Birch Coffee is the Seoul outpost of the New York coffee brand. Since April 2025 it has been on the third floor of 26 Daesagwan-ro 34-gil near Hannam Five-way Junction, sharing the floor with a lifestyle shop and selling coffee alongside cookies, butter bars and Basque cheesecake. An americano is 5,000 won; a latte or flat white is 6,000 won. Before that it was at 27 Seongsui-ro 16-gil in Seongsu, which closed at the end of March 2025 — the address registered on this page is that old Seongsu one. We read 19 posts from January 2025 to October 2026; 18 describe a visit (6 at Hannam, 12 at Seongsu).

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The board games and books moved with the shop. Seven posts mention board games such as chess and Rummikub — three at Hannam, four at Seongsu. One Seongsu-era group played Rummikub and cards; a Hannam visitor found a chessboard on a four-person table. Four posts mention a bookshelf stocked with books.
  2. Many people went back. Seven posts say they had been more than once (two at Hannam, five at Seongsu) — one called it the café she goes to lately, another stopped in every time she was in Seongsu and, on hearing of the move, vowed to visit the Hannam shop.
  3. Three Hannam posts call it quiet. A group of eight colleagues had the whole café to themselves; another visitor came on a weekend after other Hannam cafés were full and found seats free. Three Hannam posts mention window seats.
  4. Three posts describe the staff as warm, all of them meaning the owner. One names him as Jason, always greeting guests with the same smile, and says he made coffee in New York for years before coming back. Two Seongsu-era posts say much the same.

Getting inside

Lift to the floor1 of 13 posts

The Hannam shop is on the third floor. Two visitors said so, and one warned that the ground-floor entrance looks like an office lobby and is easy to miss.

Nobody wrote about steps at the Hannam entrance or whether a wheelchair or pushchair can get in. One post mentions the lift, noting it was dirty because of building work on another floor. This means we don't know, not that there is no access.

Nobody described the toilet at the Hannam shop. At the old Seongsu shop one writer said, in two posts, that you took a key to a toilet outside — but that was the old building.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 14 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Posts up to March 2025 describe the Seongsu shop; the 2026 posts describe Hannam. Seongsu announced its last day as 30 March (one post said the 31st), and a Hannam visitor noted the shop went up to a third floor with the move. The Seongsu ground-floor bar, upstairs tables, terrace, outside toilet and kerbside parking belong to the old shop, so we left them out of the counts for the current one. Two Hannam posts state that it moved from Seongsu.
  • No visitor described getting to the Hannam shop by subway or bus. Only an overview post without a visit suggests walking from Hangangjin Station or the Itaewon area.
  • No one wrote about queuing at the Hannam shop. One post found seats on a weekend; beyond that we don't know whether it gets busy.
  • Who people went with doesn't settle into one pattern: four went with friends, and one each went as a group of eight colleagues, with a husband, and alone.
  • Opening hours for the Hannam shop differ: two posts say 08:00–18:00 and one says 10:00–20:00; all three say it closes on Wednesdays. The Seongsu shop ran 09:00–20:00 and closed on Mondays.
  • Prices read the same before and after the move — 5,000 won for an americano, 6,000 won for a flat white. Only one Hannam visitor listed prices, so dessert prices come from 2025 Seongsu posts. The remark that things were pricey refers to the shop's homewares, not the coffee.
  • A phone number appears only in one January 2025 post from the Seongsu days, so we can't say it still works. No post mentions taking reservations.
  • We can't say whether pets are allowed. A Seongsu-era visitor gathered that even the outdoor seats were off limits; the only claim that Hannam allows them comes from an overview post relaying the listing.
