Haengju Hanwoo BBQ Festival

행주한우 숯불구이축제

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

A two-day beef festival in Goyang, just north-west of Seoul, run by the local livestock co-op on a car park next to the Goyang fire station. Its brand of hanwoo (Korean beef) is sold at 20–50% off, and in a 1,000-seat grill hall you buy packs by the 100g and cook them yourself over charcoal. The 2026 edition, the third, is Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November: the shop and tastings run 9:00–17:00, the grill hall 11:00–20:00 on Saturday (last entry 19:00) and 11:00–17:00 on Sunday (last entry 16:00). Entry is free and it is a subway ride from Seoul on Line 3. We read Korean blog posts from people who went to the last three editions (the 2023 predecessor, October 2024 and June 2025).

What’s on

From the official timetable and leaflet (checked 21 October 2026). There is no advance booking — the shop and the grill hall hand out queue numbers on site (in 2025 via a kiosk and KakaoTalk). The grill hall's table charge and the event-session times have not been published yet. The organiser warns that items end early when stock runs out.

What 23 visitors said

We searched Naver, the blog platform most Koreans use, for posts written during each festival and the month after (7 for 2023, 30 for 2024, 38 for 2025), read every one to the end and kept only people who actually went, then chose up to ten of the fullest each year: 3 for 2023, 10 for 2024, 10 for 2025. City-hall and co-op blogs, politicians' posts and vendors' posts were dropped, and no writer is counted twice. Every number counts the posts that mentioned something.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

Who goes, and when

Almost everyone is local — Goyang, Ilsan and north-west Seoul — who saw a banner in the neighbourhood and came to stock up on beef. Families with children, and couples coming for an evening of beef and soju. Every year writers mention older residents arriving before opening and clearing the shop. Nobody wrote about travelling far for it.

Visiting from abroad

None of the 23 posts mention foreign visitors or any English signage, and the official site and leaflet are Korean only. The good news: you need almost no Korean. The grill hall works by pointing — packs in the fridge are labelled by cut and grade with a price per 100g, you pay once at the counter (meat plus a table charge of ₩5,000 per adult in 2024 and 2025, ₩3,000 for children, drinks separately), and get a basket with rice, soup, side dishes and tongs; staff bring the charcoal. What you cannot avoid is the queue system: in 2025 both the shop and the grill hall used an on-site kiosk where you enter a Korean mobile number and get a KakaoTalk message when your turn comes. We could not confirm whether a foreign number works — ask the staff at the kiosk, or go at opening on Sunday (11:00, with 59 groups ahead at 10:00 one writer was eating by 10:40). There is no advance booking of any kind. Card payment at the main counters was not questioned by any writer, but one chicken stall in 2023 was cash only and the Seoul Milk stall gave a gift for cash — carry some cash.

Weather and crowds

The 2026 edition falls at the end of October: cool days, chilly after dark, and the grill hall is a tent — bring a jacket for the evening. The October 2024 edition was clear after rain the day before, though writers mention sun slanting into the tent and smoke hanging under it. The June 2025 edition had a morning shower on Saturday, then heat and humidity with no fans or ventilation. In 2023 one writer queued three hours in shadeless sun. No wet-weather policy has been published.

Getting there and access

Subway Line 3 to Wondang station, exit 5, then 920m on foot (10 minutes by the leaflet, 13 by one blogger) — the official directions. From Wondang station buses 11, 95, 850, 707, 771 and 773 stop at Sinwondang Village Complex 7, right by the site. From central Seoul it is roughly half an hour on Line 3 from Jongno 3-ga. The organiser asks people to come by public transport: the public car park opposite fills early and the roads jam, so writers who drove parked at Seongsa public car park (10 minutes' walk) or Goyang city hall. A taxi from anywhere in Goyang or Ilsan is easy — say 'Goyang Sobangseo' (fire station).

The ground is gravel and stone: two writers found it hard going with a pushchair, and nobody wrote about using a wheelchair. Toilets are portable units at the edge of the site; there was a first-aid booth and a seated waiting area. Most people wait out their ticket number in the shade of the stage tent.

Year by year

Autumn 2023

The predecessor 'Goyang Livestock Festival', one day on 28 October at the agricultural centre. No grill hall, just a 30%+20% beef sale: the car park was full by 10:20, the meat queue ran one to three hours, and stock came in small batches that sold out again. One chicken stall took cash only.

Autumn 2024

The first edition under the new name, 19–20 October, at the present site. An 800-seat grill hall and a numbered-ticket shop appeared for the first time. By noon on Saturday ticket numbers were in the 1,400s with the 870s being called; issuing stopped past 1,000 and resumed at 14:00. On Sunday a couple who arrived at 8:46 got number 46 and were shopping at 10:00. Those who ate in the grill hall praised it as clean and delicious; more writers turned away without eating. Table charge ₩5,000, beef ₩7,340–8,400 per 100g.

Autumn 2025

The second edition, 7–8 June, 1,000 seats. A kiosk queue (phone number, KakaoTalk alert) replaced standing in the sun, but demand grew: at 9:30 on Saturday shop tickets were already in the 370–390s, issuing ended at 10:50, and the grill hall had 200-plus groups waiting by afternoon. On Sunday the shop tickets were said to be gone by 9:00, then reopened without notice in the afternoon. Grill-hall prices equalled the shop's, hence the tip: if you only want meat to take home, buy it at the grill-hall counter. The city said 20,000 people came.

Tips from people who went

  • To buy beef, get a shop ticket before opening (around 8:00) — by 9:30 numbers were in the 300s, by 11:00 they were gone
  • To eat in the grill hall, register at its kiosk the moment you arrive; the shop and the grill hall have separate queues
  • Only want meat to take home? Buy it at the grill-hall counter and skip the shop queue (same prices in 2025)
  • Sunday opening (11:00) is the quickest: 59 groups ahead at 10:00, eating by 10:40
  • Saturday after 16:00 many people give up, so one couple got in within about 30 minutes
  • The table charge (₩5,000 per adult, ₩3,000 per child in 2025) includes rice, soup and side dishes; drinks are paid separately
  • A cool bag is provided but only one ice pack — bring a cooler for the trip back to Seoul
  • Sirloin, tenderloin and striploin are limited to 3–5 packs per person, each 200–300g
  • Add the Goyang livestock co-op on KakaoTalk for a free pack of bone broth (first 100 per session)
  • Tastings run to a timetable with a lunch break (12:30–13:30)
  • It is hot and smoky under the tents — wet wipes, a hand fan, and a jacket for a late-October evening
  • Carry some cash; one stall took cash only
