1703참한집 동해점 1703 Chamhanjip, Donghae branch — a charcoal pork house in the middle of Cheongok-dong where the staff grill every cut for you at the table except the thin kkodeulsal, and the honeycomb pork skin is what people come back for.
Charcoal-grilled meat · Donghae-si, Cheongok-dong
Data as of · Published ·
A charcoal pork house on the ground floor at 107 Hanseom-ro, in the middle of Cheongok-dong, Donghae. The licence says Chamhanjip Donghae; the sign and the customers say 1703 Chamhanjip Donghae. It is the only Gangwon branch of a chain that started in North Gyeongsang, and it opened in the summer of 2024. Cold-aged belly, neck, jowl and kkodeulsal go over coffee-wood charcoal along with the house honeycomb pork skin — and apart from the kkodeulsal, the staff grill all of it for you at the table. Five in the afternoon until midnight, closed Mondays; though two posts from December 2025 onward give eleven as the closing hour. The posts we read run from November 2024 to September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.
What sets it apart
- People choose this place for one reason: somebody else does the grilling. The coffee-wood charcoal runs hot enough to burn meat the moment you look away, so a member of staff stands at your table turning three pieces at a time, then cuts everything bite-size and moves it to a steel rack beside the fire — which has coals of its own underneath, so the last piece is as warm as the first. The one exception is the kkodeulsal: thin, quick, and left to you. One writer picked the place because they knew they would be too busy talking; another because she and her husband argue about how to grill. It is not undivided attention, though — two writers note that the staff are working several tables and that you still have to keep half an eye on your own.
- The first order has to be three servings. After that you can add one at a time. Two people therefore start with three — which is less absurd than it sounds, since a serving is 130 grams and several writers say the portions are small. One is openly annoyed at 130g; another says three servings at ₩42,000 looked like one person's dinner. One writer, though, reports being told the kitchen adds twenty grams over the stated weight.
- Post a photo and a review to social media, call a member of staff, and the cheese-topped steamed egg — a ₩4,000 item — arrives free. Several writers describe the notice on the wall. Which means a fair share of the posts we read were written by people who had collected, or could collect, that dish. It is not sponsorship, but it is not nothing either, and it is worth holding in mind while reading them.
- Several writers bring children and say it works. There are high chairs, and two posts mention a steriliser for children's tableware. One writer describes staff fixing her child's dish to the table so it could not be knocked into the fire, and cutting the child's meat smaller onto a compartment tray. Four mention the small toys kept by the till for young guests. Set against that, a number of writers stress how fierce the charcoal is. Nobody mentions a nappy-changing table.
- You wait for the charcoal. Two writers explain that the coffee-wood binchotan has to burn for about ten minutes before it comes to the table, or it spits. Hence one writer's note that the coals arrived long after the order, and another's advice to order the next round before the last one runs out — she also mentions that on her night some of the part-time staff simply did not turn up.
- What comes instead of water is bitter-melon tea — two writers mention it, one having been told it is brewed from the owner's own crop rather than poured from a syrup pump. Each person gets a plate with four dips (salt, the house soy sauce, roasted soybean flour, chilli). The lettuce and the fermented anchovy sauce are not brought unless you ask — free, but not automatic. Sixteen writers pass the tip along, which tells you how many people miss it.
- It is a chain branch — but the writers do not agree where the first one is. Two say Andong, one says Yeongju, both in North Gyeongsang. "The only branch in Gangwon" and "there is one at Seolleung in Seoul" are not in conflict. One writer reports the owner saying that only the Andong original and this branch are allowed to cook the meat their particular way; what that means is not explained in the post either.

What people order
The most ordered dish is chamhan samgyeopsal (참한 삼겹살 (130g)) — 25 of 27 posts.

Parking
4 posts say you can park; 3 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

The writers do not agree about parking. Many reproduce the line "in front of the shop and in the surrounding lanes" — but that is the Naver listing's own wording, so we have not counted it. Only four describe where they actually left a car: the lot behind the building, the kerb, a nearby public car park (free in the evening), and the public car park by the Daiso. Three say the opposite — no lot of its own, nothing in front, find a lane. One writes only that parking is "iffy". One splits it by time of day: hard in the afternoon, fine in front of the shop in the evening. If you are driving, plan on the public car park.

Naver Map has a full English mode — Settings → Language → English. In Korea it gives better walking and transit directions than Google Maps.

Nobody says whether you can get in with a wheelchair or a pushchair. Across all twenty-seven posts the words wheelchair, pushchair, step, threshold and ramp do not appear once. We know two things only: it is on the ground floor — one writer says so in prose, the rest merely carry the check-in address line — and all the seating is at tables with chairs, with no floor seating, which two writers note. Whether there is a lip at the door, and how much room there is between tables, we do not know. Not absent: unobserved.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 30 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.
We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- We know almost nothing about the toilet. Of twenty-seven writers exactly one looked and wrote it down: it is shared between men and women, and you should bring your own paper. One other says plainly that she never went in and so cannot say whether it was clean. The remaining twenty-five do not mention it at all — which means nobody wrote about it, not that there is nothing to write about.
- Not one writer arrived by bus. A single post gives a route — the 21-1 from Mukho station, off at the Jugong 2-cha stop, 155 metres and three minutes on foot — and that writer drove, and parked at the public lot by the Daiso. The other twenty-six never mention a station or a bus at all. What they do say, repeatedly, is that it is easy to find: the middle of Cheongok-dong, behind the Lotte Cinema, opposite the LG store and the Ediya, at the McDonald's crossroads. Two walked five minutes from their hotel.
- One post declares sponsorship — a bare "#sponsored" at the end of the text, with no terms given. One writer says a visiting neighbour picked up the bill; seven state they paid their own way; the other eighteen say nothing. But this is a shop that hands out a free steamed egg for a review (see above), so silence is not the same as nothing received. Two writers appear twice, so twenty-seven posts are twenty-five people.
- The closing hour seems to have moved, and we cannot say when. From November 2024 to September 2025, twenty-three writers give midnight, with last orders at eleven. Two posts — one from December 2025, one from September 2026 — give eleven instead, and the later one puts last orders at ten. Ten months apart, two people writing the same thing is hard to call a typo; but nothing in between records an hour at all, so we cannot tell you which is current. If you are going late, ring first.
- The phone number on file does not match the posts. Twelve writers give 070-4833-7718; one gives 070-4833-7811, which differs only in the last two digits and reads as a slip. The number in our own licence record, 033-532-7333, is something else entirely — most likely the previous tenant's. The name is the same story: the licence says Chamhanjip Donghae, while the sign, the check-ins and every writer say 1703 Chamhanjip Donghae. Both are worth a human confirming once.
- One writer says she will not come back. Not because of the food — because of the noise: voices bouncing off the walls, music loud enough that conversation was impossible. The same post praises the meat, the side dishes and the staff. She is the only person who mentions the noise at all, so we cannot tell you whether it was that night or every night. The same writer was moved mid-meal when the extractor over her table would not cope; staff carried the whole setting across and sent over two free drinks.
