Sushisang

스시상 A one-man Japanese kitchen in a Uiwang side street, known across the county for a futomaki roll cut into eight pieces the size of a fist.

Data as of · Published ·

Sushisang is a Japanese restaurant on the ground floor of a commercial block in Naeson-dong, Uiwang, about ten minutes' walk from Kaywon University of Art and Design. It faces away from the main road, towards the apartment blocks, across from the Lotte Mart. The menu runs through nigiri, scattered sushi, rice bowls, udon, soba and a spicy fish-roe soup — but people come here for one thing, the futomaki: a fat sushi roll cut into eight, each piece the size of a grown adult's fist. Open 11:30, closed 14:30 to 17:00, shut at 20:30, closed Sundays. There are only about ten tables, and they fill fast at mealtimes. One man runs the kitchen and the room; a writer puts him here well over ten years. The posts we read span September 2025 to September 2026. Of the thirty posts matched to this address we counted twenty-six: one was about a different sushi shop across the way, one carried only another restaurant's check-in, and two were month-long personal diaries in which this place appears once, as a box of futomaki somebody else brought home.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. One piece of this roll is the size of a fist, and not knowing that is how people over-order. A sign on the wall says swallowing a piece whole brings luck; almost nobody manages it — one writer reports even her husband, who is over 100kg, gave up, and several take each piece apart and eat it with a spoon. The same sign offers the workaround: pull out some of the rolled omelette to make the piece smaller, which two writers did. The two end pieces are bigger again, with whole slabs of fish in them. Two say four pieces filled them; several say two people finishing the eight-piece set always feels like overeating. A first visit is better served by the weekday lunch (four pieces and udon) or a single roll — everyone who added the scattered sushi on top of a set says it was too much.
  2. With around ten tables, the answer at mealtimes is to be there when the door opens. Thirteen writers found the room full or a queue outside, and six deliberately arrived at opening — one got there at 11:30 sharp and people were already inside; another says the wait starts at 11:50. A takeaway order phoned in at six on a Friday evening was told to come back in thirty minutes. The wait is not long, though: three writers note this is not a drinking place, so tables turn over and food comes out fast. Only one found no queue at all, before seven on a Wednesday, and even she says the seats were nearly all taken. Tables cannot be booked — one writer asked and was told so.
  3. It is a small room. Eight writers say so; one found it roomier than expected. Four counted the seats and none quite agree: four twos and four fours plus a bar; seven or eight tables; eight to ten; four tables of four plus three bar seats. Six writers note the counter would suit eating alone — and not one of the twenty-six actually came alone. A regular puts it flatly: there is a counter, but she has never seen anyone sitting at it. Several describe an ordinary neighbourhood Japanese room with a lot of wood in it, and four call it cosy. One noticed a large dried fish skeleton hanging from the ceiling; the walls carry the origin-of-ingredients board and the instructions for eating the roll.
  4. Nine writers call it cheap and one says it has got dear. Both are right — the prices went up in the summer of 2026. The roll was ₩20,000 in five posts between October 2025 and June 2026 and ₩22,000 in a September 2026 one; the two-person set went from ₩35,000 to ₩38,000, and the scattered sushi from ₩18,000 to ₩20,000. A customer of seven years writes that it used to be cheaper and wonders aloud what has happened to prices. The cheapest way in is the weekday lunch: ₩12,000 for the nigiri set, ₩14,000 for the roll set, neither available at weekends or holidays and, according to one writer, not for takeaway. Four writers say local vouchers and subsidy cards are accepted, but each names a different scheme. We have not checked which of them still work.
  5. The table is laid before you order. Nine writers describe small plates, a soy dish, a cup, wet wipes, soy sauce, pickled shallots and ginger already waiting, with hot soup and pickled radish and chilli brought over once you order. One notes the radish is flavoured with citron; another was won over by the size of the shallots. The soup is not the usual thing: served in a cup to drink, and tasting strongly of soybean paste rather than the thin broth one writer expected. Water is self-service, cold from a fridge and hot by the door. Takeaway orders get tea instead of the soup — a frequent takeaway customer describes gulping it expecting broth, being startled, and wishing they would put the soup in the bag.
  6. One man cooks and runs the room. Five writers call him kind, and one was genuinely moved: watching him track the floor, sequence the orders and send the food out, she writes, is the first properly professional owner she has seen in a while. One had heard he has been here well over ten years. Others record him explaining how to wrap the sashimi, bringing more rice for a salmon bowl when asked, and quietly giving a bowl of udon to everyone at a table that had ordered a set for two. One writer, though, rates the service 'so-so' — we leave that standing. Another writes her review precisely because he does not seem to do any marketing.
  7. A lot of this is written by locals. Seven writers are on a return visit, among them a customer of seven years who has ordered the same set eight times, a couple who have gone two or three times a month for two years and kept the photographs, and a lifelong Naeson-dong resident who rotates between here and two other neighbourhood places. One simply stops by whenever she wants sushi at home. Two were sent here by Uiwang locals and two came after seeing the roll on Instagram. Twelve first-timers say they will be back. The two-year regular notes that the plain mixed-sashimi order disappeared in November 2025 and now exists only inside a set for two — the menu here shifts.
  8. Takeaway yes, delivery no. One writer states the shop is not on any delivery app and takes orders by phone only (031-423-0975), and that calling twenty to thirty minutes ahead means walking straight out with the bag. Four describe a steady stream of takeaway customers, and one noticed that the bags almost always contain the roll while the tables order the set with nigiri. The weekday lunch specials, according to one writer, cannot be taken away. Another, who normally avoids takeaway sushi because it never travels well, says the thought has never once occurred to her here.

