Gwangju Biennale

광주비엔날레

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

The Gwangju Biennale is Korea's leading international contemporary-art biennial: a ticketed main exhibition at the Biennale Hall in Yongbong-dong, plus national pavilions — mostly free — scattered across the city, from the Asia Culture Center to old missionary houses in Yangnim-dong. The 16th edition, *You Must Change Your Life*, directed by Ho Tzu Nyen, runs 5 September – 15 November 2026. Adults ₩20,000; closed Mondays. We read Korean blog posts from people who went to the 2023 and 2024 editions and to this one since it opened.

What 23 visitors said

We searched Naver, the blog platform most Koreans use, for 30 posts each from the 14th (2023) and 15th (2024) editions and from this one since it opened (5 September – 11 October), read every one to the end, kept only people who went (10, 7 and 8), and used 9, 6 and 8 — 23 in all. Sponsored and official-supporter posts were dropped and no writer is counted twice. Every number counts the posts that mentioned something. There was no 2025 edition.

Who goes, and when

Mostly art-lovers with friends or partners, many combining it with a trip to Gwangju by KTX or SRT, plus some families. Only the opening weekend was crowded; weekdays were relaxed. Seven posts found the work hard to follow, and the most common advice is to join a free hourly tour or use the QR audio guide. Allow 1½–3 hours for the main hall.

Visiting from abroad

Posts did not count foreign visitors, but they found an English leaflet (2023), bilingual wall texts and English notes in the pavilions; the foundation reported a rising share of foreign visitors in 2024. This is the most foreigner-ready event on our autumn list: the exhibition guide site and pavilion site are in English. Take the KTX to Gwangju-Songjeong, then the metro; spend one day at the main hall and another on the pavilions at the Asia Culture Center and Yangnim-dong. Check that the English docent or audio guide is running when you go.

Weather and crowds

Early September was hot. The main show is indoors, but touring the pavilions means walking — Yangnim-dong is hilly.

Getting there and access

Parking at the hall is tight. In 2026 the Biennale car park in Maegok-dong is an 8–10-minute walk with a shuttle (30 runs a day); on opening weekend it filled and roads jammed. Several advise public transport or weekdays. From KTX Gwangju-Songjeong station take the metro into town; on Fridays and weekends a free shuttle links the hall with the main pavilions. In Yangnim-dong the public car park is free for two hours.

Wheelchairs and pushchairs were lent at the entrance in 2023; the 2026 guide says to ask staff. There is a nursing room and a cloakroom; no pets, food or long umbrellas. Some rooms are dark, and a few pavilion works are viewed sitting or lying on the floor.

Year by year

Autumn 2023

14th, 7 April – 9 July, *Soft and Weak Like Water*: a touchable trunkless elephant and hands-on works; ₩16,000.

Autumn 2024

15th, 7 September – 1 December, *Pansori, a Soundscape of the 21st Century*: guided tours helped; the Asia Culture Center pavilions were a highlight.

Autumn 2026

Since the 16th opened in September: playable ping-pong tables, an air-tube forest and outdoor bridge performances (11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00) won praise; opening-weekend parking was bad and the AI guide failed for one visitor.

Tips from people who went

  • Closed Mondays; last entry 17:30
  • Time your visit to a free tour, then go round again
  • Two hours or more for the main hall
  • A separate day for the pavilions
  • Local discounts need ID
  • Public transport or shuttle at weekends
  • Some Yangnim pavilions take Naver bookings
