Chinese

Sinpungru

신풍루 Sinpung is the village the restaurant stands in (Sinpung-ri, Sangseo-myeon); -ru means a pavilion or tall hall, a common ending for Chinese restaurant names in Korea.

Compiled from 15 blog posts read in fullSources →

A lone Chinese restaurant on Yeongseo-ro in Sinpung-ri, Sangseo-myeon, just past the Hwacheon Tunnel from town. It is a converted house, and several posts say the sign is easy to miss. People come for ganjjajang, jjamppong and glutinous-rice sweet-and-sour pork; on the July 2025 menu jjajang noodles were 8,000 won, jjamppong and ganjjajang 10,000, and a small tangsuyuk 20,000. It serves lunch only and closes on Saturdays. We read 22 posts from October 2024 to October 2026; 15 record an actual meal, 6 are Hwacheon restaurant lists or travel itineraries, and 1 turned out to be about a different restaurant.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. The dining room is small, with a second room at the back. Eight posts describe the seating: six tables, about five, room for roughly twenty; others mention more seats through the back door, or a storeroom-like annex with four tables. Three posts call it small and one calls it fairly roomy. A party of eight adults and four children split across three tables.
  2. You can see the kitchen. Two posts say so: one watched the cook start the moment the order went in and found the food came out fast; the other called it more or less an open kitchen.
  3. Posts split on how hot the jjamppong is: three found it hot, one said it was mild enough for a young child to eat. Another asked for it spicier, so heat may be adjustable on request.
  4. Three posts say portions are large: the regular yangjangpi was more than four people could finish, the 6,000-won fried dumplings came ten to a plate, and one table took dumplings home. Others mention a heaped bowl of rice with jjamppongbap, or extra rice brought out.

  1. Three posts say the owners and staff were kind: one diner got food on a sleeve and the woman watching from the kitchen came over to wipe it; another heard staff offer hot water to a table with a child if the food was too spicy. Two mention being handed aprons, and one was given sikhye after the meal.

Parking

Posts saying you can park3 of 15 posts

You park in front. Three posts describe it first-hand: one found the lot roomy and easy; one counted three marked spaces and said to use the open ground nearby when they are full; one said it is bigger than it looks but hard at lunchtime. Other posts' "parking available" lines are copied info blocks and not counted.

Where it is

Map showing where Sinpungru is

We could not find this shop’s own listing on Naver Map, so the link searches for its Korean name around this spot instead.

Getting inside

We don't know about floors. It looks like a single-storey converted house, but no post says so. That means nobody wrote about it, not that there's nothing to say.

We don't know about steps at the entrance or wheelchair and stroller access. No post mentions it.

We don't know where the toilet is or whether it is separated by gender. No post mentions it.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 21 posts we gathered, 6 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • No post mentions a move or new owners. What seems to have changed is the hours: five 2025 posts give 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last order 3:30), while three visits from February 2026 on say it closes at 3 p.m.; they disagree on opening at 9 (two posts) or 10 (one). All nine posts that give hours agree it is closed Saturdays. The change seems to fall between July 2025 and February 2026, but the restaurant hasn't announced anything, so call before going.
  • Things sell out late in the day: one couple arriving around 2:10 on a Friday found the ganjjajang gone, and a party of twelve was told the kitchen could make only eight more noodle dishes. Several posts advise going at lunchtime because the hours are short.
  • We know little about waits. No post describes queuing. One visitor who came after the lunch rush said the back room means you rarely wait, but noted it was full on an earlier visit. The "busy at lunch" line comes from listing posts, not visits.
  • We don't know how to get there by bus. Everyone who wrote about a visit drove, or stopped by from a campsite or the festival. A listing's advice to take a Sinpung-ri bus from Hwacheon terminal, and another's claim that it is walkable from the terminal, are copied text and not something we rely on.
  • Our most complete price list is one post's transcription of the July 2025 menu; the 2026 posts' jjajang 8,000, ganjjajang 10,000 and small tangsuyuk 20,000 won match it. Only the shrimp-mushroom rice bowl differs, 10,000 won in March 2025 and 11,000 in July. The 9,000-won jjamppong in listing posts looks like an old copied price. No post calls the place expensive.
  • Five posts give the same phone number, 033-441-9105. One family booked a platter dish by phone and found it ready on arrival; another couple phoned their order in from the car. A listing says kkanpunggi needs four hours' notice, but that post calls the place famous in Cheorwon, so it may be mixing it up with another restaurant.
