Ikseon Galmaegi

익선갈매기 Ikseon is the Ikseon-dong neighbourhood the alley belongs to; galmaegi here is short for galmaegisal, the pork skirt (diaphragm) cut — not the seagull the word also means.

Compiled from 28 blog posts read in fullSources →

Ikseon Galmaegi is a charcoal-grill pork house at the mouth of the galmaegisal alley behind exit 6 of Jongno 3-ga station. The signature is a whole pork skirt wound round a rib bone (170 g, 18,000 won); three mixed-cut sets all cost 53,000 won. You grill at your table, indoors on the ground floor, at street tables in the alley, or up a staircase on the roof. We read 30 posts from 9 August to 5 October 2026; 29 describe a visit, and one was about a different place the writer went on to afterwards.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. There is a rooftop. Six posts ate up there or described it. Table counts differ: four or five groups, about five tables, about eight. It is reached by a staircase inside or from the back door, and two posts warn that the steps are high and steep.
  2. Twelve posts say a Naver receipt review gets you one free side: jjagyechi noodles, kimchi stew or soybean stew, each normally 8,000 won. One adds it is once per table and the review must show a main dish; another notes cold noodles are excluded.
  3. Waiting depends on the hour. Three posts met a queue: a weekday Tuesday evening with a wait on arrival, a full house and a line by about 6 pm, and a general 'there's usually a wait'. The two that walked straight in came at 3–4 pm on a Saturday and around 4 pm. Nobody wrote down how many minutes they waited. Three others arrived at the 2 pm opening and found it quiet.
  4. Eight posts from August to late September found the indoor room properly cold, with a 'power cooling' sign at the door and fans running alongside the air conditioning; one party of seven chose seats right in front of the unit.
2 more
  1. Fourteen posts mention juiciness and nine say the meat is thick-cut. Several warn that the charcoal runs very hot, so you have to turn things often; one says the pork belly was done in under five minutes. Three posts specifically note no gamey smell.
  2. Eleven posts walked from exit 3 or 6 of Jongno 3-ga station, putting it at one to five minutes on foot. One says the alleys are confusing, another nearly went in the wrong side, and two point out there are doors front and back.

Three posts say in their own words that there is no parking; the 'no parking' line in most others is copied from the listing. The two posts that drove used the Jongmyo public car park and a paid lot in Insa-dong.

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

Accounts of the upper floor disagree. One post from 16 September 2026 says the second floor is the kitchen and all seating is downstairs; three October posts describe rooftop seating on the second floor. An 20 August post already mentions the rooftop, so we do not read this as a change. Four posts sat on the ground floor; none mention a basement.

No post says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or pushchair gets in; that means nobody wrote about it, not that it is a problem. No one mentions a lift, and the rooftop reads as stairs-only.

Two posts saw for themselves that the toilets are inside and split by gender, one adding they were clean. Several more repeat the line from the shop's listing, which we did not count.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Prices are steady from August to October: 18,000 won per single cut (beef 20,000), 53,000 per set, 8,000 for stews, noodles and jjagyechi. One post put the galmaegi set at about 58,000. Two posts give a whole bill: 64,000 won for two with a set, cold noodles, stew, rice and a drink, and 45,000 for two portions of skirt with a soju and a beer. One writer found it pricey, another called the sets reasonable.
  • Twenty-two posts give the same opening hours, daily 14:00–22:00 with last orders at 21:30, almost all copied from the listing. Three writers arrived right at the 2 pm opening, which bears that out. No post mentions a closing day.
  • Many posts list the same phone number, 0507-1336-7923. Three posts went with a reservation, one of them booking by phone and being seated on the roof.
  • The free cold side broth changed: posts up to 26 September 2026 describe dongchimi radish water-kimchi, posts from 2 October a muksabal of acorn jelly in cold broth. Whether it is seasonal we can't tell.
  • Of those who said who they came with, six came as a couple, two with friends, two with family (a mother, a teenage son), and one as a group of seven.
  • Most of these posts follow a promotional template: nine carry the identical 17 hashtags in the same order, twenty if you count reordered or extended versions, and four share an almost word-for-word directions paragraph. Three disclose sponsorship, one reads as partly comped, the rest say nothing; none says the writer paid their own way.
  • The registered address is 11 Donhwamun-ro 11ga-gil (floors 1–2), while every post gives 45 Supyo-ro 28-gil (Ikseon-dong 160-3). Posts mention doors on both sides, so these are likely two frontages of one building, but we could not confirm it.
