Ppopai Chikin

뽀빠이치킨 Ppopai is the Korean spelling of Popeye, the spinach-eating cartoon sailor, so the name simply reads Popeye Chicken.

Compiled from 24 blog posts read in fullSources →

An old chicken-and-beer joint at 48 Huam-ro, Yongsan, near Huam Market. It opens at 4 p.m.; people come for wet-batter old-style chicken (fried 18,000 won, half-and-half or sauced 20,000 won) with seafood tteokbokki (14,000 won), washed down with Terra draft (5,000 won for 500 ml) or draft Guinness (12,000 won for 580 ml). Popcorn-style corn snacks arrive when you sit, and many posts report a wait in the evening. We read 30 posts from June to October 2026; 25 describe an actual visit. Two were set aside as being about other places (a second-round restaurant, and a delivery from a different Popeye Chicken branch).

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Seventeen posts call the batter crisp — one says it is crunchy enough to hurt your hand, another that you can hear the next table biting into it. Thickness is disputed: three posts call the batter thick and lumpy, two call it thin, two call it medium. One warns that people who like a soft coating may find it a little hard.
  2. Twelve posts say the sauced chicken or the tteokbokki is spicy. The sauce is repeatedly described as an old-fashioned mix of gochujang and ketchup. Sweetness is split: four posts call it sweet, two say it is more hot than sweet. One post notes that visiting Japanese friends found the sauce a bit spicy.
  3. Expect to wait in the evening. Eight posts experienced or saw a queue, and two more only just got in. One waited almost an hour on a weekday evening; another saw a queue from 6:40 p.m. on a Tuesday; another had two parties ahead at dinnertime but got in quickly. One arrived at 6:40 on a Saturday with no wait and found a queue on the way out; another took the last table at 8 p.m. on a Saturday. Two posts describe a handwritten waiting list at the door, with the staff phoning you when a table frees up.
  4. Two posts say tables are limited to two and a half hours when people are waiting; one watched a staff member politely tell a long-staying table.
6 more
  1. The room is small. Seven posts say so, and the table counts they give are five four-seaters, six or seven, seven (three posts), about six four-seaters, eight parties at most, and close to ten parties. Posts mention tables packed tight and overhearing the next table. Only one post felt otherwise, saying the high ceiling of the single-storey building gave a bit of distance.
  2. Eleven posts saw celebrity autographs on the walls and ceiling, most pointing out those of Shin Dong-yup and Sung Si-kyung. One post saw the actor Kwon Yul at the next table last year; another says they have run into celebrities there twice.
  3. Six posts say a bowl of puffed corn comes free while you wait, along with pickled radish, salt, mustard and a dipping sauce.
  4. Seven posts say the portions are large. One says the birds are big enough that two people could not finish one; another had leftovers packed in a black plastic bag.
  5. Seven posts say it is reachable by public transport. Estimates from Seoul Station exit 10 range from 7–10 to 15 minutes on foot; one post notes that route is uphill and took a bus from Sookmyung Women's Univ. Station that stops right outside. Another says about two bus lines run to the door.
  6. Seven posts went with friends and three with a larger group or work party. A local regular suggests half-and-half or tteokbokki for two, both for three, and the whelk salad on top for five.

Parking

2 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot2 of 24 posts

Two posts say there is no parking; one adds that the market street makes even stopping outside difficult, and a takeout customer pulled over briefly in the alley above. The suggestion to use the nearby Huam market public car park comes from copied info blocks.

The door opens onto the kitchen, and the tables sit higher up. Two posts say so: one describes a narrow passage and three or four steps up to the seating, the other a slight split level with the kitchen below and tables above. One post describes it as a single-storey, ground-floor building.

No post mentions a wheelchair or stroller. We only know there are a few steps up to the seating, so we cannot say whether a wheelchair user could get to a table.

Two posts say the toilet is inside the shop, and both call it shared — we read that as unisex. One found it clean.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • One post waited 30 minutes for chicken at the evening rush and found it too long; two others simply say it takes about 20 minutes.
  • Fourteen posts give opening hours, all copied from listings. Most agree: Tuesday to Saturday 4 p.m. to midnight (last order 10:30), Sunday 4 to 10 p.m. (last order 8:30), closed Mondays. One post lists Monday to Saturday with a 10 p.m. close on Saturday instead. Two posts note early closing when ingredients run out, and one arriving near 10 p.m. on a Friday was the last table served chicken before it sold out.
  • Four posts call it cheap or good value and none call it expensive; one says only the Guinness was pricey but worth it. Just one post gives a per-head figure — about 15,000 won including draft beer. One post copies a menu note that the first order must be at least 15,000 won in food.
  • No post says whether reservations are taken — that is unknown, not a no. Four posts give the phone number 02-754-7853; one ordered takeout by phone 30 minutes ahead, and another joined the waiting list by phone before going.
  • Two things changed. Draft Guinness and a Guinness set first appear in posts from June 2026 as newly added. A September post says the interior was recently remodelled and the sign replaced, so earlier descriptions of the room may not match today. We also could not tell from the posts how this shop relates to the Geumho-dong original or the Geumnam Market 'No. 1' branch.
