Seoul Sikdang

서울식당 A one-dish house by the Goesan bus terminal serving olgaengi haejang-guk, freshwater snails in doenjang broth

Data as of · Published ·

Seoul Sikdang faces the Goesan intercity bus terminal across the road, with the old market alongside, and it sells olgaengi haejang-guk — the Chungcheong name for a soup of freshwater snails in doenjang broth. It is the only thing on the menu; you walk in and say how many of you there are. The place opened in 1982 and carries the government's hundred-year-shop plaque and a Blue Ribbon sticker. It opens around six in the morning, and market people and bus travellers come in for breakfast. The posts we read run from 18 November 2024 to 20 September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.

These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours

What sets it apart

  1. There is nothing to choose. One soup, ordered by the number of people at the table — three writers note that you say the number on the way in and that is the order. Older posts remember kimchi stew and cheonggukjang on the menu, and a large size; neither survives. Because there is only the one dish, it is ladled from a pot already simmering rather than cooked to order, and several writers describe the whole table being laid inside five minutes.
  2. Writers split on the river taste. The snails go in under a coat of flour and egg, and several say that is why there is no bitterness and no muddiness at all — one post puts "not a trace of earth" in its title. Others, eating the same bowl, write that a faint earthy smell stays in the mouth afterwards, or that it arrives at the end of the spoonful. The people who say it is gone and the people who say it is there ate the same soup. If you are sensitive to freshwater fish, assume you are on the second side.
  3. You fetch your own refills. Five side dishes come with the bowl and there is a self-serve corner for more, several posts note. What arrives changes by the day: one table got three kimchis at once, another spinach, garlic scapes, pickled melon, chilli pickle and a mountain green most people meet for the first time here. Two writers warn that the chilli side is hot enough to sting. The minced chilli and the pepper come only if you ask — one writer found no sign saying so and worked it out after the bowl was empty.

These are raw counts, not percentages. Someone who did not mention something is not someone who disagreed.

The most ordered dish is olgaengi haejang-guk (올갱이해장국) — 26 of 25 posts.

Parking

7 posts say you can park; 12 say you cannot. We leave the disagreement standing rather than picking a side.

Posts saying you can park7 of 25 posts
Posts saying you cannot12 of 25 posts

The flattest contradiction in these posts is about parking, and both sides are describing the same kerb. There is room in front of the shop — one writer counts about ten cars. It is not a dedicated lot and it fills. So some write "parking in front" and others write "no car park", and the ones who tried the front, found it full and walked back from an alley explain the split. A few name the Dongbu public car parks nearby; one writer hit a market weekend and found the whole street busy, and others warn about the lunch hour.

Getting inside

Second flooryes 0 · no 1 (of 25 posts read)

One post, and only one, says which floor. It puts "1F" at the end of the address. The other twenty-five say nothing about floors at all — no mention of stairs, and no description of the building beyond it sitting on the main road.

Not one post mentions a step, a ramp or a wheelchair. Whether there is a lip at the door, how wide it is, whether a pushchair goes through — none of the twenty-six say. That is not "there is none"; it is nobody looked. What they do say, five of them, is that the tables are packed close and the room is small. We have counted the narrow gaps; what those gaps mean for a wheelchair nobody wrote down.

Nobody writes about the toilet. Whether it is inside or out the back, whether there are separate ones — not a line in twenty-six posts. For an old market-side place that opens at six in the morning it is a fair question, and it goes unanswered.

No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Toilet inside · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot

Of the 28 posts we gathered, 3 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know

  • Plenty of writers place it across from the bus terminal; not one of them arrived by bus. Seven note the intercity terminal on the other side of the road, but every one of them drove and was describing what they saw out of the windscreen. No post names a route, a stop or a walking time. Whether you can get here without a car is not something we can tell you. Nobody writes about walking here either.
  • The queue reports disagree, and the clock explains why. The ones who waited went at mealtimes; the ones who walked straight in went at eight in the morning or a little after the lunch rush. One found the room nearly full and got the one table that came free; another notes chairs set out front for waiting. Several say the turnover is quick so the wait is short; exactly one puts a number of minutes on it.
  • The hours look as though they have changed recently — but we cannot be sure. Every post from November 2024 to April 2026 gives 06:30–19:00. Both September 2026 posts give 06:00–18:00, and an August 2026 one gives "daily 06:00, last order 17:45". The newer the post, the earlier the day starts and ends. Against that, another post from that same August day still says 06:30–19:00. The old hours win on count, but the posts carrying them are the old posts. If you are going early or late, ring first. Three posts say there is no weekly closing day.
  • Twenty-six, not thirty. Of the thirty posts we gathered, one turned out to be a different restaurant with the same name — a Seoul Sikdang in the Cheongcheon market, a different phone number, selling a dressed-snail dish this kitchen does not make, in a machine-written listicle that marks its Google rating "(estimated)". We threw it out. Three more really are about this place but record no meal: a suspension-bridge write-up that ends by suggesting readers eat here, a chilli-festival guide with one recommendation line, and a television round-up that copies the address and the price. That leaves twenty-six. Not one post declares a sponsorship, and five say they paid their own way. The other twenty-one say nothing either way, which is not the same as saying there was nothing.
  • The price went up. Posts from November 2024 to June 2025 say ₩10,000; posts from August 2025 on say ₩12,000, and a January 2026 writer records the rise itself — two thousand won, recently. The ₩10,000 end of the range at the top of this page comes from those older posts; it is not a price you can pay today. There is nothing to choose between, either — one dish, one price, and today that price is ₩12,000. Opinion on ₩12,000 divides too: one camp points out that most one-dish places in a country town charge ten, another counts five side dishes and a bowl of rice and calls it cheap, and one writer changed his mind between the first spoonful and the last. One post notes that the local Goesan gift vouchers are accepted.
  • Writers disagree about how much arrives. Some describe the bowl as generously loaded; one advises anyone with a big appetite to add a bowl of rice; another says it was small enough that he was hungry again a few hours later and ate a cutlet. Two say the snails themselves looked thinner on the ground than they expected. The bowl is described as heaped and as meagre by different people. Rice is included in the price.