Parking

5 posts say you can park; 6 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park5 of 26 posts
Posts saying you cannot6 of 26 posts

There is no car park, and the writers contradict each other for a reason. Six say you cannot park and five say you can — but every one of the five means the road outside, not a car park, and the road is only available at certain hours. One gives them precisely: weekday 11:30–14:00, after 18:00, and all day Saturdays and holidays. Another says weekday lunchtimes are fine and otherwise use the paid lot on the main road. One admits to leaving the car opposite in what she suspects is a no-parking spot. Those who say no walk from a public lot — one gives the one under the motorway, a minute away, at ₩1,700 an hour. The lane is tight: single-file, with few spaces, so you may have to go round again, and one writer advises takeaway customers to arrive exactly at the time they were given. A regular of seven years says parking stresses her out every single visit.

Getting there

Getting inside

Toilet insideyes 0 · no 1 (of 26 posts read)

Nobody writes about floors or stairs. The registered address is unit 103 and one writer spells out "ground floor", so it is at street level. It sits on the back side of the block, facing the apartment towers rather than the road — two writers place it across from the Lotte Mart, one beside a supermarket opposite the housing estate's lane. Even so, no writer says whether there is a lip at the door or a step up into the room.

We do not know whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. None of the twenty-six posts mentions a step, a ramp or a threshold. What we do know is that the room is small — eight writers say so — that it fills at mealtimes, and that the toilet is outside in the building. None of that is encouraging, but it is not grounds for saying no. Nobody who writes about this place came in on wheels.

There is no toilet inside the restaurant. You go out and use the building's, and it is locked with a keypad code. The one writer who mentions it — the only one of the twenty-six — says the building is old, so not clean exactly, but not dirty either. Nobody says where you get the code or whether it is separated by sex. If you plan to sit a while with a drink, ask on the way in.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 2 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • One post's opening hours, phone number and parking note belong to a different restaurant entirely. A December 2025 post lists 11:30–22:00, a 15:00–16:30 break, last orders at 14:30 and 21:30, Mondays closed, no weekend break, a 0507 number, parking on site, wi-fi and high chairs. The other twenty-five posts all give 11:30–20:30, a 14:30–17:00 break, Sundays closed and 031-423-0975, and most of them say you cannot park. So we counted none of that post's facts except the plate of sushi she ate. We do not know whether there is wi-fi or a high chair here — not one of the other twenty-five mentions either.
  • Getting here without a car looks awkward. Only one writer addresses it: there is no station nearby, she says, but the Lotte Mart Uiwang bus stop is a two-minute walk. One other gives thirteen minutes on foot from the art college. The remaining twenty-four either drove — seven say so — or never say how they arrived. Nobody gives a station, a walking time or a bus number, so neither can we. Not one post discloses anything received from the shop, and eight state outright that they paid their own way.
