Nowon Moonlight Walk

노원달빛산책

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

Nowon Moonlight Walk is a night-time public-art festival along Danghyeoncheon, a stream in Nowon-gu, north-east Seoul, lined with lanterns and light sculptures. This year's edition, 'New Moon', runs from 16 October to 8 November 2026 around Danghyeon Maru. The lights come on daily at 17:30 and the site is open 17:30–22:00 every day; the official listing says it is free, and you simply walk the riverside path. We read three years of visitor blogs to tell you when it is busy, how to get there and what to expect.

What 30 visitors said

We started from the Korea Tourism Organization listing and the official website, then read blog posts from 2023 to 2025. In 2023 we read 29 posts, 18 of them actual visits, and picked 10; in 2024, 30 read, 20 visits, 10 picked; in 2025, 30 read, 15 visits, 10 picked. We favoured self-funded visits. Where past posts conflict with this year's notices, this year's notices win.

Visiting from abroad

The exhibition needs no booking — just walk in. The official website has an English version and lists the artworks with English titles. We could not confirm English on-site labels, an English audio guide or an English-language tour.

The resident-guide 'Moonlight Tour' runs daily at 19:30 until 8 November. It starts at Junggye Station exit 6, by Danghyeon 1 Bridge. Places are limited, so sign up on the official 'Moonlight Tour' page. The tour language is not stated, so assume Korean. None of the posts we picked mention foreign visitors.

Weather and crowds

Past visitors found the evenings chilly — 7 of 30 posts say so. Opening day and weekends drew big crowds, while weekday evenings and sudden cold snaps were quiet. This year's opening weekend has passed; for the calmest visit, go on a weekday just after dark.

Getting there and access

Take the subway. There is no festival car park, and the official site asks visitors to come on foot or by public transport. 5 of 30 past posts also found parking difficult.

The official routes are:

  • Sanggye Station (Line 4): exit 3, then about 5 minutes downstream to the Nowon Math Culture Center, where the exhibition path starts.
  • Junggye Station (Line 7): exit 1 or 6, walk straight to Danghyeon 1 Bridge (당현1교), then take the slope down to the stream.

Buses stop at Junggye Station exit 1 (102, Nowon 15), Children's Traffic Park (102, 1120, Nowon 09) and Sanggye-dong Gas Station (1139, 1140, 1143). By taxi, show the driver the Korean destination below. The official 'Directions' page lists no shuttle (checked 26 October).

The official site gives step-free routes: - Sanggye Station (Line 4): take the lifts to exit 1, 2, 4 or 5, go 150 m towards the Nowon Math Culture Center, cross, then use the ramp. - Junggye Station (Line 7): take the lift to exit 5, cross Danghyeon 1 Bridge, then use the ramp to the left of Homeplus. There is a drop-off point for accessible call taxis on the road by the floor fountain, near Korean Bible University. Toilets with wheelchair stalls are at Buram Mini Park (near the Math Culture Center) and at the Danghyeoncheon entrance by the floor fountain. The festival offers wheelchair loan, mobility assistance, audio description for blind visitors, and writing pads and communication boards. Contact: [email protected] or +82 2-2289-3488/3489. 5 of 30 past posts say the riverside path is flat and wide enough for buggies and wheelchairs, and one mentions several step-free access points. Toilets and benches were spaced along the route.

Year by year

Autumn 2023

2023 ran 13 October – 5 November under the theme 'Alchemy of Light'. Opening night featured a traditional fire-falling show (nakhwa), and a walk-in 'Alchemist's Castle' with queues and a media-art piece drew attention. Some visitors arriving late only saw part of it before lights-out at 22:00.

Autumn 2024

2024 ran 18 October – 17 November under the theme 'Breath'. It grew to 41 works and added a laser show over the stream. Food trucks and a bakery appeared for the first time, though one visitor found the food choice thin.

Autumn 2025

2025 ran 17 October – 16 November under the theme 'Everyone's Moon'. Danghyeon Maru opened with a café and self-service ramyeon corner; a stamp trail and a chalk-graffiti work were popular. A couple of visitors felt it was smaller than before.

Tips from people who went

  • Lights on at 17:30, off at 22:00. To see everything, start walking by 19:00.
  • Take the subway (Junggye, Line 7, or Sanggye, Line 4) — parking is scarce.
  • Bring a warm layer; evenings by the water get cold.
  • Walk the bank opposite the main cluster of works for better views.
  • Weekday evenings are noticeably quieter than weekends.
  • The resident-guide tour leaves daily at 19:30 from Junggye Station exit 6 (Danghyeon 1 Bridge). Places are limited, so sign up on the 'Moonlight Tour' page first.
  • Look at the site map and audio guide on the official website before you go.
  • Last year Danghyeon Maru sold coffee and instant ramyeon — handy for a break.
