Pyeongando Sangwon Naengmyeon

평안도 상원냉면 Pyeongan-do Sangwon names Sangwon County in North Korea's Pyeongan Province; two posts say a refugee from there opened the original Sangwon-jip after the war, and this shop carries it on.

Pyeongando Sangwon Naengmyeon is a Pyongyang-style cold noodle shop tucked into a largely shuttered basement food court in the LG Palace building by Hongik Univ. Station exit 9. Plain cold noodles are 11,000 won (large 14,000), noodles of 100% domestic buckwheat 19,000 won, with boiled pork and beef on the side; you order at a kiosk, collect your tray when your number is called and return it yourself. Weekday dinner service began on 10 June 2026, but a 30 September post says it went back to lunch only from 1 September for winter. One post says the shop closed in August 2024 over a planned building sale and reopened in the same spot that December. We read 30 posts from December 2024 to October 2026; 27 describe an actual visit (one was about another shop, two were recommendations or ranking lists).

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. Ordering is by kiosk, as fifteen posts note. You pay, get a number, fetch your tray when it is called, and clear your own leftovers and dishes at the return counter. One visitor was taken aback at having to scrape plates like in a school cafeteria.
  2. Twelve posts call it cheap, two call it expensive, and one is split. The cheap side compares the 11,000-won cold noodles with other Pyongyang noodle houses; the split post balked at 19,000 won for the all-buckwheat bowl. Boiled pork is 25,000 won a plate, 13,000 a half plate.
  3. Three posts say the boiled pork has no gamey smell and two note its thick slices. Several solo diners added a half plate for 13,000 won.

Getting inside

In a basement15 of 24 posts
Lift to the floor1 of 24 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 24 posts

Fifteen posts place it on basement level 1. Twelve say to come in from the subway's exit 9 (one says exit 8), climb one flight from the B2 arcade and look for the old 'food department store' sign. Several admit wondering whether they were in the right place; the counter sits at the far left of the food court.

No post says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. One mentions taking stairs or a lift up from the B2 arcade. We don't know, which is not the same as no.

One post says the building has separate men's and women's toilets; none says where they are relative to the shop.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Waiting is mixed: one post saw a queue form soon after sitting down at 11:10, two found plenty of room (one on a Saturday at 11:30), and one is unclear. Selling out comes up more than queues — five posts found the all-buckwheat noodles already gone.
  • Opening hours depend on when you go. Two 2025 posts and one from 1 June 2026 list only Monday–Saturday 11:00–15:00 (last order 14:30); three posts say dinner service started on 10 June 2026. Later posts give weekdays 11:00–21:00 with a 15:00–17:00 break and 20:30 last order, Saturdays lunch only — many of these are copied info blocks. A 30 September 2026 post says it went back to lunch only from 1 September. Check before going in the evening. Every post agrees it is closed on Sundays.
  • Prices have gone up: a June 2025 post lists 10,000 won for plain or spicy cold noodles and 18,000 for the all-buckwheat bowl (recalling 8,000 won before that); 2026 posts give 11,000 and 19,000.
  • Alcohol varies by date: posts from December 2024 and June 2026 say the shop had stopped selling it, while an August 2026 menu lists soju and beer at 5,000 won and an October post confirms drinks are sold.
  • An August 2026 post relays the owner saying the shop plans to leave the food court for a street-front space around the end of next year. That is hearsay; no post yet reports a move.
  • Three posts went alone, two with friends, one with a partner. None went with family or children.
  • Seven posts copy the phone number 02-332-8935 from info blocks. Only one block mentions group bookings and reservations; no one reports booking. One August 2026 post is a templated piece with leftover widgets, and we did not count its details.
