Chinese

Hwasang Sonmandu

화상손만두 Hwasang means an overseas Chinese merchant and son-mandu means hand-made dumplings — posts describe the dumplings being folded by hand in the shop.

Compiled from 20 blog posts read in fullSources →

Hwasang Sonmandu is a Chinese dumpling house down a side street near Nakseongdae Station (Namsunhwan-ro 244-gil 18, red signboard). Steamed pork or kimchi dumplings and fried dumplings are 8,000 won, the mixed platter 13,000, fried eggplant 20,000, and rice dishes such as mapo tofu, jjamppong and japchae 9,000; there is no jajangmyeon or noodle jjamppong. Posts describe it as a lunch spot for rice and dumplings and an evening spot for fried dishes with beer or baijiu. We read 30 posts dated 26 July to 17 October 2026; 22 record an actual meal, and 2 were about other restaurants and set aside. Posts copying TV-show listings say it was near Ewha Womans University when featured in 2016–2017 and has since moved here.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Frying is what the place is known for. Thirteen posts called the food crisp — fried dumplings that shatter, eggplant that stays crunchy under its sauce. Fried eggplant was ordered in 12 of the 22 meal posts, more than any other dish, and one group ordered it twice. One post found the fried dumplings merely so-so.
  2. Expect to wait in the evening. Seven posts say they queued: about 10 minutes behind two groups at 7:15 on a weekday, under 30 minutes at 7 on a Friday, second in line on a Saturday evening, and one 8 pm arrival that waited and then hit last orders. One post walked straight in at weekday lunch; another says weekday lunch fills by noon, so they arrive around 11:50. One post describes writing name and number on a list and sitting on chairs out front.
  3. Nine posts mention heat. The kimchi dumplings were spicy enough that one child managed only one; the eggplant was described as milder than Shin Ramyun. One post said the spicy dumpling soup is only Shin Ramyun-level, so heat-seekers may be disappointed.
  4. You order by scanning the QR code on the table. Four posts say so; one tried to order aloud and was asked to use the QR code instead. One post notes paying on the way out.
2 more
  1. The room is small: five posts said so, one noting tables set close together. Two posts disagree on size — about four to six tables versus nine four-seat tables.
  2. Six posts come from repeat visitors — one back within a week, one who has been five-plus times, one bringing a friend from abroad. A July post liked the food but found the service curt and was unsure about returning.

Parking

1 posts say you can park. None say you cannot.

Posts saying you can park1 of 20 posts

Parking is contested. One post says one or two cars can stop out front only if no one else is there; copied listings say no parking in three posts and front-of-shop parking in one. A family used the Haengun-dong No. 1 public lot — 1,200 won for 1 hour 24 minutes with an EV discount — and walked about 10 minutes.

Getting inside

Toilet inside2 of 20 posts

No post says whether there is a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller fits. That means unknown, not absent. One post notes the shop is on the ground floor with homes above.

Two posts say the toilet is inside the shop (one didn't use it). No one mentioned whether it is separated by gender or how big it is.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 26 posts we gathered, 6 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Four posts got extra side dishes, but how differs by date: a July post had to ask staff because there was no self-service bar, while three posts from late August on describe a self-service bar. We can't tell whether this changed or the July post was the exception.
  • Only one post describes walking in from the station; the frequently quoted 2–3 minutes from Nakseongdae Station exit 3 is copied from listings.
  • Company varies: two posts came as a group, one as a family with children, one with a friend from abroad. No post describes eating alone.
  • Ten posts give the same hours — 11:30 to 21:30, break 15:00–17:00, last order 20:30 — mostly copied from listings. Most say closed Sundays; two add the first Monday of each month. Posts claiming a 17:00 opening or a 22:30 close appear to mix in other shops' data and were not used.
  • Prices in posts all match the menu updated on 1 June 2026. A family of four paid 73,000 won for the mixed dumplings, fried pork, chili prawns and a soda — not cheap, they said, but fair. Two posts called it inexpensive.
  • Many posts give the same phone number, 02-3285-8842. Reservations and takeaway appear only in copied listings; no post describes booking ahead, though two saw customers collecting takeaway.
  • The move from near Ewha Womans University appears only in three posts copying TV-show listings, with no date. Separately, one post reports a 'Jeongja direct branch' opening in Bundang on 5 October 2026 — a second shop, not a move of this one.
