Gamaksan Flower and Star Festival

감악산 꽃별여행

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

Every autumn a mountaintop in rural Geochang turns purple. Along a ridge lined with wind turbines, the county plants hundreds of thousands of asters and Korean chrysanthemums, and for about a month from mid-September people drive up to walk through them. You do not hike — you drive to the top — but the road is the catch: a narrow, steep single lane that jams on good days. This is a festival Koreans drive to from Daegu, Gimhae or Jinju; it is not set up for overseas visitors, and nothing we read mentions foreigners or English. We read Korean blog posts from people who went during the last three festivals (2023, 2024 and 2025) so you know what you would be signing up for.

ProgrammeFive hectares of purple asters and four of white Korean chrysanthemums along a wind-farm ridge, a silver-grass maze, three lookouts, and a 3.8 km step-free boardwalk. Small stage shows at sunset, buskers, a stamp tour, a farmers’ market and food stalls. Official hours are 07:00–19:00.

What 30 visitors said

We searched Naver, the blog platform most Koreans use, read every candidate post to the end, and kept only people who went during that year’s official festival dates (4–15 October 2023, 13 September–13 October 2024, 19 September–12 October 2025) — ten per year. Visits before or after the festival, sponsored posts and repeat writers were dropped. Nine of the thirty did not say whether they paid their own way. Every number below counts the posts that mentioned something; a writer who did not mention a thing is not counted as disagreeing.

Who goes, and when

Families with children were the largest group we could place, then couples. They drove in from an hour or two away. Most went early in the morning — some arrived at 5:30 am — partly to beat the parking and the road, partly for the sunrise and the cloud sitting in the valleys below. More went on weekdays than at weekends, and the weekday writers were the ones who found it calm.

How far the flowers were out

This is the real question with a flower festival, and the answer changes a lot from year to year. In 2023, seven of our ten writers found the asters patchy or late; some blamed frost or rain. In 2024 and 2025 most found the asters out, even where the chrysanthemums lagged. The purple asters come first and the white chrysanthemums later: late-September visitors typically saw asters at their peak and chrysanthemums only starting, and by mid-October some found the flowers fading. Several said the lower and inner fields were fuller than the ones by the entrance.

Visiting from abroad

None of the thirty posts mention foreign visitors, English signs or interpretation. This is a county-run flower festival in the countryside, so expect signs, menus and the market in Korean only. A translation app and a car with a Korean-speaking driver will make the day much easier. To be clear, what we know is that nobody mentioned it — not that there is definitely nothing.

Weather and crowds

It is much colder on the ridge than in the valley. Nearly half the writers who mentioned weather said it was cold or windy, especially before sunrise and after dark — one family’s child was cold under a blanket. Midday sun, on the other hand, can be fierce — one writer came home sunburnt. Fog is common: some got a sea of cloud below them at dawn, others got nothing at all from the lookout. Posts were split between “crowded” and “fine”; the calm ones were mostly weekday mornings.

Getting there and access

You need a car. Only one writer addressed public transport, suggesting a bus to Geochang Intercity Bus Terminal and a taxi from there. The road to the top is a steep single lane with hairpin bends; writers repeatedly warned nervous drivers, and on busy days the queue at the bottom took 40 minutes to an hour. If the top car park is full you are sent to the lower car parks and a shuttle bus (₩3,000); from car park 2 it is a five-minute walk. From the car park to the flowers is 5–15 minutes on dirt paths, partly covered with coir matting, muddy after rain. There are portable toilets by the car parks and along the road.

There is a 3.8 km step-free boardwalk around the site, Three writers mention it: one who walked it said it is level enough for wheelchair users, and two pass on the official description that it is. But three others said the paths through the flower fields themselves — dirt and gravel — were hard going for a pushchair or wheelchair, and one noted there was no pushchair hire and no accessible facilities. Read together: the boardwalk works, the fields are harder.

Year by year

Autumn 2023

A weak year for the flowers: seven of ten found them patchy. People made up for it with the silver-grass maze, the lookout and the night projection show, and praised the traffic control.

Autumn 2024

The asters came back strong, and two writers noticed the road had been widened and the car parks reorganised. Weekends still jammed for up to an hour, and one visitor lost 40 minutes to contradictory directions from traffic staff.

Autumn 2025

The best bloom of the three in most accounts. Several people arrived before dawn for the sunrise over the cloud — and warned about the cold and driving up in fog.

Tips from people who went

  • Go early — on a weekend, leave before dawn so you get the top car park
  • Bring a warm layer and something to sit on; it is much colder at the top
  • If you are not a confident driver, be careful: single-lane, steep, tight bends
  • Walk down to the lower and inner fields — they are fuller than the ones by the entrance
  • Avoid the day after rain: the stems lie flat and the paths turn to mud
  • Wear trainers, not sandals — the plastic matting is slippery
  • Stamp-tour prizes are handed out until 5:30 pm
