의좋은 형제 축제

Every Korean child knows the folk tale of the two brothers who secretly carried rice sheaves to each other's stacks at night — and this is the village it comes from, Daeheung in Yesan. For one weekend the villagers build a straw maze and a straw slide in the harvested paddies, and families complete team missions — carrying sheaves, playing traditional games — to earn bowls of ramyun and sweet potatoes to roast over a fire. Most activities are free and villagers run the food stalls. The 2026 edition is 7–8 November (Saturday and Sunday) at Uijoeun Hyeongje Park, Daeheung-myeon. It is small, rural and aimed squarely at families. We read Korean blog posts from people who went in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Who goes, and when
Twelve of the 20 posts are families with children — primary-school kids up to a teenager enjoyed the missions, and there are child-sized A-frame carriers and rice-cake mallets. One group of adults without children found it too small, “like a school sports day”. Many combined it with the Yedangho suspension bridge and monorail nearby, or Yesan market.

One writer saw foreign visitors laughing their way through the mock jail-and-paddle punishment at the old county office in 2024, and that year had a multicultural booth and world costume try-on. Nobody mentions English signs. The missions are physical games, so you can join by watching what others do; the mission sheet is in Korean, and staff were friendly to children and outsiders.
Weather and crowds
Days were mostly clear and mild, but after dark it gets cold and very dark — the area outside the stage is unlit, so bring a torch. In 2025 there was light rain one day and strong wind the next. Saturday daytime was busiest; one family found parking easy arriving late in the afternoon.
Getting there and access
A car is easiest. Navigate to 의좋은형제공원 (Uijoeun Hyeongje Park); attendants direct you at the entrance. The Daeheung middle/high school playing field becomes the main car park, and the big lot opposite fills fast. Some parked at the Yedangho Central Ecological Park public car park and walked — the main road has no pavement, so take the village lanes. By public transport, the local bus from Yesan town takes 30–40 minutes and runs infrequently; check the timetable both ways before you go.

Autumn 2023
28–29 October. Clear autumn weather and lots of families; five minutes of fireworks on the Saturday night. Late arrivals missed the straw slide.
Autumn 2024
4–6 October — earlier than usual, so the chrysanthemums had not bloomed, and the Friday opening had little going on. From Saturday the missions and the ramyun station were in full swing.
Autumn 2025
8–9 November, now two days. You had to pass the “Red light, green light” mission first to unlock the rest; new was pulling radishes and having village grandmothers make them into water kimchi (₩10,000). Fireworks were on the Saturday night only.
Tips from people who went
- Go on Saturday — fireworks and shows have been on Saturday night
- Do the straw slide early and booths before 6pm
- One mission sheet per group; check your ramyun ingredients when you collect them
- Roasting sweet potatoes takes 15–20 minutes
- After rain, skip the maze or bring spare shoes
- A torch and warm layers for the evening
