Korean

Sokcho Haenyeo Maeul

속초해녀마을 Haenyeo are Korea's women free-divers who gather shellfish by hand, and maeul means village — so the name reads 'Sokcho Women Divers' Village'.

Compiled from 21 blog posts read in fullSources →

Sokcho Haenyeo Maeul is an abalone and seafood restaurant near the Sokcho IC, on Baramkkot-maeul-gil in Nohak-dong, with a view of Ulsanbawi. It opens at 8 a.m. The two dishes people order most are the abalone stew (25,000 won) and the abalone mixed cold raw-fish soup (26,000 won): of the 21 posts from people who ate there, 15 had the stew and 14 the cold soup. Main dishes come with a small bowl of abalone porridge first, and you fry your own eggs at a self-service corner (two posts give its hours as 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and two found it shut at dinner). We read 30 posts dated 10 June to 20 October 2026. In 21 of them the writer ate here. We did not count 8: multi-restaurant lists, write-ups with no visit behind them, and one post the same person put up on two blogs. We set aside 1 post that was really about a guesthouse. The restaurant used to be called Baramkkot Haenyeo Maeul.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

What sets it apart

  1. There is a separate seating area for diners with dogs. Ten posts describe a pet space kept apart from the main hall, and two of those writers actually brought a dog. One places it in an annex, another at the back of the hall. The advice that pet seats are few and need booking is passed on from the restaurant; no one wrote about booking one.
  2. Facilities for small children come up often. Five posts saw high chairs and five mention a baby cot ('the first restaurant I've seen with a baby bed'). Three posts were written by people who actually brought children.
  3. You order on a tablet at the table, as 8 posts note, variously calling it a Hi-order, a table-order or a kiosk.
  4. The dining room is large: 8 posts call it spacious and 8 call it clean. Four mention seeing Seoraksan through the windows, and one notes the high ceiling.
2 more
  1. Posts disagree a little on heat. Five call a broth spicy or fiery (four about the abalone stew, one about the jjamppong tofu stew). Three say it has some heat but not much, or is 'slightly spicy'. One found the stew broth bland and some mussels unopened, and another found the stew ordinary and left much of it.
  2. Repeat visits are common: 5 posts say this was at least their second time ('came last year, and again this year').

Posts saying you can park12 of 21 posts

Parking is easy. Of the 21 posts from people who ate here, 12 say they parked in the lot out front, and 9 of those call it large ('wide on both the upper and lower level', 'plenty of spaces'). Behind the lot is a pink muhly grass field, and several September and October posts mention taking photos there after the meal.

Getting inside

Step-free access1 of 21 posts
Separate restrooms1 of 21 posts

No one who visited describes the floor level or stairs; there is only the '1st floor' in the address. That does not mean there are stairs, only that nobody wrote about it.

Only one post describes getting in: no steps up to the dining room, so pushing a dog stroller in was easy. Nobody went in a wheelchair, so we won't draw a conclusion about wheelchair access from that one post.

No one says whether the toilets are inside the restaurant. One post notes separate men's and women's toilets, kept clean.

No one mentioned: Second floor · In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 8 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Prices are the same across posts: the cold abalone soup is 26,000 won from June to October 2026, the abalone stew 25,000 won from August to October, and the sea-urchin seaweed soup 20,000 won. One post calls the meal expensive. Three say it felt pricey at first but was justified by the amount of seafood. The only figure that differs is extra sea urchin roe: 10,000 won in an August post, 15,000 won on the menu in an October post.
  • Twelve posts from people who ate here give opening hours, all copied from the restaurant's listing. Ten say 8:00 a.m. to 7:50 p.m. (last order 6:50). Two August posts say 8:00 a.m. to 8:20 p.m. (last order 7:20). Another August post gives 7:50, so we cannot tell whether closing was later only in summer. Only one post mentions days off, and it says the restaurant is open every day of the year.
  • Every visitor drove in via the Sokcho IC; nobody arrived by bus or train, so we don't know how easy it is by public transport.
  • Only one post covers waiting: it was busy, but they walked straight in. Another arrived around 5 p.m. to a quiet room that was nearly full by the time they left. A remark that weekend lunch may have a wait was a guess, so we did not count it.
  • None of the visits were with friends: 8 were with family and 2 were couples.
  • Two phone numbers circulate: 0507-1416-5157 (in 6 posts) and 033-638-5157 (in 3). Booking is mentioned only in copied listings; nobody wrote about booking.
  • Some posts read as one promotional batch. Three repeat the same lines: 'five minutes by car' from the resorts, an 'independent space' for dogs, and a winter list of popular dishes (jjamppong tofu stew, abalone porridge, soft tofu, raw-fish rice bowls). One of the three says it was paid to write; the other two don't say. Claims such as 'seafood gathered by women divers' and 'broth made from more than 20 ingredients' are the restaurant's own lines, which we pass on but don't rely on. Three posts say they were sponsored or supported (2 of them by people who ate here); 7 say they paid their own way (6 of them by people who ate here).
  • The name has changed. Before June 2026 the restaurant was called Baramkkot Haenyeo Maeul. One post lists it as 'Sokcho Haenyeo Maeul (formerly Baramkkot Haenyeo Maeul)', and another writer only realised they were the same place on arrival. We don't know when the name changed, and no post says the restaurant moved.
