Jeong Eun-suk Chodang Sundubu

정은숙초당순두부 Jeong Eun-suk is the chef-owner's name, and Chodang sundubu is the soft tofu Gangneung's Chodang-dong is known for; the registered name 초당면옥 means 'Chodang noodle house'.

Compiled from 25 blog posts read in fullSources →

A tofu restaurant across the road from the Heo Gyun–Heo Nanseolheon birthplace in Chodang-dong, Gangneung (200 Nanseolheon-ro). The Chodang tofu set — soft-tofu hot pot plus tofu samhap of boiled pork, tofu and fermented flounder — is 20,000 won per person; the 'myeongpum' set adds glazed dried pollock for 25,000 won. The hot pot simmers on a burner at the table, and the place opens at 8 a.m. We read 30 posts from May 2025 to October 2026; 25 record an actual meal. Of those, 15 ordered the myeongpum set and 4 the tofu set. 22 of the 25 were posted between late September and late October 2026.

Counted from what bloggers wrote in their posts; we did not confirm it with the restaurant. Where the values differ, it may be a change over time rather than a disagreement, so we show when each one was written.

What sets it apart

  1. Ten posts met a queue. The three that timed it waited about an hour (Saturday 1:30 p.m.), about an hour (2 p.m. in August) and 20 minutes. Others counted parties ahead: 3 (weekend 11 a.m.), 7 (11:30 a.m.) and 11 (the Monday ending a holiday). You register on a Tableling kiosk at the door and get a KakaoTalk call; two posts warn the slot is cancelled if you don't come in within two minutes. Eleven posts mention a covered waiting area or chairs by the entrance.
  2. Four posts skipped the queue with a Naver booking: a 20,000-won deposit paid in advance and deducted from the bill, and one got 10% off the myeongpum set. One noticed same-day slots closing right after they booked. A single post said the restaurant takes no reservations and you must queue on site — four against one.
  3. Five posts found the hot pot not spicy and four found it not heavily seasoned. Families describe ladling the plain white broth out for children first, with the chili paste served separately. Four posts went with children; one says it was given a high chair.
  4. Eight posts found the portions large. The one that added extra pork told readers not to; another planned to add some and barely finished the set. Six posts got side dishes refilled, some by helping themselves.

Parking

Posts saying you can park11 of 25 posts

Eleven posts parked in the lot in front of or beside the restaurant. Several point to the free Heo Nanseolheon memorial park lot when it is full; one parked there and walked over in under five minutes. A visitor at 2 p.m. in August found the lot packed.

Getting inside

In a basementyes 0 · no 1 (of 25 posts read)

One post says the restaurant is on the ground floor of its building. No other post describes steps or floors.

Nobody wrote about a step at the entrance or whether a wheelchair or stroller gets in. That means we don't know, not that there is a barrier.

One post puts the toilet 'to the right of the entrance'; another lists it as outdoors in its info box. We can't tell whether it is inside. Separate men's and women's toilets appear only in copied amenity lists, so we didn't count them.

No one mentioned: Second floor · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 29 posts we gathered, 4 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • No post arrived by bus. One came by KTX to Gangneung Station and went on to Chodang-dong without saying how; another walked a route the map called ten minutes and it took twenty. Five posts say they drove.
  • Seventeen posts list opening hours, nearly all copied from an info box. All agree it opens at 8 a.m. and closes on Tuesdays. Most give 6:30 p.m. as closing time; one says 6 p.m. Many say Mondays close at 4 p.m., and one gives a 9 a.m. Monday opening. Last orders are listed as 5:30 p.m., or 3 p.m. on Mondays. One post says the myeongpum set can only be ordered until 3 p.m.
  • Nine posts give the phone number as 0507-1424-3696 and two as 033-652-3696. One diner phoned ahead, was told there were seats, and found a queue on arrival. Most posts say bookings go through Naver.
  • Prices don't vary between posts: myeongpum set 25,000 won, tofu set 20,000, tofu samhap 31,000, tofu or soft-tofu hot pot 15,000. But every post that gives a price dates from late September to October 2026, so we don't know earlier prices. One post's meal for two — two myeongpum sets and two colas — came to 54,000 won.
  • Seventeen posts appeared between October 20 and 27, 2026, many with the same layout — info box, the myeongpum set, the dishes in the same order, the same Naver link at the end — and several push Naver booking and its discount. Only one discloses sponsorship; the rest say nothing, so we counted them. Keep in mind that the tally leans heavily on one week.
