Ttungttanji

뚱딴지 Ttungttanji is a Korean word for something absurd or out of the blue, as in an off-the-wall remark; it is also a folk name for the Jerusalem artichoke.

A charcoal black-pork house in a yellow timber building at 17 Buryongsu-gil, Aewol, set back up a lane from the Aewol coastal road. Thick-cut black pork comes at 66,000 won per 600 g geun (33,000 won per extra half), and the staff grill it for you from start to finish. Soy and spicy marinated crab come as standard sides, and many diners added the Jeju sea doenjang stew with live abalone and shrimp (15,000 won). The pork-and-seafood platter with abalone, tiger prawns and sausage is 84,000 won. One couple paid 86,000 won for a geun of pork, the stew and an extra abalone; a group of three spent about 200,000 won. We read 30 posts dated 17 August to 27 October 2026; 2 were about a nearby resort and were set aside, leaving 28 actual visits.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The staff do the grilling — 22 of the 28 visits say so. One diner asked why the server shook the thick slabs in the tongs and was told it sheds fat and takes on charcoal smoke; several describe the rind being cut off and grilled separately, and finished pieces stacked on a stone slab beside the grill so they don't burn. One post warns the thick cuts take a long time to cook and you need patience.
  2. Waits depend on timing. Four posts waited or saw a queue — about 20 minutes after registering on CatchTable, three parties ahead in the waiting area, being the last table seated before a line formed, and booking in a hurry because of a queue. One post found it quiet. Three posts recommend booking ahead.
  3. Ten posts mention a wall crowded with celebrity autographs; seven saw the certified-seller notice by the aging fridge at the entrance and checked the pork's origin.
  4. Six posts mention high chairs and six saw outdoor terrace tables by the entrance. Claims that pets are allowed were hearsay or copied listings, so we didn't count them.

Getting inside

Second floor2 of 28 posts
Step at the entrance5 of 28 posts

No post says the restaurant is below ground. Two mention a second floor, one adding it seemed to be for groups only, and one notes the hall sits a little below the entrance.

There are steps on the way in. Five posts describe climbing the rainbow-painted stairs to the entrance. One adds that there's a level change between the entrance and the dining room — mind the step — and that the hall sits slightly lower; another also says they went down to the tables.

No one wrote about getting in with a wheelchair or stroller — that means nobody said, not that it can't be done. Five posts mention steps. One post copied a listing line saying seating is wheelchair-accessible; that's the restaurant's own entry, so we didn't rely on it.

No one described the toilets from experience. The only mention is one post's copied listing saying they're separated by gender.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Refills are mixed. Four posts topped up sides at the self-serve bar or got more scallion salad. The crab is different: one post says no refills because it's sold separately, while two say you can add more without saying whether it costs extra.
  • No one came by bus. Twelve posts drove, and two walked from nearby lodging — one, a 10-minute walk from the Shinhyup Jeju resort, warns that you walk along a road shared with cars.
  • Opening hours come only from copied info blocks and vary over time. Of 20 posts that give them, 10 say 11:00–22:00, 5 say 11:00–23:00 and 5 say 12:00–23:00. All 8 posts from 6 October 2026 on say 11:00–22:00 with last order at 21:30; earlier posts are split three ways (two late-August posts also say 11–22). We can't tell whether the hours changed, so check before you go. One post lists no closing day.
  • Prices: 66,000 won for a geun of pork is consistent across posts. Nobody gave the kimchi stew's price. One post found the Hallasan bulgogi on the pricey side.
  • Many posts list the same phone number, 0507-1370-2085. Diners booked through CatchTable or Naver reservations.
  • Some blogs posted repeatedly: four posts from one, three from another, two each from two more. The three from the same couple all describe a 'first day of the trip' order of one geun, the stew and an extra abalone, so we can't tell whether it's one meal written up three times. Two posts disclose sponsorship or collaboration, three say they paid their own way, and the other 23 don't say. One diner wrote that the place was a big letdown but didn't say why.
