Chinese

Hong Bok

홍복 Hongbok Hongbok (洪福) means great fortune — the sign carries the Chinese characters and 'SINCE 1958'.

Compiled from 17 blog posts read in fullSources →

A Chinese-Korean restaurant run by an ethnic-Chinese family, filling all five floors of a building at the mouth of Namdaemun Market, across from Shinsegae's flagship store. Meals include yuni jajangmyeon at 9,500 won, seafood gan-jajang at 13,000 and seafood jjamppong at 14,000; dishes run from sweet-and-sour pork (small, 27,000) and yurimgi (small, 32,000) to the house cold platter (small, 60,000). The hand-made fried dumplings (12,000) were ordered in 10 posts, more than anything else. Most posts come after the place appeared on Sung Si-kyung's YouTube show at the end of July 2026. We read 30 posts from 29 May to 6 October 2026: 19 by people who ate there, 8 that only describe or list it, and 3 we set aside as being about other places.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. There are many private rooms: 9 posts saw or ate in one. Posts describe rooms for four to eight on the second floor, a fifth floor made up only of rooms, one labelled VIP. A group that booked a room for dinner was told a room booking requires ordering at least two main dishes.
  2. Waits are split: 3 posts queued and 3 walked straight in. The waits given are 5 and 10 minutes; the 10-minute one was around 6 p.m. on a Saturday, in a long line along the left of the building that moved fast because of the many floors. A long-time regular wrote that this was the first time they ever had to wait. Friday evening, a weekend evening and the 11 a.m. opening had no wait; at opening there was a cool waiting spot on the ground floor, and the whole party must be present to be seated.
  3. Eight posts call the frying crisp, mostly about the dumplings, sweet-and-sour pork and chili shrimp. Two posts disagree about the yurimgi, finding it moist rather than crisp, or lacking crunch. Two posts found the dumplings sold out, at 1 p.m. on a weekday and 6 p.m. on a Saturday.
  4. Six posts say the seasoning is not heavy, about the jajang and the sweet-and-sour sauce. Four say the food is not greasy; one found the dumplings a little oily.

  1. Three posts say food comes out very fast, almost as soon as it is ordered.

Getting inside

Second floor6 of 17 posts
In a basementyes 0 · no 5 (of 17 posts read)
Lift to the floor2 of 17 posts

You enter on the ground floor and are often sent upstairs. Five posts mention coming in on the ground floor, 6 were seated on or saw the second floor, and 2 took the lift.

Nobody mentions a step, a ramp, or getting in with a wheelchair or pushchair — we don't know, which is not the same as there being none. Two posts mention the lift; one family took it to the fifth floor with children.

No one describes the toilets from experience; the note that they are separate by sex is copied from map listings, so we don't rely on it.

No one mentioned: Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 25 posts we gathered, 8 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Four posts call it expensive. A family of four paid about 97,000 won for dumplings, yurimgi, a large jajang, cold noodles, soju and soda; another balked at the entrance board where the featured dishes ran to about 60,000 won a head. Prices are from September 2026 posts; seafood jjamppong is given as 14,000 won in two posts and 12,500 in one copied listing.
  • Every post that gives hours says 11:00–21:00, closed Sundays, though most copy map listings. Last order is given variously as 20:00, 20:15, 20:20 and 20:30, and the break is 15:00–17:00 in seven posts but 16:00–17:00 in one May post; we can't tell whether it changed or was mistyped.
  • One post describes walking from Hoehyeon station; the '168 m from exit 7' line is copied from listings.
  • One post found the sweet-and-sour pork smelled of stale oil and meat, and that strong air-conditioning and plastic dishes cooled the food quickly. Other posts praised the pork, so this is one dissenting post.
  • One post booked a room. Several posts give the phone number 02-755-7633, but none says they reserved by phone; one called ahead to bring champagne but only says to ask the restaurant about corkage.
