Sunchang Korea Tteokbokki Festa

순창 KOREA 떡볶이 페스타

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

A two-day street-food festival in Sunchang, the county famous for gochujang (fermented chilli paste), built around tteokbokki — chewy rice cakes in spicy sauce. It runs Saturday 21 to Sunday 22 November 2026, 10:00–17:00, at Sunchang Fermentation Theme Park and the neighbouring Traditional Gochujang Folk Village. Entry is free; some activities charge. We read 30 blog posts by people who went in 2025 and picked 8 of them for this page.

What 8 visitors said

For 2024 we read 4 posts but none described an actual visit, so we used none. For 2025 we read 30 posts, found 9 written after a visit and picked 8. Everything from blogs is last year's experience; where it clashes with this year's announcements, the announcements win. This year's facts come from the Korea Tourism Organization listing (updated 28 Oct 2026) and the festival website.

What people liked

Cheap plates: ₩2,000–3,0004 of 8 posts

Last year a plate cost ₩2,000–3,000, so visitors could try several kinds without spending much. 25-22 25-26 25-27 25-30

Plenty of styles5 of 8 posts

Black-bean, curry, tomato and thistle-gochujang versions all appeared. One visitor felt most were standard fare. 25-22 25-23 25-24 25-30 25-28

Clean zones and hand-wash taps5 of 8 posts

Food came in reusable bowls, with return points and hand-wash taps between stalls; visitors found the site tidy. 25-22 25-23 25-24 25-26 25-28

Rice cakes grilled over open fire5 of 8 posts

Toasting rice-cake skewers over a wood fire was a favourite; expect a queue. 25-22 25-23 25-26 25-28 25-30

Lots for children6 of 8 posts

Play areas, a musical-instrument corner, a nature playground and craft booths kept children busy. 25-22 25-23 25-24 25-26 25-27 25-28

Parking stewards3 of 8 posts

Plenty of stewards directed cars to car parks and walked people to the site. 25-22 25-26 25-27

What people struggled with

Not enough seating2 of 8 posts

At busy times the eating areas filled up; people ate on the grass or walked a long way to find a seat. 25-26 25-28

Sunday lunchtime crowds and parking3 of 8 posts

Around Sunday lunchtime the car parks were full and traffic backed up outside the theme park. 25-26 25-28 25-30

Hard to buy water3 of 8 posts

Drinks were hard to find and there was no convenience store on site; bring water. 25-22 25-23 25-26

Awkward mobile leaflet2 of 8 posts

The QR-code mobile leaflet could not be zoomed, making it hard to read. 25-22 25-26

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

Who goes, and when

Five of the 8 posts were family outings with young children. Most drove in from Gwangju or Jeonju; one family drove five hours from Seoul. Some combined it with autumn leaves at nearby Gangcheonsan.

Visiting from abroad

None of the posts mentioned foreign visitors, and we found no English information in the official listing or on the Korean-only website. Last year many stalls took orders by QR code, sent a KakaoTalk message when food was ready and took Toss or KakaoPay; a help booth assisted with QR ordering, and some stalls didn't accept cards. Some activities need advance booking on the website (체험신청 → 사전예약); we couldn't check whether sign-up works without a Korean phone number. Most dishes are gochujang-spicy; black-bean (jjajang) tteokbokki is a milder option.

Weather and crowds

Last year (15–16 Nov) visitors mostly had clear, sunny days, with little shade on site. Crowds varied a lot: early Saturday arrivals found easy parking, while Sunday lunchtime brought full car parks and a packed indoor eating area. One visitor heard Saturday's opening day was busier still, so aim for opening time (10:00) rather than a particular day. This year falls six days later in the season and there's no forecast yet — bring a warm layer.

Getting there and access

The site is Sunchang Fermentation Theme Park, 55 Jangnyu-ro, Sunchang-eup, in rural North Jeolla. Public transport and shuttle details for 2026 haven't been published — we couldn't confirm them; check 'Directions' (찾아오시는 길) on the festival website. Last year's visitors who mentioned transport all came by car; shuttle bus information was posted, and stewards spread cars across six car parks, some a 10-minute walk from the site. Sunday lunchtime brought jams. By taxi, show the driver the Korean destination below.

Neither the official listing nor last year's posts mention wheelchair access. A parent brought a pushchair, used a baby-care room for nappy changes and used toilets in a nearby building. Expect up to a 10-minute walk from the car parks; there were hand-wash taps between stalls and indoor and outdoor seating. If you use a wheelchair, ring the organisers on 063-653-1827 (Korean) before you go.

Year by year

Autumn 2025

The 2025 festival ran 15–16 November at the Fermentation Theme Park only (this year it extends into the Gochujang Folk Village). Visitors that year mentioned chef appearances by Raymon Kim and Ahn Yu-seong, a DJ stage, a pink muhly grass field, a free soft-serve giveaway, survey events with prizes and a taekwondo show. Tteokbokki cost ₩2,000–3,000 a plate, served in reusable bowls, so no takeaway.

Tips from people who went

  • Arrive around opening (10:00), ideally Saturday morning: parking and seats were easier.
  • Bring water and a picnic mat or folding stool; seating ran short and there was no shop on site.
  • Carry some cash in won; not every stall took cards.
  • Bowls are reusable, so no takeaway — bring a lidded tub if you want leftovers.
  • The mobile leaflet was hard to read; paper copies were at the information centre.
  • Sun hat and sunglasses: little shade.
  • Check the website for activities that need advance booking.
