Southernmost Yellowtail Festival

최남단 방어 축제

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

The Southernmost Yellowtail Festival takes over Moseulpo Port, on Jeju's south-west tip, for four days of bangeo — fat winter yellowtail. It runs Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November 2026, 10:00–17:00, with stage shows into the evening. The closing ceremony and fireworks start at 20:00 on Sunday. Entry is free and no ticket is needed. Hands-on activities are signed up for on the spot. Hand-catching and cage fishing cost ₩20,000 each; children's hand-catching and the auction are free to join. Alongside the official listing, we read 23 blog posts by people who went in 2023–2025.

What 23 visitors said

We started from the Korea Tourism Organization listing and the official website, then read 30 blog posts for each of the last three years. Of those, 14 (2023), 7 (2024) and 6 (2025) described an actual visit; we kept 10, 7 and 6 respectively — 23 in all. Everything from blogs is past-year experience; where it conflicts with this year's notices, the notices win.

What people liked

Hand-catching is the highlight8 of 23 posts

Fun to do and fun to watch. Staff helped, and those who caught nothing were often handed a fish. 23-20 23-22 24-27 24-30 25-23 25-26 25-29 25-30

Fresh, good-value sashimi7 of 23 posts

Freshly cut yellowtail, generous portions, no rip-offs — though a few found prices high in later years. 23-20 23-23 23-25 23-26 23-29 25-26 25-29

Generous free tastings10 of 23 posts

Free yellowtail and pork tastings were generous; later rounds sometimes ended early. 23-24 23-29 23-30 24-23 24-24 24-25 24-27 24-30 25-26 25-27

What people struggled with

Cold sea wind12 of 23 posts

Late November on an open quay: the most common complaint is cold and wind. People advise hats and gloves. 23-22 23-23 23-24 23-26 23-28 23-30 24-23 24-24 24-25 25-23 25-28 25-30

Parking is hard9 of 23 posts

At weekends car parks, including the temporary one, filled up; people circled or parked far along the coast road. Weekdays were easier. 23-22 23-25 23-26 23-28 24-25 24-28 25-23 25-26 25-30

You will get wet7 of 23 posts

Even with waterproofs, clothes got soaked; bring a change. Changing tents were basic. 23-20 23-22 23-24 23-26 24-24 24-30 25-30

Activity slots fill early6 of 23 posts

Slots are capped per hour; children's catching and fishing were full by lunch or early afternoon. Go in the morning. 23-28 24-25 24-28 24-30 25-26 25-29

Long queues for sashimi6 of 23 posts

Sashimi queues ran 20 minutes or more; some gave up, and late in the day it sold out. 23-22 23-23 23-25 23-30 24-29 25-29

Same each year, fewer fish3 of 23 posts

Some repeat visitors found little change year to year and fewer or smaller fish in the pool. 24-25 24-30 25-28

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

Who goes, and when

3 of 23 posts were by families with children. The rest were solo visitors, couples, small groups and a daughter with her mother; several were travellers staying nearby. Most 2024–25 posts don't say who paid.

Visiting from abroad

Entry needs no booking. Activities are signed up for on the spot in 2026 too, and children's hand-catching is first come, first served on the day. The official listing and website are Korean-only, and the posts we read say nothing about English signs or staff. 2 of 23 posts mention foreigners at all: Japanese tourists ordering yellowtail, and an Indian trader's stall. A translation app will help at the sign-up desks and food stalls.

Weather and crowds

It's an outdoor festival on a quay in late November. 10 of 23 posts said it was cold or very windy, and in 2024 the first two days brought wind and rain. Saturday is the busiest day: full car parks, long sashimi queues and activity slots gone by lunch. Windy weekdays were noticeably quieter, so Thursday or Friday morning is the calmest time. Check the forecast nearer the date.

Getting there and access

No shuttle has been announced for 2026. How people got there in past years:

  • Taxi: the simplest option for visitors. Show the driver the Korean text below rather than the street address.
  • Bus: a 2025 visitor took bus 151 or 152 to Hamo Sports Park (하모체육공원) and walked about 300 m, or changed from 182 to 255 for Moseulpo Port. Routes change, so check Naver Map or Kakao Map.
  • Car: port car park, public car parks near Hong Mart, and roadside along the road towards Unjin Port. Parking inside the port was banned in 2023, and at weekends people walked 10–15 minutes from where they found space. Volunteers and soldiers direct traffic.
  • At weekends, come by taxi or bus.
Wheelchair and pushchair access is not mentioned in the official material or in any post we read, so we could not confirm it. The site is an open-air quay; one visitor found it roomy, but lanes between stalls get crowded at weekends. Toilets: portable and public toilets were plentiful in 2023, and in 2025 there were portable toilets right beside the stage. Changing tents for hand-catching were cramped and open-fronted.

Year by year

Autumn 2023

2023 (23rd edition) ran 23–26 November. Adult hand-catching was ₩20,000 (cash only), children free, cage fishing ₩20,000; a 450 g plate of sashimi was ₩15,000 plus ₩5,000 for the table setting. That year had an auction joined by the provincial governor, a TikTok challenge and free extras such as reel fishing with dads and conch catching.

Autumn 2024

2024 (24th) ran 28 November–1 December. Thursday and Friday were wet and windy and quiet; sunny Saturday was packed. A new temporary car park filled quickly. Sashimi was ₩20,000–30,000 a plate; filleting your catch cost ₩3,000–7,000 by size, plus ₩7,000 for an ice box. Children couldn't keep fish from their pool, and one visitor noted fewer fish after some died overnight.

Autumn 2025

2025 (25th) ran 20–23 November. Posts disagree on the adult hand-catching fee (₩10,000 or ₩20,000), and one said the website and the desk differed; the 130 cm height rule for free children's entry was also reported inconsistently. Sashimi was mostly ₩20,000 a plate, and fairground rides (₩7,000–10,000) appeared. One visitor missed the free tasting; another enjoyed it.

Tips from people who went

  • Bring a full change of clothes and a towel if you plan to catch fish by hand — waterproofs are provided but people still got soaked.
  • Slots are capped per hour and went by lunchtime at weekends: go in the morning if you want to take part.
  • In 2023 the hand-catching fee was cash only, so carry some cash.
  • The sea wind is bitter; pack a hat, scarf and gloves.
  • Don't miss the free tastings — later rounds sometimes ran out.
  • Staff will fillet your catch for a fee and pack it on ice to take back to your room.
  • If the sashimi queue is huge, visitors bought from Hong Mart Moseulpo or nearby restaurants instead.
  • A volunteer tent served free tea in 2025.
  • The closing ceremony and fireworks are on Sunday 22 November, 20:00–20:30. Activities end at 14:30 that day.
