Soup and riceKorean

Mugyodong Bugeoguk-jip

무교동북어국집 Mugyo-dong is the downtown neighbourhood the shop started in before redevelopment moved it to Da-dong; bugeo-guk is dried-pollack soup and jip means house.

Compiled from 16 blog posts read in fullSources →

A one-dish shop in a Da-dong alley off Euljiro 1-gil, serving dried-pollack soup since 1968. Nobody takes your order: soup and rice arrive per head, and you help yourself to kimchi, pickled cucumber and chive salad from tubs on the table. Ten visit posts put a bowl at 11,000 won. We read 30 posts dated 17 June to 17 October 2026; three were about other shops, and 16 describe an actual meal here.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. There is a line even at breakfast. Twelve of the 16 visitors queued, and the waits they wrote down were 20, 20, 30, 30 and 35 minutes; the 35-minute post counted 62 people ahead at 11:30. One visitor found more than five groups waiting at 8 a.m. on a weekday, and another arrived second at 6:40 and says the room was full by 7. Two posts say the evening line was shorter.
  2. Thirteen posts say you can ask for more broth, fish and rice, and several add that it costs nothing extra. One visitor says a server offered more before being asked; another says even the refill bowl was large.
  3. The kitchen by the entrance is in plain view: three posts describe watching a huge pot of soup simmering and eggs being stirred in while they waited.
  4. Five posts call the staff friendly, one noting that they stayed kind even when the place was packed.

The prices here are what bloggers wrote down in their posts, and they may have changed since. Check Naver Place for the current menu and prices. This list is not a menu board — it counts what bloggers actually ordered and ate. Check on Naver Place

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 16 posts read)
Toilet inside1 of 16 posts

Only one post mentions the floor, saying the dining room is all on the ground level. Another notes that the toilet is upstairs on the second floor.

We don't know whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller can get in. No post mentions it either way.

One post says the toilet is inside, on the second floor. The claim of separate men's and women's toilets appears only in posts copying Naver's listing, so we didn't count it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 27 posts we gathered, 11 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

2026-10-142 posts in one day
2026-10-082 posts in one day

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices differ slightly between posts. Ten give 11,000 won for the soup and one gives 10,000 won. Seven put the fried egg at 500 won and two at 1,000 won, and four say the eggs run out early.
  • Thirteen posts agree on opening hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at weekends. The closing day is unclear. One post repeats hearsay that it closes on Sundays, and a post from 10 October says it is closed on Mondays 'for the time being'. Check before you go.
  • Only one post describes the walk from the station, about five minutes from exit 4 of City Hall station. No one wrote about coming by bus.
  • Visitors' company is too varied to sum up: two went with family (one with a seven-year-old daughter, for breakfast), one with a boyfriend and one with a friend.
  • Five visit posts list the phone number 02-777-3891. No one wrote about making a reservation; everyone queued outside.
