Yeongnam Jeil Makchang

영남제일막창 Yeongnam is the southeastern region around Daegu, jeil means 'number one' and makchang is grilled pork large intestine, so the name reads 'Yeongnam's best makchang'; the house serves Daegu-style pork makchang.

A Daegu-style charcoal pork makchang house on a side street in Bukchang-dong, near City Hall Station, occupying the first and second floors of 16-7 Sejong-daero 18-gil. Makchang is 18,000 won a serving; it comes par-grilled from the kitchen and staff finish it on the table's charcoal grill. You dip it in makjang with scallion and chili. Pork belly is 20,000 won, beef makchang 22,000 won, and there are sides such as hot pot, fried rice and an egg gratin, plus a lunch menu. We read 27 posts dated September 20 to October 20, 2026. We set aside one, a list of other restaurants; the remaining 26 all describe eating here.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Guests don't grill here. Twenty-five of 26 posts said staff did all the grilling at the table, and 17 said the makchang arrives already par-grilled from the kitchen. Several posts said finished pieces are moved to a side dish or tray to stay warm, and many said staff explain the eating order as they grill — salt first, then makjang.
  2. Sixteen posts said the makchang had no off smell; one wrote that their mother, normally put off by offal, was surprised by it. No post said otherwise.
  3. More than ten posts copied the corkage notice: two bottles free, excluding drinks sold in-house. Only one post actually brought a bottle (white wine). Two posts said each bottle beyond two costs 20,000 won, and a late-September post called the policy a current promotion, so it may change.

Separate restrooms6 of 26 posts

Nineteen posts described a two-floor restaurant, with the second floor used for groups and buyouts and four- and eight-seat booths. The seat count is split: 13 posts say 60 seats in total, three say 70 (30 downstairs, 40 upstairs) — both figures are copied from the restaurant's own notices. Three posts said they sat on the first floor; none mentioned a basement.

No post described the entrance step or getting in with a wheelchair or stroller; the 'wheelchair accessible' line in one post is copied from the listing. One post mentioned climbing stairs to the second floor, and none mentioned an elevator. This means we don't know, not that there isn't one.

Five posts said the restroom is inside the restaurant. Six said there are separate men's and women's rooms, and two of those explained the split is by floor — women's on the first, men's on the second. One post found a single stall behind the seats. Men may need to go upstairs.

No one mentioned: Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Nineteen posts said it's close to the station, most citing two to three minutes from City Hall Station exit 7. Two posts named exit 8 instead — one of them called it a ten-minute walk — and one named exit 1.
  • One post actually queued — arriving right after work, they found a line, put their name down and went for a walk. Two others only reported hearing of lines or said waits clear quickly. Three posts mentioned waiting chairs outside. Eight booked ahead, and one found the first floor full at 5:30 on a Saturday. One post said the food was slow (the side dishes were taken back and swapped); four said it came quickly.
  • Of the posts that said who they came with: three came as a couple, two with family (one with children), two as a work group, one with friends. Nearly every post pitches it for company dinners, but only two describe actually going as one.
  • Twenty posts gave hours, all 11:30 to 23:30 daily. Twelve said the 14:30–16:30 break is weekdays only, while seven listed the break with no days given; one post had the break ending at 16:00. Twelve gave last order as 22:30. Most of this is copied from the restaurant's notice.
  • Prices don't vary between posts. For a meal for two, one post paid 70,000 won at lunch for two servings of makchang (36,000), a two-person intestine hot pot (22,000) and two kettles of makgeolli (12,000); another ordered 64,000 won worth of makchang, pork belly, makgeolli and a soda. Eight posts mentioned the review event, which gets you a tasting plate of yukhoe, naengmyeon or an ade.
  • The phone number is 0507-1440-7988 (a forwarding number). Bookings go through Naver and Catch Table, and many posts noted that group and buyout bookings are handled by phone.
  • All 26 posts appeared within one month and repeat the same points in nearly the same order: company dinners near City Hall, four- and eight-seat booths, buyouts, two free corkage bottles, the public lot by the Westin Chosun. Two posts disclosed sponsorship or free product, one said it was a review-program visit, three showed receipts, and the other 20 said nothing either way. The claim that it opened in June 2026 is hearsay in one post.
