Tanghwa Kungfu Malatang Gongneung-jeom

탕화쿵푸마라탕 공릉점 Tanghwa Kungfu is the Korean reading of the Chinese 汤火功夫 on the sign — literally 'soup, fire, kung fu' — and malatang is the numbing-spicy Sichuan hot soup the chain sells.

A franchise malatang shop on the second floor of 203 Gongneung-ro, between Gongneung Station and Seoul National University of Science and Technology. You fill a bowl at the ingredient bar, weigh it, pay at a kiosk, and staff bring it to your table. Bowls in the posts cost ₩11,000 to ₩23,000, and nearly everyone added guobaorou (₩5,000 mini, ₩9,000–10,000 small, ₩16,000 large). Since a renewal in autumn 2026, beef, lamb and skewers are charged by weight like everything else. We read 30 posts dated 25 May to 12 October 2026: four were about other restaurants and one ate takeout at home, leaving 25 actual visits — 24 of them written between 10 September and 12 October 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Pick, weigh, pay at the kiosk. Eleven posts describe ordering through the scale and kiosk. One gives ₩2,100 per 100 g with a ₩7,000 minimum; several warn that you must enter your table number to have the food brought over, so check it first. One notes cash is taken separately at the counter.
  2. Guobaorou was ordered in 23 of the 25 visits, and fourteen posts call the coating crisp. Seven say even the small size was generous. Three found the pork thick; one found it thin.
  3. There is proper seating for solo diners. Eighteen posts describe the seats — single bar seats along the window or wall, plus two- and four-person tables. One mentions big windows across two walls. Thirteen call the room spacious and twenty-two call it clean.
  4. Heat is a split call. Four posts found it spicy (level 2 'definitely hotter than Shin Ramyun'), two found it mild ('level 1 really wasn't spicy'), and two didn't settle. One says level 0 is a plain white broth.

Parking

1 posts say you can park; 1 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park1 of 25 posts
Posts saying you cannot1 of 25 posts

Only two posts dealt with parking first-hand, and they disagree: one says parking was available, the other drove and says there is no lot of its own, so they used a car park up the road. Copied info blocks are split too (eight say no parking, two say yes), so we don't rely on them. Two posts suggest the nearby public car park.

Getting inside

Second floor14 of 25 posts

The shop is upstairs. Fourteen posts mention going up to the second floor, four of them by the stairs. No post mentions a lift.

We don't know about wheelchair or stroller access. Nobody mentioned a step at the door or a lift; four posts only say they took the stairs. That's an absence of reports, not a confirmed barrier.

No one described the toilet or where it is. Four posts copy a 'separate men's and women's toilets' line from the listing, which we don't count.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The pricing changed. The May 2026 post says nothing about meat; from 10 September posts report that meat, once an add-on, is now weighed with everything else. The entrance banner promised no extra charge for beef, lamb or skewers, but one diner watched the total climb when the beef went on the scale — there's no topping fee, but meat still counts by weight. Twelve posts call it cheap, though one pair paid in the ₩40,000s for xiangguo alone. Sichuan hotpot and tomato malatang were added around the same time.
  • No post mentions waiting for a table. Five say it was busy — a weekday at 7 p.m., other evenings, a holiday lunch — and several note a steady stream of delivery riders. That's no report, not proof of no wait.
  • It's a walk from Gongneung Station. Nine posts describe the walk, but their times vary — 3, under 5, 8, 9 and 10 minutes. Two give 491 m from exit 2.
  • Twenty-two posts give opening hours; twenty-one agree on 11:00–22:00 daily, last order 21:00. One lists 11:00–21:50 Monday–Saturday and 12:00–21:40 Sunday. Most copy the listing; one read it off the door.
  • More than ten posts give the phone number 02-975-0630. Nobody says whether it takes reservations; one post lists a different number, 0507-1414-0632.
  • Twenty-four of the 25 visits were posted within about a month of the renewal, and many walk through the renewal and review promotions in the same order; two share an identical string of twelve hashtags. None disclose sponsorship, and only one, from May 2026, says the author paid. Three took part in or saw the review event; two got a free drink from it.
