post called it peppery without being too hot.
  5. Nine posts mention that a Naver receipt review earns a free plate of glazed rice cakes, and two actually received it. Read this alongside how tightly the posts cluster in time.

Parking

8 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot8 of 30 posts

There is no parking at the shop; eight posts said so, two of them drove and walked from a nearby public lot. The lot most posts cite is Byeotgol Children's Park, about seven minutes' walk at 100 won per five minutes; one post found the Hwagok Bondong Market customer lot closer, about two minutes away. One post said there is room for about one car in front.

Where it is

Map showing where Gyewonjip is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

From the station

Getting inside

Toilet inside3 of 30 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 30 posts

No post describes which floor it is on. The address says ground floor and posts describe the open folding doors at the front, but nobody actually stated the floor.

We do not know whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in. That is not a no; none of the 30 posts mentioned it. One post saw a high chair.

Three posts say the restroom is inside, at the back to the left of the kitchen. One post saw separate men's and women's rooms and found them clean; other mentions of separate restrooms are copied listings.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Opening hours changed in early June 2026. Posts up to June 4 give an 11:30 opening Wednesday to Sunday (5 pm on Tuesdays) and weekday lunch specials; posts from June 11 agree on 5 pm to 11 pm Tuesday to Friday, noon to 11 pm on weekends with a 3 to 5 pm weekend break, last order 10 pm, closed Mondays. Most of those are copied listings; one post read them off the door. One June 20 post gave a 5:30 pm opening and a July 8 post still copied the old 11:30 time.
  • Prices are mostly consistent, with three exceptions. One August post gave 38,000 won for dakhanmari and one April post 34,000 for dakbokkeumtang, against 28,000 and 31,000 elsewhere. Drinks were 5,000 won (soju in April, beer in June), but an October post was surprised to find both at 4,000; that is the only post after the drop. One post found it pricey, two found it cheap.
  • Thirteen posts list the phone number, 0507-1356-0612. Naver reservations appear only in copied listings and no post says they booked; one post saw a reserved sign put on a table during the meal.
  • There are signs of promotion: 26 of the 30 posts fall between April 23 and July 20, 2026, and many carry nearly the same block of 19 hashtags. None discloses sponsorship; four say they paid themselves. Each post records its own order and prices, so we counted them, but the uniformly positive tone should be weighed. On delivery, one June post said there is none, while two copied listings from October say takeout and delivery are available.
