Busan Folk-art Festival

부산종합민속예술제

This edition · Data as of · Published ·

The Busan Folk-art Festival presents the city's intangible heritage — folk music, dance, crafts and traditional games — in Busan Citizens Park. This year's edition was postponed from 24–25 October; the organisers' notice of 23 October moved it to Sunday 15 November only, 11:00–17:00, on the park's Hialeah Lawn. Admission is free according to the official listing. Some official text still shows the old dates and venue; go by the latest notice. We read 33 blog posts from 2023–2025 and picked 6 written by people who went in 2025.

What 6 visitors said

We searched blogs by festival name, year by year. The 2 posts from 2023 and 1 from 2024 were not first-hand visits. Of 30 posts from 2025, 9 described an actual visit and we picked the 6 most detailed. All describe last year; where they differ from this year's notices, the notices win.

What people liked

Good for families with children5 of 6 posts

Last year's visitors said children stayed engaged with the shows, mask-making and games. Plenty for parents and kids to do together. 25-18 25-20 25-22 25-24 25-29

Traditional games with no booking3 of 6 posts

Games such as mock flogging, stocks, hoops and arrow-throwing were open to anyone in the queue. The staged 'punishment' role-play was a hit with children. 25-18 25-20 25-22

Strong heritage performances5 of 6 posts

Heritage performances — fishing songs, ironworking songs, tightrope walking — were the highlight. Guest troupes from other regions and the community stage also went down well. 25-18 25-20 25-22 25-24 25-29

Hanbok week stalls and market4 of 6 posts

Many browsed the hanbok and craft market run with Hanbok Culture Week. Last year visitors in hanbok got a free Polaroid; not yet announced for this year. 25-18 25-20 25-21 25-29

What people struggled with

Busy, with long queues4 of 6 posts

Families packed the activity stalls and popular shows, and there was a queue to get into the car park. 25-20 25-21 25-24 25-29

Craft sessions fill up fast3 of 6 posts

Master-artisan workshops have limited places: online slots went ten days early, and on-site places meant queuing an hour ahead. 25-18 25-21 25-29

Things wind down by late afternoon3 of 6 posts

Late arrivals found hanbok hire closed, and stalls began packing up after 4pm. Visitors advise coming in the morning. 25-18 25-24 25-29

Smaller than expected3 of 6 posts

Some found it modest, with short performances, and one noted no food trucks. 25-21 25-22 25-29

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

Who goes, and when

Four of the six picked posts were by families with children, who spent the day on shows, games and face-painting.

Visiting from abroad

None of the six picked posts mentions foreign visitors or English help. The organisers' volunteer call for the original dates included English-speaking guides; whether they will be on duty on 15 November is not confirmed. The website has English menu labels, but content and the Program Reservation page are in Korean. Most performances and games need no language; the line-up includes a Filipino traditional dance troupe.

Weather and crowds

Four of the six posts from last year (late October) called it busy. Activity queues were long and one driver waited over 20 minutes to get into the car park, though another found spaces at Sunday lunchtime. Weather was pleasant for walking, if hot in the midday sun. This year falls about three weeks later, so expect cooler air and check the forecast. We could not confirm a quieter time of day; for workshops, visitors advise arriving in the morning.

Getting there and access

The venue is Busan Citizens Park, Hialeah Lawn (하야리아잔디광장) — not last year's Dasom Plaza. Public transport and shuttle details are not yet confirmed; see 'How to get here' on the official website. Taxi is simplest: show the driver the Korean name below. Last year's visitors mostly drove and used the park car park; one queued over 20 minutes, another found spaces at Sunday lunchtime. Bicycles and motorbikes are banned inside the park. Last year's plaza was tucked away and hard to find.

No official information on wheelchair, pushchair or toilet access. Last year one visitor found Dasom Plaza on a slope, awkward for resting, with plastic chairs set out at the front of the lawn. This year's Hialeah Lawn may differ; ring the organisers on 051-714-1508 to check.

Year by year

Autumn 2025

In 2025 the festival ran 25–26 October (Sat–Sun) at Dasom Plaza. Visitors remembered fishing and ironworking songs, Dongnae fan dance, tightrope walking, a closing set by singer Kim Su-chan, photos with the Boogi mascot and free Polaroids for anyone in hanbok. Workshops took advance sign-ups for the first session only; later sessions were booked at the info desk.

Tips from people who went

  • Book master-artisan workshops in advance on the official website; last year they filled ten days early.
  • Arrive in the morning: last year hanbok hire had closed by late afternoon and stalls packed up after 4pm.
  • Bring snacks and water; one visitor found no food trucks.
  • A picnic mat or folding chair helps for the outdoor shows.
  • Last year visitors in hanbok got a free Polaroid; not yet confirmed for this year.
  • Missed a workshop? The Busan Traditional Arts Centre in Suyeong-gu runs similar sessions.
