Yuktongnyeong Myeongdong

육통령 명동본점 Aged Jeju black pork, grilled for you at your table, on a Myeongdong back street

Data as of · Published ·

Three minutes on foot from Myeongdong station, down a side street, a tiled-roof building given over entirely to one grill house across three floors. Jeju black pork is aged a fortnight in omija berry and cooked over charcoal — and you never pick up the tongs. Staff work the tables, turning the meat, cutting it and laying it on your plate. The meal closes with a soybean stew or cold noodles.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. What people actually come for is not the pork but the person cooking it. Staff take the thick cuts from raw to done, slice them to eating size, name the part they are handing you and set it on your plate; order two cuts and they come back on separate dishes so you can tell them apart. What the writers keep returning to is not the flavour but that nobody has to break off the conversation to watch the grill.
  2. Evenings and weekends mean a wait. One writer queued twenty minutes at two on a Saturday afternoon; another put their name in remotely at 6:46 and sat down at 7:19. There is a check-in terminal at the door that you can use from elsewhere, and several people simply ran errands nearby until they were called.
  3. Meat can be ordered one portion at a time. The usual two-portion minimum does not apply here, and one writer used that to order belly, neck and plain belly side by side and compare them.
  4. What the fortnight of ageing seems to do is take the pig smell out. The writers who ate the first piece bare, with nothing on it, all said there was no gaminess — and although six dips arrive with the meat, including omija syrup, salted hairtail guts and wine salt, several of them recommend the first bite plain.

Getting inside

Second floor15 of 25 posts
Toilet inside3 of 25 posts
Separate restrooms2 of 25 posts

All three floors belong to the same place, but the upper two carry a different sign: the owners also run a beef-offal house called Eunseong Yanggopchang, and more than one writer was surprised to find that name on the receipt after being seated upstairs. Either menu can be ordered from any floor. The ground floor is mostly four-tops; the tables get bigger as you go up.

Not one writer mentions a step or a stair. Nobody says whether there is a lip at the door, whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in, or whether the only way to the upper floors is the staircase. Several people were seated on the second floor and none of them describes how they got up there.

Only two writers looked at the toilets themselves. One reports separate men's and women's rooms inside, each barely big enough for one person but with a basin and mirror; the other says men use the second and third floors while women can use any. The phrase "separate toilets" appears in several other posts, but always inside a copied list of amenities, so it is not counted here.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • The walk from the subway is well covered, though the exit number is not. Almost every post sends you out exit 5 of Myeongdong station on line 4 and about 200 metres toward the Shinsegae department store; one says exit 6, three to five minutes. The place sits two turns into a side street, so the directions run long — and five posts give those long directions word for word identically, which means they came from one source.
  • Some posts declare that they were paid. Five of those read as five different people — a date, a wedding-invitation dinner, two family meals, a work outing — but they give the same directions, order the same things (one bone-in slab, raw beef, cold noodles, soybean stew) and follow the same running order, and not one of them quotes a price. One still carries the line "the fifth photo they sent me separately." They describe eating, so they are counted, but what those five say should not be read as five people saying it.
  • How roomy it feels seems to depend on where you are put. Several writers found the tables generously spaced; one who was seated upstairs said the second floor on its own is not large. Each floor is effectively a different room, so there is no single answer.
  • Book through Naver and write a review and the stew is free. That is worth knowing when you read how often people praise the soybean stew here: some paid the 8,000 won for it and some were given it, and most posts do not say which.
