Mokhwajang Ssangchon-jeom
목화장 쌍촌점 Mokhwajang means cotton-flower house; the room is done up like an old Korean parlour.
Data as of · Published ·
Mokhwajang is a Korean drinking house on the second floor of a building in the eating lane outside Uncheon station, in Gwangju's Ssangchon-dong. It is registered simply as Mokhwajang; the sign and the customers add the neighbourhood. It opens at half past six in the evening, closes at four in the morning, and never shuts for a day — most of these posts arrive here as the second or third stop of a night. Dim light and old furnishings lead four writers to the same phrase: it feels like the late-night diner from the drama. Boiled pork and a raw-beef kimbap carry the menu, and the kimbap is made five a day. Each table must order one main dish. The posts we read run from December 2024 to September 2026.

What sets it apart
- A bowl of crackers arrives free before you order anything — nine posts mention it, and no two call it the same thing: macaroni crisps, puffed macaroni, "old-fashioned snacks", "human kibble". One writer finds them quietly addictive; a September 2026 one found them gone soft. The water is hovenia tea, say two, one of whom likes that the cure arrives with the cause. Four describe what is laid out at each seat: individually wrapped wooden chopsticks, wet wipes, tissues, a bottle opener, and a call button — which one writer, tired of shouting across dark rooms, counts as a real virtue.
- Every table has to order one main. Three posts state the rule. What counts as a main is a twenty-thousand-won plate — the boiled pork, the chicken hotpot, the stir-fried pork and kimchi — while the ₩5,000 noodles and the ₩4,000 ramen ride on top of it. So a table of two starts at twenty-odd thousand won, which is the number to know if you were planning to drop in for a light second round. One writer, already fed elsewhere, ordered the cheap noodles and a main anyway, on the grounds that drinking hollows you out. Another notes that nothing is pre-made: it is all cooked to order.
- A photo or video review on Naver gets you a plate of chips. Five writers claimed it and all five were pleased; one says it lands like a second main. A hash brown comes on top, and chilli sauce instead of ketchup. Booking through Naver adds a cola voucher, say two. One describes a gachapon machine by the till: write the review, take a turn, and whatever comes out is yours next visit. A September 2026 writer declined the whole business as more trouble than it was worth — so not everyone collects.

Parking
12 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

There is no car park. Twelve posts say so and none says otherwise. The suggestions are kerbside in the lane (four), a public or private garage nearby (five), and a council car park five minutes' walk away (one). On how hard it is they disagree: two call parking near the door effectively impossible, while one reckons the lane is fine except at weekends. Not one writer says where they actually left a car. Twelve posts advise about parking and none describes doing it; what they describe instead is drinking until the small hours and taking a taxi home.

Getting there

Getting inside

Second floor, up a steep stair. Fourteen posts place it there and six single out the climb: narrow, steep, and — in a room that serves until four in the morning — a thing to respect on the way down. Six writers say some version of "mind the stairs if you plan to drink". No post mentions a lift, either way. The sign at street level is easy to miss. Five describe hunting for it: assuming it was at ground level, looking up, almost walking past. What everyone navigates by is the chicken franchise on the ground floor, which appears in fourteen posts.
Nobody writes about whether someone who cannot climb stairs could get in. The words do not appear in any of the twenty-eight posts, and no one brought a pushchair. What we know stops at the stair: second floor, narrow, steep, and not one mention of a lift. Nothing about the width of the door, or a step at the toilet. Dogs, on the other hand, have been. A December 2025 writer brought two, was warmly received, and — on a full Friday — sat at the standing bar, asking the neighbouring table's indulgence first. She adds that whether dogs are allowed depends on the night and you should ring ahead. Three other posts carry "pets welcome" in a copied header, but hers is the only one that actually brought one.
The toilet is inside — five posts say so, two of them counting it as compensation for the stairs. It is shared between men and women, say two; one adds, with feeling, that you should knock. One also notes a smoking room beside it, so you need not go down to the street. The other twenty-three are silent. How many cubicles, whether there is a step, whether you leave the room to reach it — no one says, so neither can we.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know
- You walk from Uncheon station. Four posts give directions and no two are identical: three minutes from exit 2; close enough to be easy; at the head of the eating lane by exit 2; and the fullest of them — out of exit 2, toward the reservoir, in between the bakery and the pharmacy on your left, then the second floor above the chicken shop. All four agree on exit 2. No post mentions a bus. And nobody says how you get home at two or three in the morning from a place that stays open past the last train; two mention taking a taxi, neither says how easily one came.
- It is not a queueing place, but it does fill. Nobody in the twenty-eight posts actually waited. Five say they walked in; the two that mention waiting at all were told on the phone to register first (January 2026), and found the room nearly full (August 2025). What the posts describe is avoidance: booking ahead and reckoning thirty minutes later would have meant a wait; arriving at opening; walking in at twenty to eight on a Saturday; finding one bar seat left after everywhere else had filled. You can book — seven did, through Naver. One notes same-day booking is weekdays only; another that the slots offered were half past six and seven. One was told waiting lists are taken by phone. Three say it fills as the night goes on, and one arrived at one in the morning to find a single table occupied.
- The posts cannot agree whether it is roomy. Three say it is: more tables than expected, all seating four or more; comfortable gaps between them. Two say it is not: a small room fitted out efficiently; not many seats. Posts written in the same month disagree, and since nobody counted the seats we cannot settle it. On the kinds of seating they do agree: there is a bar counter and there are tables (thirteen posts), taking parties of one, two, four or six, with tables pushed together for larger groups. Two chose a window seat, four mention the group table at the back. Nine call the lighting dim — one warns it is darker than the photographs and you cannot quite see your food, having dragged the lamp closer and pushed it back again.
- Not one post discloses sponsorship. Ten insist they paid; the other eighteen say nothing, which means they did not say. Five of the twenty-eight are diaries that tour several places in a night. The check-in is ours and the visit is real, but our shop gets a line — "and then the second round" — so we counted nothing from them. They stay in the denominator all the same: a visit written thinly is still a visit. Two posts went up on 17 June 2026, both ordering the prawns and the shaved ice. Their prose and their verdicts differ, so we kept both. There is almost nothing about summer. The posts run evenly from December 2024 to September 2026, yet only two mention the window seats, and both of those are from June and July. What a second-floor room open until four is like on a summer night, beyond those two, nobody has written down.
