Hwangnam Yangok

황남양옥 Hwangnam is the neighbourhood (Hwangnam-dong) beside the Daereungwon tombs, and yangok means a Western-style house — the restaurant sits in an old red-brick house with a tiled Korean roof.

Compiled from 29 blog posts read in fullSources →

A Korean restaurant in an old red-brick house one alley off Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, right by the Daereungwon stone wall. Seating is split across three former rooms, you order from a tablet or kiosk at the table, and it opens at 9 a.m. The draw is the water-parsley and beef-jeon bibim noodles (14,000 won), eaten in 22 of the 29 visit posts, followed by shank gukbap in mild or spicy (11,000 won), raw-beef bibimbap and mulhoe (16,000 won), and a pork cutlet (12,000 won) that families often order for children. We read 30 posts from 16 July to 28 October 2026 and set one aside as being about another restaurant. Eleven posts went with family, five with friends, one alone.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Thirteen posts said the portions were large. One couple nearly ordered an extra dish expecting small noodle bowls and found one was enough for two; another said the mulhoe, with its side of noodles, was enormous. No post called the portions small.
  2. Easy with small children: nine posts saw high chairs, and eight went with kids. Four describe a UV steriliser by the entrance holding baby forks, spoons and bowls, with a microwave above it. Several ordered the mild gukbap or the cutlet for children who can't take heat.
  3. Ten posts mention the big windows, which look out on stone walls, tiled roofs and the hanok guesthouses in the alley; one recommends asking for a window seat. One late-afternoon visitor had to lower the curtain against the sun.
  4. You order at the table: ten posts used a tablet or kiosk there, and one notes you pay up front as you order. Several say there is no paper menu inside, so they read the board outside, which also comes in English (one post adds Japanese and Chinese).

Parking

3 posts say you cannot park. None say you can.

Posts saying you cannot3 of 29 posts

There is no restaurant car park. Three posts found nowhere to park at the door, and all eight that drove left the car elsewhere — the free spaces by Sunghyejeon, the Hwangnam-dong community-centre lot, the Jjoksaem temporary lot or the roadside — and walked. One-line 'no parking' info blocks were copied, not observed, so we didn't count them.

Getting inside

Separate restrooms2 of 29 posts

Nobody wrote about floors or levels. It looks like a single-storey house, but that is our reading of photos-described text, not something any post stated.

No post mentions steps, a threshold, or getting in with a wheelchair or pushchair; one only says the entrance is like a house's front door. Several went with babies, but none says whether a pushchair went in.

Two posts describe the same toilet layout: separate men's and women's, with the women's indoors and the men's in a separate space outside. One post found it cramped.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

What we do not know

  • Posts disagree on how hot the spicy gukbap is: three say it is barely spicy (one compares it to a mild instant ramyeon), two call it spicy.
  • Only one post waited: ten minutes at the lunch peak, then about 30 minutes for food because the kitchen was backed up. Two posts were seated straight away and one said food came quickly; two mention a bench outside for waiting. Most visits were early morning, so we know little about lunch and dinner crowds.
  • No post describes getting there by bus or from a station; directions only start from the Daereungwon wall or the main Hwangnidan-gil street.
  • Many posts say dogs are allowed, but only one actually brought a dog. Dog owners were seated in a separate room that had no air conditioning in midsummer — fans only — and the dog had to stay on the floor, so they ate in a hurry.
  • Opening hours: all 20 posts from August 2026 on give 9:00 to 19:00, last order 18:30; fifteen say closed Tuesdays and one says Fridays. The single July 2026 post gave 9:30 to 19:30 (last order 19:00) — we can't tell whether the hours changed or it was mis-copied. These are almost all copied info blocks. One post warns that it closes early for a dinner visit.
  • Prices held steady across July to October 2026; noodles plus a gukbap for two comes to about 25,000 won. Two posts called it reasonable — relative to tourist-area prices — and none called it expensive.
  • Fourteen posts give the phone number 0507-1467-7442; one gives 010-3959-8023. One post says even solo diners can book, but no post describes actually making a reservation.
  • Three posts disclose sponsorship, two say they paid, and 24 say nothing. Many share near-identical titles and hashtags ('Hwangnidan-gil restaurant', 'Gyeongju breakfast', 'Daereungwon eats'); one tagged breakfast after a dinner visit, and two paste the restaurant's own mission statement. Some of this is likely paid copy, so we counted what people saw and did rather than their praise.
