Sonogong Maratang Donggyodong-jeom

손오공마라탕 동교동점 Son Ogong is the Korean name of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King of Journey to the West (the shop's mascot is a little monkey called Ogong); malatang is the numbing-spicy Sichuan soup, and Donggyo-dong is the neighborhood of this branch.

A malatang shop on the second floor of the Olens building, a short walk from exit 8 of Hongik University Station. You fill a bowl with ingredients, it is weighed, you pick soup, dressed or stir-fried and a spice level from 0 to 3 in half steps, then collect it yourself when the buzzer goes. On the June 2026 menu the soup and its vegan version cost 2,200 won per 100 g (minimum 8,000 won), and a small guobaorou is 9,900 won. Many posts remember it for the vegetable-stock vegan soup and mushroom guobaorou. It closed for a remodel from April 1 to 25, 2026; posts after that describe the new room. We read 30 posts from October 2024 to October 2026; 2 were about other places, leaving 28 visits.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Eleven posts walked from Hongik University Station — one to five minutes from exit 8, by their counts. The big Olive Young diagonally across the street came up repeatedly as a landmark.
  2. Twelve posts called it clean, and what they pointed to was the ingredient case — full and unmixed even in the evening, restocked often. Two noted the pest-control certificate by the door.
  3. Six posts got a free bottled drink for writing a Naver receipt review, from March 2025 to June 2026. Three also mentioned peanut caramels and candy at the counter on the way out.
  4. Nine posts called the guobaorou crisp. On the small size, one found it enough for two and another said it was plenty; one post faulted it as a bit hard.

  1. Thirteen posts came from repeat visitors — once a month, four or five times, every three days, or since university.

Seven posts went up to the second floor, four of them mentioning stairs. One wrote that there is no elevator, so you take the stairs. Nobody described a basement.

Nobody wrote about a step at the door or getting in with a wheelchair or stroller. One post said the second floor is reached by stairs with no elevator.

Three posts said the restroom is outside the shop, up on the third floor — two from March 2025 and one from June 2026, after the remodel. Separate men's and women's restrooms appear only in copied info blocks, not in anyone's account.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Spice is chosen by level, but only one post found it hot (at level 3); five said it was milder than expected. Three said the same level 2 varies from visit to visit or has lost some of its numbing kick.
  • Opinions on space split three to three — roomy versus cramped, with tables too close — both before and after the remodel. One post found it hectic and noisy at a busy hour.
  • Three posts waited, all before the remodel: a late Sunday evening in January 2025 with four groups around them and a 20-minute wait for a table for three, and a weekday noon in April 2025 that sent one diner away until 12:30. In February 2026 a solo diner found a seat despite the crowd, and one regular said waits never exceeded five minutes. Nobody wrote about waiting after the remodel — that means unreported, not absent.
  • Companions: friends in five posts, alone in three, a partner in two, family or children in two. Several posts said solo diners are common and the many two-seat tables make eating alone easy.
  • Opening hours changed over time: posts through March 2025 say 11:00–23:00 daily, posts from April 2025 say 11:00–22:40, with last order at 21:50 throughout. 'No closing day' and 'no break' mostly come from copied info blocks. The shop closed April 1–25, 2026 for the remodel.
  • Prices have risen: soup went from 2,100 to 2,200 won per 100 g in early 2025, the stir-fry from 3,200 to 3,500 won per 100 g by June 2026, and the minimum from 7,000 to 8,000 won. Reported bills ran from 9,140 won for one to about 28,000 won for a stir-fry shared by two. Two posts found it pricey — one paid 10,000 won for a half-filled bowl — and two found it fair.
  • Twelve posts list the phone number 02-780-8686. Nobody wrote from experience about whether it takes reservations.
  • Between March 5 and 19, 2025 there is a cluster of two sponsored posts and one influencer-program post, plus a same-day post ending in the same checklist format. Read the praise from that stretch with that in mind.
