Grill houseKorean

Bongdamok

봉담옥 Bongdam is the town it stands in; the -ok ending is the old suffix Korean eating houses take, meaning house.

Compiled from 29 blog posts read in fullSources →

Bongdamok is a grill house on the ground floor of the Hunjanggol building in the Donghwa district of Bongdam, Hwaseong, across from the primary school. It opened in autumn 2024 in what had been a bakery café, and two writers say it belongs to the same company as Hunjanggol upstairs. Pork and beef both, but the two pillars are Andong-style marinated beef short rib and a premium pork short rib butchered fresh each morning and sold only while it lasts. An ageing cabinet stands by the door with a sign giving seventy-two hours at 1°C, and the rice is a single scented variety — twenty posts talk about it. Until three in the afternoon on weekdays a lunch set adds a shepherd's-purse bean-paste stew and a bowl of that rice to any grill order. Open eleven to ten daily, with free soft-serve ice cream and coffee by the door on the way out.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. A soft-serve machine and a coffee machine stand by the door on the way out, and neither costs anything. Twenty posts mention them. One writer admits the ice cream is half the reason she came; another would have walked straight past, too full to look, if a child nearby had not said the word out loud. There is hot roasted-barley tea at the self-service bar too. The ice cream divides people: some call it exactly what cuts the fat after grilled meat, while one writer (May 2026) says it tasted of cough syrup and stopped at a mouthful, and another (November 2024) reports her wife could taste nothing in it at all. Two posts note you can carry it out to the terrace.
  2. Whether the staff grill for you depends on what you ordered. Five writers were grilled for, two grilled their own — and they are not contradicting each other. One post spells out the rule (July 2025): she saw the dearer dishes being cooked at the table, and assumes hers were not because they were at the cheaper end. What staff cooked: the pork short rib (twice), the bone-in beef rib, the unmarinated Andong beef. What people cooked themselves: the set menu and the marinated beef. Sometimes they only start it — one writer (July 2026) describes the owner showing the meat, searing it, and handing it over to finish to taste; another (October 2024) found it quick after the sear. Marinated meat gets a different pan: a plain one for fresh meat, ridged foil for marinated, and charcoal swapped in for beef.
  3. There are private rooms — sixteen posts mention them, and twelve say the same two things about them: family gatherings and work dinners. One writer counted two rooms in front of her table; two call them properly separate. One post is an actual work dinner, and she booked, because the place was busy. Fourteen writers call the room itself large; two note more than ten tables, in fours and sixes. One post describes the crowd (July 2025): mostly forties to sixties, and where there were young people they had come as families. Three advise ringing ahead for a room, one adding that the shop will arrange the seats you want if you call first.
  4. An ageing cabinet stands by the entrance with a sign reading seventy-two hours at 1°C. Eight posts copy that line; five more say every cut is butchered in-house each morning. The signature pork short rib is limited each day because of it, and the Andong beef is said to have its sinew trimmed by hand every morning. None of this is something we saw — it is the shop's own claim, written on the wall and carried out by its customers, and we could not check either the ageing or the butchering. The numbers do slip once: eight posts say seventy-two hours, one (February 2025) says seven days. Five writers report no off smell in the meat.
1 more
  1. Five writers say the portions are small; one says they were fine. What the five ordered is consistent — three of them a single pork portion of 160g: one (September 2026) thought two plates of belly looked short and added neck straight away; another (May 2025) notes that ₩18,000 a head does not buy much, and that grill houses now seem to start at a portion and a half; a third (November 2024) says it would not satisfy a big eater. The other two ordered fried rice to fill the gap (June 2026), and reported a boyfriend still hungry at the end (May 2026). The rice bowl is small too — one writer says you can feel the difference against an ordinary bowl. The one voice on the other side is a single line: the quantity was fine (February 2025).

Parking

Posts saying you can park24 of 29 posts

Twenty-four posts mention the parking — more than mention anything else here. The lot is shared with Hunjanggol upstairs. Four writers describe a first lot in front and a second behind the building; two mention an attendant directing cars, which one credits with keeping it orderly. The descriptions run from a car park the size of a sports field to a flat five stars for ease. It does fill. A writer who came the day after Parents' Day found it short and had to use another lot, and one more notes it gets tight some weekends. Whether it is free, though, almost nobody says — one post calls the lot free to use, and that is all.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 16 (of 29 posts read)
Toilet inside1 of 29 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 29 posts

It is on the ground floor — and there is another grill house directly above it. Sixteen posts place it under Hunjanggol. Two describe the relation between the two, and both are hearsay: one heard they were affiliated (August 2025), one that they are the same company (October 2024). The first writer wondered how two marinated-rib houses share a building, and decided that being related, and different enough in feel, made it work. One customer was disappointed and transferred her hopes upstairs (June 2026): she had hesitated between the two, came here, would not come back, and remembers the floor above looking busier. The space was a bakery café before — two posts say so, and two more note the full-height windows it left behind, and the light.

