Ilsan Maneul Dak-hanmari is a one-dish chicken house in the eating alley of Daehwa-dong in Goyang, in a lane behind Jueop high school. The building is a single storey dressed as a hanok, with a tiled roof and paper lanterns, and you leave your shoes at the door for a pair of slippers. What it sells is one thing: a hotpot of jointed chicken under a ladleful of whole and minced garlic, which arrives raw and boils at your table for ten minutes; once two thirds of the bird is gone you finish with knife-cut noodles or rice porridge. A black-garlic version and a chicken pancake sit alongside. Nine writers relay the same history — a mother's chicken stew shop near Hankuk University in Seoul's Dongdaemun, opened in 1987 and carried on by her daughter. It is about a kilometre from Daehwa station on line 3, and close enough to the KINTEX halls and Ilsan Paik hospital that several writers came on the back of an errand to one of them. Closed Mondays. The posts we read run from September 2024 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart
- You are not left alone with the pot. The owner sets it down, winds a ten-minute kitchen timer and leaves; when it rings she comes back, stirs, adjusts the flame and tells you the order — rice cake and breast first, drumstick last. Nineteen posts describe this, and several first-timers say it meant they could not get the timing wrong. One writer, distracted by making his sauce, watched the pot climb towards boiling over, pressed the call bell, and had it brought back under control. The wall carries a large notice on how to eat the dish, which is what the ten minutes are for.
- You fetch the broth yourself. A dedicated fridge stands at one side of the room; when the pot reduces you ladle in as much as you want, and two writers call it unlimited. Six posts mention the fridge. When a noodle or porridge course goes in, the owner may top it up for you as well. The raw arrival of the chicken belongs to the same idea, and five writers single it out — this is not, one says, a samgyetang reheated from a pouch.
- Shoes come off at the door — even for the chair seating. Ten posts describe swapping into house slippers at the shoe rack, two note that slippers are provided, and one was told it was not compulsory. Most approve: less dust, a cleaner room, a small sense of occasion. One dissents, arguing that people now prefer to keep their shoes on and that here you cannot, whichever seating you choose. At the back are two floor-seated rooms with doors (seventeen posts), used for family meals and group bookings.
- Reviews are paid for in small gifts. Nine posts relay the offer: a dishcloth or scourer folded into a bear for a photo receipt review on Naver, a soft drink if you post to Instagram too, and at times bed socks or an iced americano instead. Two writers describe picking a colour from the bears hanging by the till. Only two of our thirty posts declare sponsorship — but it is worth reading this shop's reviews knowing that a review here has a price attached.

- Nine posts carry the same family story. A mother opened a small chicken-stew shop near Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 1987; the garlic-heavy version she cooked for a frail child became the dish; her daughter runs it now. Old family photographs hang outside and in, and four writers say they stopped to read them. The count of years varies: two say thirty-seven, one nearly forty, six say only that it is the second generation. Two writers compare the broth with a chain version and find it different.

Parking
12 posts say you can park; 2 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

We are not sure how many spaces there are. A single sentence — three cars in front, and street parking permitted after six in the evening under a local relaxation of enforcement — appears near-verbatim in eight posts; it is the shop's own notice, so we did not count it. Five writers describe what they saw, and they do not agree: two say three or four, one counts eight or more once the frontage and the corner are included (that post declares sponsorship), one calls it a cramped few spaces that leaves you looking for room nearby, and one says three at best, with the surrounding lanes as the fallback, concluding that parking here is not easy. One writer arrived at two on a weekend afternoon to find it already full. One notes that this eating alley is a hard place to park in general.

Getting inside
| Toilet inside | yes 0 · no 1 (of 30 posts read) |

On floors and stairs we have read nothing. The licence address reads 'entire ground floor', and the words for second floor, basement, stairs and lift appear nowhere in the thirty posts. Several describe a single-storey tiled-roof building, and seventeen mention floor-seated rooms at the back, so it appears to happen all on one level. But nobody says whether there is a step up at the door — which there usually is where shoes come off, and still no one wrote it down.
Nobody wrote about getting in with a wheelchair or a pram. The words for wheelchair, pram, ramp, step and threshold appear nowhere in the thirty posts — checked by machine and then by eye. All we know is that you take your shoes off at the entrance and change into slippers, which ten posts describe. Whether the shoe-changing area sits on a raised step, how high it is, and what the route to the floor-seated rooms at the back is like, no one recorded. This is not a claim that it cannot be done — only that we do not know.
One post in thirty mentions the toilet, and it says it is outside the shop (November 2025). That one line is everything we have — nobody says whether it is shared with the building, whether men's and women's are separate, how far it is, or whether you change back into your shoes to reach it. Since this is a shoes-off room, going to the toilet presumably means putting them on again — but nobody confirms that. The phrase for separate men's and women's toilets appears nowhere in the thirty.
No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know
- How you get here without a car is something we cannot tell you. Five of thirty posts give a distance to the station, and in four of them the figure — 974m from exit 6 at Daehwa on line 3 — is lifted straight from Naver. Only two writers estimated the walk themselves, and they disagree: over ten minutes, or fifteen. One says outright that the station is not on the doorstep and that a first visit is easier by car. Not one post mentions a bus or a bus stop — the words never appear in the thirty. Nor does anyone narrate walking from the station. Eight say they drove.
- Nobody reports having queued. Three writers say they did not wait, and all three had arranged it beforehand — two booked through Naver, one phoned, was asked how many were coming, and had a table held. So how long you wait if you simply turn up is something we do not know. Several describe a full room: a weekend so busy one writer could not photograph the interior, a seven-thirty evening with plenty of customers but no queue, another night simply busy. One mentions a photo spot outside that doubles as a waiting area. This is a place where one pot boils for ten minutes and then takes on noodles and porridge, so a table turns slowly — and nobody wrote down how slowly.
- Nine of the thirty posts fall inside three weeks, between 6 and 23 September 2026. We did not strike them out as boilerplate: the bodies do not overlap and the hashtags differ — one writer brought her mother, one watched a Vietnamese-Korean film crew scouting the room, one hit the nine o'clock kitchen cut-off and missed the porridge. Still, the two posts immediately before them, in August 2026, both opened with a sponsorship tag, and not one of the nine September posts declares anything. The four writers who say they paid their own way all sit outside that window. It is worth knowing that much of the warmest writing about this place comes from those three weeks.
- Accounts of the bird's size split. Six writers found it generous — chicken left over, two people too full for the porridge after the noodles, five adults amply fed on two birds and sides. One disagrees: the chicken was smaller than expected and ran out quickly, a big eater might find the meat short, and between the size and the price he is unsure about a second visit. Another writer says only that he could not guess the grade but that it was not small. No post says what size of bird the kitchen uses.
