Gangjin Bay Reed Festival
강진만 춤추는 갈대축제
This edition · Data as of · Published ·
Where the Tamjin River meets Gangjin Bay, on Korea’s far south-west coast, a wide tidal reed bed turns gold every autumn, and for nine days the town of Gangjin holds a festival in the ecological park around it. Entry is free. You walk boardwalks through reeds taller than you, watch mudskippers in the flats below, and there is a stage, food stalls and a lot for children. It is a very local, very Korean festival — 2026 is the 11th — and almost nobody writes about it in English. So we read Korean blog posts from people who went in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

What people liked
What people struggled with
These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.
Who goes, and when
Families with young children are the biggest group by far. Most went on a weekend afternoon: the children in the play zone and craft tents, the adults out on the boardwalk. The few who went alone chose a weekday afternoon or sunset and had the reeds almost to themselves. People bringing elderly parents either borrowed a wheelchair or worried about the distances.
Who they went with
Time of day
How the reeds looked
This is the real question with a reed festival. In 2024 and 2025, held in late October into November, most writers who described the reeds found them gold and silver and moving in the wind. In 2023 the festival ran about ten days earlier, in mid-October, and four of the ten said the reeds were still partly green, not yet fluffy, or thinner than they hoped. One or two felt the reed bed had shrunk over the years. Several said the reeds near the entrance are the weakest — go further in, or across the river — and that they look best at sunset. The 2026 dates (24 October to 1 November) are like 2024 and 2025.
Visiting from abroad
None of the Korean posts mention foreign visitors, interpreters or English signs, and the festival has no English website — the Korea Tourism Organization’s English listings do not include it either. Expect everything in Korean. In practice it is an easy festival to do without the language: entry is free and the boardwalk needs no explanation. The hard part is getting there: Gangjin is at the far south-western end of the peninsula with no train station, so it suits a road trip through South Jeolla. Dasan Chodang, Gaudo Island and Muwisa Temple nearby all appear in the Korea Tourism Organization’s English listings.
Weather and crowds
On a clear day the sun is strong and there is no shade on the boardwalk, so bring a hat and water; the festival lends parasols free (one 2024 writer paid a ₩5,000 deposit). It is the coast, so expect wind, and it turns cold quickly after sunset. On the first Sunday of the 2024 festival (27 October) it rained: the bouncy castles, bike hire and parasol loans stopped, and parts of the boardwalk were closed. Weekends are busy and weekdays quiet — one family found it empty at 9 am on a Saturday and the car parks full by lunchtime.
Getting there and access
Almost everyone drove (about an hour and a half from Gwangju, one writer says). Parking is free and attendants direct you. The near car parks (1–3) fill by late morning — one family arriving at 11:30 on a 2024 Saturday was sent to car park 5, and from there or the overflow lots it is a 10–20 minute walk, longer with small children. Gangjin has no railway station. Without a car, take an intercity or express bus to Gangjin Bus Terminal; in 2024 and 2025 a festival shuttle ran from the terminal to the park, though one writer found the last weekend shuttle late and packed. The 2026 shuttle timetable is not out yet. Staff told one visitor a full loop of the reed beds takes about 40 minutes; with the stamp tour, people stayed three or four hours.
Year by year
Autumn 2023
The 8th, 13–22 October — the earliest of the three, and the year most people found the reeds not quite ready. The chrysanthemum displays and cosmos garden got the praise instead. One Saturday clashed with a youth trot-singing contest and was packed; on the opening day some play equipment was not set up until the afternoon.
Autumn 2024
The 9th, 26 October – 3 November. Children could wade in and catch eels by hand (catch three and win a voucher), and some visitors claimed the county’s half-price travel rebate. Food came in reusable dishes you hand back, which several people liked. Rain on Sunday the 27th stopped many activities; the evening stage had well-known pop acts.
Autumn 2025
The 10th, 25 October – 2 November. Collecting all 12 stamps earned a ₩25,000 local voucher, and umbrellas and picnic sets (mat and folding table) were lent free. Most posts praise the number of children’s activities; one notes that most craft booths had closed by 3–4 pm.
Tips from people who went
- On a weekend, arrive early: the near car parks and the empty photos are gone by midday
- Hat, water, a parasol (free to borrow on site) and a layer for after sunset
- Bring a picnic mat — the shelter tents were full or dusty
- Bike hire (₩1,000 for a single) needs ID — a passport will do
- Eat before or after the lunch rush; the local-food hall took over 30 minutes
- Go up to the visitor-centre roof garden and the viewing towers
- Stay for sunset, when the reeds look their best
- For water activities like eel catching, bring spare clothes and a towel
- Watch for ticks in long grass