Nobody writes about a step at the door, and nobody writes about a ramp. Across twenty-nine posts, not one says whether a wheelchair or a pushchair can get in. One post does carry the lines 'step-free entrance' and 'accessible toilet' — but they are not about this shop. The same header block gives an address in a different town and opening hours no other post recognises: it is another restaurant's facilities list, copied whole (the body of the piece is a real visit here). We counted nothing from it. What we do know: ground floor (sixteen posts), a large room (fourteen), one writer who found the tables well spaced, and eight who mention high chairs and children's tableware. Whether there is a lip at the entrance, what the door is like, how wide the toilet door is — none of it. If it matters, ringing 031-298-5659 is the reliable way to find out.

The toilet is inside — and exactly one writer says so (July 2025), adding that it was clean and that someone had put an air freshener in it. Two more used it and found it clean (February 2025, May 2026) without saying where it is. That men's and women's are separate is written in one person's own voice only (June 2026), who also found a changing table in the women's and was glad of it. The same claim appears in three other posts, but there it is the Naver facilities list copied whole — booking, separate toilets, wi-fi, mobile payment, high chairs, all in one run of words — so we did not count it. How many there are, or how big, nobody writes.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 30 posts we gathered, 1 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Writers disagree about the price, and the line they divide on is clear: lunch or dinner. All four who call it good value are talking about lunch — a set menu that runs from cheap to premium, a weekday special that brings the price down, a ₩14,000 pork-and-leaves plate, a grill house that gives you your money's worth. The three who call it dear are talking about the meat and the sides: worth the money once you see the ingredients, but dear (May 2026); ₩18,000 a head that does not buy much; ₩10,000 for fried rice, steep for a grill house. The lunch menu runs until three on weekdays and cannot be ordered after — three posts say so. The prices themselves barely moved across two years.
  • Only one writer actually queued: a Friday evening in May 2026, arriving after seven and getting a table ten minutes later. The rest only watched it fill — the evening shift means writing your name on a list, though five in the afternoon meant no wait (August 2025); one table at four o'clock and a full room by the time they left (July 2025); theirs the only car at eleven, the lot filling as noon came on (November 2025); and the day after Parents' Day, simply packed (May 2026). One post sets out the rhythm: busy from noon to one and around six to seven, easiest right at opening or near last orders. The one person who came for a work dinner booked first. Whether there is anywhere to wait, or a remote queue, nobody says.
  • Not one of these twenty-nine writers came without a car. No post mentions a bus or a train; six describe arriving by car — out for a drive, passing on business, straight from work — and twenty-four talk about the parking. Only one names the nearest station, and puts it at four kilometres and ten minutes' drive — not a walk. Every direction given here assumes a car: across from the primary school (six posts), the ground floor of the Hunjanggol building, the first Bongdam district, the Donghwa district. Whether a bus stops nearby, and where you would walk from, we could not establish. Without a car, check the route before you set out.
  • Two of the thirty posts are sponsored. A January 2025 piece carries #sponsored in the hashtags above the fold and the name of a review agency at the very bottom; an October 2024 piece ends its video hashtags with #ad. Neither says so in the body — you only catch it by reading to the last hashtag. Thirteen writers state they paid their own way; fourteen say nothing either way. Removing the two does not change the shape of what is said here: both are positive, but so are plenty of others. What is worth reading carefully is anything only those two say — the claim about hand-trimming every morning, and the origin-of-ingredients board. One more thing: twenty-nine posts are not twenty-nine people. One writer came in November 2025 and again in December and wrote both up.
  • Accounts differ on whether you can ask for more of the side dishes. Six writers got more for nothing: the staff kept topping them up even while rushed (May 2026); one went back twice for the potato salad; the japchae came again and again; the cucumber kimchi several times over (October 2024); just ask a member of staff. But one post (December 2024) says extra sides are ordered through the table terminal, and another (May 2025) that the fresh kimchi with spring onion costs extra. Some are free and some are not, and we could not work out which is which. The leaves for wrapping are free from the self-service bar — twenty posts say so — and one writer notes the salted roe is refillable.
