Sottam

솥탐 Sot means a large cooking pot — the one post under this name describes a big pot set beside the table that the stew is poured into; what tam means is not said.

Compiled from 12 blog posts read in fullSources →

A second-floor restaurant across from Hyundai Outlet near Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station. The sign now reads Sottam, and the single October 2026 post had braised chicken with aged kimchi simmered in a big pot beside the table. The twelve posts up to February 2026 were at the same address under the name Myeongdong Alssam Jjukkumi vs 38beonga Kimchi Jjigae, eating stir-fried octopus (32,000 won for two), pork-belly octopus (36,000 won for two) or army stew (20,000 won for two), with free mussel soup and perilla leaves for wrapping the octopus with flying-fish roe. We read 13 posts from October 2024 to October 2026, all of them actual visits.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Seven posts said the room is large, several noting enough tables for groups; two mentioned big windows looking out toward Hyundai Outlet.
  2. No post waited. Five said it was quiet when they arrived — a weekday afternoon, around 4 p.m. with one other table, and even at dinner time. We have no post from a busy hour.
  3. Two posts said staff fried the rice at the table for them. A third said a server stepped in only because they seemed to be struggling, so it's unclear whether staff do the cooking from the start.
  4. Three posts noted many foreign diners, hearing Chinese, Japanese and English. One saw foreign guests leave after a single order of ginseng chicken soup was refused; the writer only guessed it was a one-dish-per-person rule.

Getting inside

Second floor5 of 12 posts

It is upstairs. Five posts said it is on the second floor; two of them said you climb a staircase to the entrance, and one gave the way in as the door next to a self-photo studio.

No post said whether there is a lift or a step at the door. Two mention taking the stairs; that is not evidence there is no lift, only that nobody wrote about one.

Nobody wrote about the toilet — whether it is inside the restaurant or separated by sex. We don't know.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • The sign and menu changed. Through February 2026 the outside sign said octopus vs army stew; the October 2026 post walked in under a Sottam sign and ate braised chicken. Address, phone and side dishes are the same. With only one post under the new name, we don't know whether octopus is still served or how much of the older picture still holds.
  • Opinions on the food split. Two posts called it just average, one adding they'd try somewhere else next time; one post came back because they had liked it before.
  • Cleanliness splits one to one: one post found it neat and comfortable, another said their table hadn't been wiped properly and many tables were left uncleared.
  • One post described walking from Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station exit 14, about 200 m past a Tony Moly store. Other distance lines were copied from the listing. No post came by bus.
  • Three posts said who they came with — all with friends. None came with family, children or alone, so we can't say how it suits those.
  • Two posts list opening hours as daily from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m., but both copied it from a listing; nobody confirmed it, and only one of them is from after the name change.
  • Prices come from the octopus-restaurant era up to February 2026. The two-person octopus set was 52,000 won in October 2024 and 55,000 won in April 2025; nobody recorded the fried-rice price, and the Sottam chicken stew has no price on record.
  • Eight posts give the same phone number, 02-2275-9023, but none says whether reservations are taken.
