Seonbiok

선비옥 Seonbi is the Joseon-era scholar-gentleman and ok means house, so the name reads roughly as 'the scholar's house'.

Compiled from 22 blog posts read in fullSources →

Seonbiok is a pork-rib and Korean-beef grill on the ground floor of 23 Jongno 16-gil in Gwansu-dong, between Jongno 3-ga and Jonggak stations. It made its name with street-side tables along the Tapgol Park stone wall in Nagwon-dong; since moving here it runs a large indoor hall plus a tented outdoor area behind the building. Posts give 20,000 won for 250 g of house-marinated pork ribs, 18,000 won for 200 g of pork belly and 43,000 won for a beef tartare and raw-beef plate, and ten posts that ate there confirm free dessert cold noodles with meat orders. Three posts mention an 8,000-won Korean lunch buffet, and one of them ate it. We read 30 posts dated 9 March to 4 October 2026; 23 of them record an actual visit.

When it opens
Daily11:00–24:0013 of 15 posts

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. The outdoor seating is not on the street but behind the building: 15 posts mention it, and several say you walk through the indoor hall and out a back door to reach it. Posts describe a tent, artificial turf and blankets; one warns that a singing class next door can be loud. A visitor on 31 July found the outdoor area closed because of the heat, another on 5 June said it was not really outdoor drinking, and one misses the old on-the-pavement feel.
  2. Thirteen posts call the indoor hall spacious; one mentions both four- and eight-seat tables, and two note storage for bags inside or under the chairs. A post about the old location said you sat almost elbow to elbow with the next table; we did not count it toward the current shop.
  3. Ordering is by tablet at each table, according to nine posts. One post says the lunch buffet is paid up front and water is self-serve.
  4. Four posts say staff grilled the meat for them and one says they grilled it themselves; one notes staff grill when it is not busy, so this may vary. Three posts mention staff swapping the grill plate between marinated and plain ribs.

  1. Ten posts say it is an easy walk from the subway, most often about five minutes from Exit 15 of Jongno 3-ga Station; others give five to eight minutes from Exit 4 of Jonggak Station.

Parking

Posts saying you can park6 of 22 posts

Many posts say the public Sejong lot behind the building gives one free hour. Six posts write as if they parked there, but five of them belong to the templated group, and one April post only says to use a nearby paid lot.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 4 (of 22 posts read)
Separate restrooms1 of 22 posts

On floors, all we have is four templated posts saying the sign hangs on the building's ground floor. Nobody mentions going downstairs or climbing steps.

Nobody says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in; that is unknown, not absent. A post about the guesthouse on the second floor notes there is no elevator, but that concerns the upper floor, not the restaurant. Note too that the outdoor area is reached through the hall and a back door.

One post says the toilets are separate for men and women and clean; nobody says whether they are inside the restaurant or outside.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 5 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The restaurant moved from behind Tapgol Park in Nagwon-dong to its current Gwansu-dong address. We cannot pin down when: one commentary post says July 2024 but is not a visit, and posts from 9 March 2026 onward already describe it as moved. A 27 March post describes a visit to the old site, so we left it out of the counts for the current shop.
  • Five posts from 30 April to 1 June 2026 follow one template: the same phrase repeated three times in the title, the same address and hours block, one free hour at Sejong parking, oak charcoal, beef striploin with pork ribs and the tartare plate in the same order, and no prices at all. We counted them because they describe a meal, but most of what we know about parking, the floor and the striploin comes from this group. One more post is disclosed advertising.
  • We could not count waits. One May post says they queued, but the timing of that visit is unclear, so we left it out. Others found it nearly empty on a Sunday and completely empty on a rainy day, and one says the outdoor seats fill quickly in the evening.
  • Fourteen posts list hours of 11:00 to midnight daily, mostly copied from map listings; one April post instead gives 11:00–23:00 Monday to Saturday and 13:00–23:00 on Sunday. Nobody says what hours the lunch buffet runs.
  • Prices vary slightly. Three May–June posts give 20,000 won for 250 g of marinated ribs while a 30 March post gives 18,000 won; salt-grilled neck is 18,000 won for 200 g in May and 20,000 won in June. We could not tell whether prices rose or posts recorded different items. No post gives a total for a meal. Two August posts mention soju and beer at 3,000 won for the 35th anniversary.
  • Fourteen posts give the phone number 02-764-2214. Group bookings appear only in copied listings and advice; no post says the writer actually booked.
