Gimjangdok

김장독 A gimjangdok is the earthenware crock that kimchi is kept in after gimjang, the autumn kimchi-making — fitting for a house whose menu is built around kimchi dishes.

Compiled from 12 blog posts read in fullSources →

Gimjangdok sits right outside Exit 8 of Hongik Univ. Station, on the ground floor of 9 Yanghwa-ro 18-gil, and is built around kimchi: kimchi-jjim, kimchi stew and kimchi budae-jjigae, all simmered at the table. Posts put kimchi stew at 11,000 won a person and kimchi-jjim at 22,000 won for two, and four posts got a free steamed egg on the side. We read 23 posts from 15 September 2025 to 20 October 2026; 14 are about this restaurant and all 14 are first-hand visits. The other nine are about the hotpot place upstairs and a waffle stand next door, and we did not count them.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Room is the most consistent note: eight posts called it large or said there were plenty of seats, and none disagreed. One said the tables are spaced far enough apart not to feel cramped; another thought it could take a group.
  2. Three posts saw many foreign diners. One was bothered by a loud tourist family at the next table, and two posts in all said the room is not quiet, one calling evenings boisterous.
  3. Heat splits three to one: three posts found the dishes sharp or spicy, while one budae-jjigae post found it mild.
  4. Three posts found the portions large, including one solo diner; none said they were small.

Getting inside

None of the posts about this restaurant mentioned the floor on the way in; the 'ground floor' in the address is the registered listing.

We don't know about steps at the entrance or wheelchair and stroller access. That doesn't mean there's a problem; nobody wrote about it.

We don't know where the restroom is or whether it's split by gender. The only restroom notes in our posts are about the hotpot place upstairs.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Waits split one to one: one post queued briefly at a full house around 10 p.m., another said there is never a wait because there are so many seats. A lunch post noted crowds but no wait. No one gave a wait time.
  • Most posts found it inexpensive: four said so outright. One post panned the kimchi-jjim and omelette and rated value poorly. Budae-jjigae was 22,000 won for two in a February 2026 post and 12,000 won in April and August 2026 posts; we cannot tell whether it went up.
  • Five posts agree it's an easy walk from Exit 8 of Hongik Univ. Station. Nobody described getting there by bus.
  • Company is thinly reported: two solo visits, one with a friend, one with a sibling. The rest just say 'we'.
  • Seven posts give the same hours, 10:30 a.m. to midnight daily, and six of them give last orders at 11 p.m. Three of these were copied from the map listing. Two posts say it is open every day.
  • Three posts list the phone number 02-333-6301, all copied from the listing. Nobody said whether the restaurant takes reservations.
  • Posts disagree on rice: one says you order it separately, another says a bowl comes with the stew. The '100% Jeolla kimchi' and '100% Jeju pork' lines are the restaurant's own signage, which posts repeated, and we did not count them.
