오펜 커피 Open Keopi A small owner-run cafe by the Chungbuk National University gate, known for kaymak, cakes and a filter coffee that changes bean every month
Data as of · Published ·
OFFEN is a small owner-run café on the main road between the front and middle gates of Chungbuk National University. The sign and the Instagram use the Latin name; the registered one is 오펜 커피. One man makes the coffee, including a filter coffee whose bean changes every month, and on the sweet side the place is known for kaymak and its cakes. Plants, no two tables alike, a chalkboard menu in the owner's hand — nearly every post reaches first for the word atmosphere. Beer and whisky appear at night. It opens at noon and closes on Wednesdays. The posts we read run from 1 October 2024 to 14 September 2026.

The values differ, but the periods they were written in do not overlap. This looks like a change over time rather than a disagreement, and the top row is the most recently reported. We did not confirm it with the restaurant.
These hours are counted from the posts we read. Shops change them without notice — check Naver Place before you go. Place — check hours
What sets it apart
- Write a review and you get a pastry — a financier or an egg tart, your choice. Seven posts mention the offer and five ate what they were given; one got hers for showing a receipt instead. It is worth saying plainly, because some of the praise for the pastries here is praise for something nobody paid for — one post puts the recommendation and the giveaway in the same sentence. No post declares a sponsorship, but being handed a tart for a review is not the same as buying one. There is a stamp card as well, and the shop keeps the cards for you, so there is nothing to carry.
- There is exactly one table outside. Five posts mention the terrace, and one of them adds the catch: a single spot, so you take it or you don't. It sits right beside the road; in summer a parasol goes up. On a cold day nobody sat there, one writer reports — though a cat kept circling it and eventually fell asleep. Indoors the size is disputed: a small ground-floor room, compact, not big, say some; more tables than expected, plenty of seats including ones for sitting alone, say others. There are twos, fours and a sofa, and no two tables or chairs match.
- Whether you can study here is not settled. Good for it, say some — quiet enough for tea and a book, and far enough from the campus strip to stay calm. Not really, say others: there is a comfortable amount of noise, good for a first date; and the music is too good to work through. The music comes up again and again — one writer names the indie bands on the speakers, and the same records leave one person able to sit for hours and another unable to read a page. One found the room empty in the afternoon and full by evening; another reckons you have to arrive at opening to get the seat you want.

Parking

Bring a car and parking is a real problem — one writer was fined. There is no car park. The kerb on the university side is tolerated, but only at certain hours: half eleven to two on weekdays by one account; at lunchtime and then freely after eight in the evening by another. One writer parked a little further up, got a ticket and paid close to forty thousand won, and now tells readers to use the back lane unless they can be gone by two. The opposite side, posts say, is patrolled all day. Several name the Sachang-dong community centre car park and the alley behind as the alternatives; one adds that the kerb is always full anyway.

Getting there

Getting inside
| Second floor | yes 0 · no 4 (of 22 posts read) |
|---|---|
| Toilet inside | 3 of 22 posts |
Four posts say ground floor; the other twenty-one say nothing about floors at all. No one mentions stairs, a basement or an upstairs. The registered address gives part of the ground floor, and one writer notes the full-height window onto the main road, so you can see in from the pavement.
Not one post mentions a step, a ramp or a wheelchair. Whether there is a lip at the door, how wide it is, whether a pushchair fits — none of the twenty-five say. That is not "there is none"; it is nobody looked. What they give instead is that the room is small and on the ground floor, and nothing at all about the gaps between tables. Two posts say pets are welcome, but both are copying the facilities list off the shop's map entry, and no writer describes seeing a dog or a cat inside.
You can reach the toilet from inside, and that is the whole of what we know. Three posts touch on it: one says there is an indoor toilet straight through a connecting door, one simply notes that there is one, and one places the stamp-card box by the toilet door. Nobody says from their own eyes whether it is shared or separate — one post has "no separate men's and women's" in its header list, but that list is lifted wholesale from the map entry (wi-fi, booking and groups sit on the same line), so we have not counted it. Nothing about its size or state either.
No one mentioned: In a basement · Lift to the floor · Ramp at the door · Step at the entrance · Step-free access · Accessible toilet · Separate restrooms. That is not the same as there being none — it means we could not confirm it. Worth calling ahead, and do tell us: we will put it here.

