Korean

Geumcheon Hoegwan

금천회관 Hoegwan means 'hall', an old-fashioned word Korean restaurants use in their names; the posts do not explain Geumcheon.

Compiled from 25 blog posts read in fullSources →

Geumcheon Hoegwan is a Korean restaurant on the second floor of a building in downtown Hoenggye, Daegwallyeong, across from the township office. Mulgalbi (pork ribs simmered in soy broth) and osam bulgogi (squid and pork belly) are 15,000 won a portion and pollack soup is 10,000 won; people order two portions or more and eat them wrapped in lettuce, with about eight side dishes. We read 30 posts from 13 February to 18 October 2026; 25 of them describe eating there (2 were about other restaurants, 3 were listings or takeout).

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Generous portions are the most repeated remark, in 13 posts — 'two portions filling the whole hot plate', 'two portions that look like three'; one family took leftover pollack home. Five posts said the price is reasonable and none called it expensive.
  2. Twelve posts went with children. Five saw high chairs, and families repeatedly ordered mulgalbi or pollack soup for the kids because they are not spicy. Nine posts called the food spicy and four said it was not — the spicy remarks are mostly about osam bulgogi, the mild ones about mulgalbi. Thirteen said it is sweet.
  3. One post says osam bulgogi must be ordered for at least two and everyone must order a dish; another notes it comes without rice or soup.

There is no dedicated car park: six posts said so and parked on the street or at the township office across the road. One post from a Friday in February 2026 found that lot full and parked easily at a free temporary public lot behind the restaurant by the Olympic Plaza; one more said parking at the back was fine.

The dining room is upstairs, reached by stairs: 10 posts noted the second floor from their visit. Two said there is no lift, and one of them carried a baby's stroller up. Three mentioned windows looking over town with good light.

Ten posts confirm the restaurant is upstairs; nobody described the ground floor or any basement.

We do not know whether a wheelchair can get in. Two posts say it is up a flight of stairs with no lift, and one carried a stroller up; nobody mentioned the entrance step.

Two posts say the toilet is outside the restaurant — one on the ground floor, one half a flight up in the building with its own door code. Nobody described whether it is separated by gender or how big it is.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • One post waited — at 1 p.m. on a February 2026 visit the room was full, they got a table after a short wait, and a break notice went up right after them. Two posts were the first or among few customers. Two posts saw the place close early after running out of ingredients, so late lunch or dinner is not guaranteed.
  • Opening hours are given almost unanimously as 10:00-21:00 with last orders at 19:30. The closing day is disputed: alternate Thursdays in two posts (one copied from a listing), every Thursday in one, and open every day in one. Because it closes early when ingredients run out, one post advises phoning ahead on 033-335-5103; two posts found it full with group reservations.
  • No post arrived by bus. Some mention the Hoenggye intercity bus terminal is close, but everyone drove; this means nobody reported it, not that it is impractical.
  • Sixteen posts went with family, two with a partner and one with a friend. Nobody went alone, so we do not know how it suits a solo diner.
  • Prices did not change between February and October 2026. Whether rice is included is disputed: one post says it came with the mulgalbi, two ordered it separately at 1,000 won. One couple's meal of two mulgalbi plus two rice came to 32,000 won.
  • One post says the room used to have floor seating and was remodelled with tables around the 2018 Olympics; others describe it as freshly redone. One post says beef stew (yukgaejang) was sold some years ago but no longer appeared by August 2026.
  • One post says it visited by invitation and we counted it as such. 'Open since 1988', 'certified Korean pork' and 'domestic ribs' are the restaurant's own claims as repeated by bloggers, so we do not rely on them; three posts did see the origin board on the wall.