Posts that followed a TV spot
Of the 27 posts we gathered, 5 went up on a single day right after a TV spot and show no sign of a visit. They retell the broadcast, so we left them out of the counts.

We do not discard them. That a TV spot produced a burst of posts is itself something worth knowing about a place, and a star rating will not show it.

What we do not know
- The opening hours are the least trustworthy thing we can tell you about this place. They have moved repeatedly over two years and the posts still disagree. Spring 2025 has it closing at nine; August and September 2025 have it opening at ten in the morning, with different weekend hours; from November 2025 through the summer of 2026 it is noon to ten. Then a post from 5 September 2026 says noon to nine, last order 20:30, and one from nine days later says noon to ten. A March 2026 post says eleven at night, which its own last order of 21:30 contradicts. The shop itself tells people to check Instagram — two posts pass on that instruction, one noting the closures are irregular. And one writer walked to a locked door the day the owner had a cold. Twelve posts give Wednesday as the closing day; exactly one says the opposite, that it opens every day.
- Not one of the twenty-five writers came by bus. None names a stop, a route or a journey time. What they give instead are walking directions from the campus: between the front gate and the middle gate; down the steps by the international office, across one crossing and straight on towards the front gate; five minutes from the pork-cutlet place. There is plenty about walking and nothing about public transport, so whether you can get here on a bus is not something we can answer.
- Only four posts write down a price. Twenty-one of the twenty-five say what they ate and not what it cost. The four span August and September 2025 and April and May 2026, and nothing moved between them — the chestnut basque is ₩7,000 both times, the Matilda cake ₩8,000 both times, the kaymak ₩9,000 both times. Four is still four. Nobody calls the place expensive; three call it fair for a university street or good value for the size of the portion. One looked at the cake prices, thought them steep, and changed her mind when the slice arrived.
- Twenty-five, not thirty. Five posts came out. Two are round-ups of a dozen or more places near the campus, where OFFEN gets its opening hours and a recommended drink and nothing else. One is a machine-assembled page that copies the shop's own map blurb, its facilities list and its review-keyword tallies ("good coffee: rated by 349 reviewers"), with the opening-hours field left reading "no information". One is a diary that checks in and never says a word about the place. And one is a writer who walked up to a closed door the day the owner had a cold. Not a single post declares a sponsorship. Six say they paid their own way, one says a friend paid, and the remaining eighteen say nothing either way — which is not the same as saying there was nothing. The shop does run its own review-for-a-pastry offer, and that is set out above.
- The menu moves, so what you read here may not be there. Two writers note that the owner keeps changing things — the drinks, and the room itself. The filter coffee's bean changes monthly; the strawberry cake is winter only and the melon ade summer only. One long-standing customer remembers when the financiers were baked long and thin and sold with the einspänner, and early 2026 brought a Dubai-chocolate version of the Matilda cake. What sells, sells out — one writer found the cake shelf bare until the owner said there were more in the back, another hurried in for the last of the winter strawberry cakes, and a third arrived at opening to find the baking not yet out.
- Not one post describes queueing. In twenty-five accounts nobody waits, and nobody mentions a line. What they describe instead is getting a seat: customers coming in steadily, so you would have to arrive at opening to choose where you sit; the room filling in a moment; a fair few people already there. One found the place empty in the afternoon and busy by evening; another, on a weekday afternoon, had it quiet to herself. The single outdoor table is the one seat you do have to claim first. So we can tell you nothing about waiting, only about whether there is somewhere to sit.
